Abercrombie flies back to NZ for surgery after Blitz injury

NZ Breakers Captain Tom Abercrombie has returned to NZ for emergency surgery to repair a torn retina in his left eye after catching an accidental blow from Aron Baynes in NZ's first outing of the pre-season Blitz.

Unlucky for Tom after being sidelined for most of last season due to injury.
Hopefully he can bounce back without any long term issues.

Unfortunately for Abercrombie in recent years he just keeps finding different ways to get injured, not the first time he's gotten injured in the first minute of a game either.

To be fair Baynes is a big strong unit especially by NBL standards and it was a complete accident. Pretty unlucky.
It's not like he puts himself in a position to get injured due to poor fitness and conditioning.

I wasn't implying that at all.

It's an inadvertent finger in the eye, doubt the size of Baynes has anything to do with it really

Baynes fingers are probably the size of Abercrombies arms lol.

At least his eye stayed in the socket, that was horrific and still gives me goosebumps

Potentially a serious injury, hopefully no long term impacts.

He's become one of these players who is experiencing a lot of bad luck. It might be time to hang up the boot soon, which would be premature given that he still a relatively elite athlete and a very good spot up shooter, but he’s just not having a good run of things unfortunately. He really needs gametime consistently to get back to his best and perhaps sometime in the NZ NBL would also been in order.

Also why didn't WMW play? I feel like the breakers are a completely different unit with him.

Barlow went through a two year injury period and got back being a very good player in two championships.
It happens, hopefully he can back to his best, still a very good player who the breakers need.

NZ Import Barry Brown Jnr also suffered a foot injury in the same game and the NZ Breakers have moved quickly to sign the older brother of Import Jarrell Brantley, Jamaal Brantley as their nominated injury replacement.

Jamaal could make his debut tonight against the Hawks as Barry Brown Jnr's inclusion is a game time decision.

At this point Abercrombie is recovering at home from surgery and he's expected to be out 6 weeks
