How are the teams/states (including what's happening in other states) that actually have had games etc looking?

U18s probably more relevant to discussion given states will need to be selecting teams soon. The vic metro v country games would be crackers! Some of those players would have missed two years worth of ball - best they wouldn’t hold back.

Also, what’s people’s thoughts on an u20 development tournament given 20s is now after 18s - useful or would the bulk be in various NBL squads etc?

Reply #881790 | Report this post

Given how depleted 20s has been over sometime and the rise of youth ball.

I'd like to see Aus follow nz with u13-u15-u17-u19 instead of the u14-u16-u18-u20.
The former just lines up better with fiba tournaments, gets the best in earlier and the older out quicker into senior basketball.

This year we have

Club
U14 09/10 athletes

AJC
U16 07/08 athletes
U18 05/06 athletes
U20 03/04 athletes - about 40% players have moved on already to nbl1, wnbl, college etc

According to the FIBA Website U17 FIBA WC is in July this year, whilst the u19 WC is June 2023.

07/08 athletes probably have this year and next to make their case for u19 WC - would this include 06's as well?

Nothing on Oceania juniors wise, though the Pacific games are scheduled for November 2023 - is this a junior or senior tournament?

Never understood if FIBA was 19 and under or u19 (I.e. can’t be 19 that year) - can anyone help?

Correct. Since Governments putbig business over the people they were forced to change close contact rules or half the population would be in quaratine right now.

So while the event is clearly a hotspot/close contact issue, current rules mean everything's fine.

Until the majority of players, referees and volunteers end up positive because of a couple of positive cases, at an event which has zero purpose or benefit.

Yes, it no doubt has impacted quality as well as the ability to select as there are not as many data points.

The quality was not what it should have been but selection had as much to do with it as lockdowns, there were plenty of kids there that were not at the required level and plenty sitting at home who were! It was a disappointing event.

There were a lot of players sitting at home that are of much better ability than some of those playing, BUT BasketballSA has put a lot of the players off. The list of players who chose not to bother with the High performance group would be extensive.

Seems insane that Eltham/Dandenong tourney is still scheduled to go ahead next week....seems like an assured spreading event that will jeopardise return to school and return to VJBL comp the following week for the kids who participate.

Some Associations and teams have now withdrawn off their own bat, should be called off.

God help the schoolteachers and parents when school goes back. Expect a massive spike in cases days later, while also assuming that many cases will go unreported.

Time to start panic-buying again???

So if we cancel all events, do we just go into lockdown again like the last 2 years... People in Victoria are not going to cope that.

Life is almost back to normal in Victoria, other than masks inside.

So we had approx 18,000 case today in Victoria from a population of 6,680,000... so 0.26% of the population.

It's not a question of locking down....the question for me is why would you run a tournament knowing that it will impact the real competition which starts a week later?

It exacerbates the existing risk that we will very significant numbers of forfeits when VJBL resumes the following Friday. I’m suggesting you prioritise VJBL.

"Life is almost back to normal in Victoria, other than masks inside."

Other than the Hospitals being full, ICU full, nurses/medical professionals being over run by people who don't even believe in modern medicine. Small businesses closing by the hundreds. And hundreds dying each week needlessly.

Apart from that.

No way they should cancel the tournament. Yes, it's a big tournament, but not as if individuals are going to multiple places. Less risk than most things; less risk than schools. Life needs to go on, and these kids have missed too much for these events to be cancelled.

Totally agree. Kids should be able to play, kids have missed so much due to covid. Basketball Queensland ran their state champs and yes people got covid, played at own risk. How do you know all cases were spread at the competition. People had to know if you were playing and attending it increased risk. Life must go on now and learn to live with it.
