Basketball Vaccination Requirements dropped in Victoria

Double Vaccination requirements have been dropped for Basketball:

"We have recently received information from SRV that the Department of Health has confirmed that it is intended that community sport, both indoor and outdoor, is excluded from vaccination requirements if participants are attending solely for that activity."

Good result...as it means those kids that had to drop out aren't being punished and can re-enter the sport.

Every other sport is doing the same and dropping the double vax requirement.

Someone in my extended family who is a pretty decent baller can't get the vax because her mother is a conspiracy theorist and anti vaxxer so for her and others in the same boat this is good news.

Excuse my ignorance but when can kids and adults get back to playing basketball indoors in Victoria?

Is there a date set?

I have already been contacted by 2 schools we train out of this morning.
Both will require 16+ to be fully vaccinated to use their facilities.
This is going to be a nightmare.

All school venues and the third-party public venues that have the mandates (nearly all of them) require vaccination.

So you don't need to be vaccinated, but really, you do to participate fully if 16+.

Ultimately, it will all come down to each venue's own set of rules.

Some venues in my area (schools mostly) flat out refuse third party users (clubs, private training groups etc) until at least Feb 22.

Others have expressed that only fully vaccinated players / adults can use their facility.

I wonder what stance larger venues such as Dandenong Stadium, Eagles or Msac will adopt.

"While in practical terms, participants, parents/guardians and volunteers - vaccinated and unvaccinated – will be able to attend Basketball Victoria sanctioned activities without having to confirm their vaccination status, there will be other COVID-19 protocols which will be required to be adhered to."
Good form BV and good luck to any venues trying to mandate vax requirements during VJBL games.

It's just a gutless cop out transferring the responsibility to someone else. Typical of the rudderless ship that is basketball victoria.

Our venue requires everyone who is eligible to be vaccinated to have done so. We have been told we will be asked to see vaccination certificates prior to entry. So what happens then?

This seems to be consistent with what's going on generally.

You can participate in a service (eg sport) but can’t attend a public venue without being double vaccinated, unless for essential services.

Consistent with shopping centres really. You can go in for supermarkets and essential stuff, but can’t enter stores that aren’t "essential services" unless double vaccinated. Similarly, you can’t enter a recreational venue indoors.

So BV trying to look like the good guy whilst the associations and venues have to say no you can't come in.

Had really hoped this would be clearer to help the clubs/associations get kids back out there.

Registrations at clubs have been very low. Particularly the U10 to U14 age groups. This is a good move by Basketball Victoria to give us a heads up.

They now need to work with the various departments to ensure access to courts is not hindered.

MS - has registration been low?? We have had no problems at all filling teams, players are ready to go. I have a wait list for every single age group.
We have only had one family threaten to pull out due to vaccination mandates.

If venues require vax for 16+, what happens to all the 15yo kids selected in VJBL teams who aren't vaxed and status would be unknown, that then turn 16 in the coming months?

That's why there are no vaccination requirements. BV have it on their press release. No vaccine mandates. Let’s get the season started yihaaa

That's great news. Means leagues won’t suffer losing teams and players.

I couldn’t even be bothered asking my friends if they had the jab or not? Not my business.

At our club we have grown from Winter to Summer domestic, we currently have 115 teams and running out of room, can we use some courts at Hawthorn if you're not using them???

If BV does not require participants to be double vaxed, then it risks the sport being shut down if/when there is a surge in cases running through the basketball community. Just mandate the vax and be done with it. By early to mid next year we will be at 95% plus and then maybe it can be unmandated.

Agree completely, and the irony is attending events require patrons to be fully vaccinated , so players don't have to be vaccinated under BV rules but have to be under venue rules, going to make it very messy

Plus each competition/tournament will have its own rulings, just like school events
