NBL1 Central week 1 finals

Week 1 of finals and two highly interesting games in what should be an ultra competitive finals series.

Elimination final
North vs Southern

These teams played each other just last week with North winning in a low scoring game. They had more on the line in that one with southern having secured a finals bid the night before. The Rockets pose more questions than answers at this point with McVeigh in Tasmania and Dech still sidelined. My mail is neither are likely to play this weekend and that will see the Rockets season fizzle out sooner than they hoped and leave everyone wondering if it was worth it to bring players in and out all season only to bow out early.

Southern by 7.

Qualifying final
Forestville vs Norwood

Norwood had a slip up to finish the regular season against West but had been the form side before that. Forestville have cruised to second place and while they aren't particularly deep, unearthing Malith Machar recently sure helps their cause. Their big front court is capable of slowing down Turnage and Green and Harris plus Rios shoot well enough to force Norwood to man up.

Forestville by 6.

Interested in everyone else’s thoughts on the games, should be a ripper finals with some good sides. Maybe Woj could lend his thoughts?

Norwood over Eagles 88-78 - Is Brine 100%? Norwood have the size to take down the Eagles, but if Harris and Rios are shooting well I will eat my words happily.

North over Southern 92-75 - I think Southern will get found out matchup wise. Dowdell > Koop, Mcveigh > Coleman and Williams > Wurm. For Southern to win Coleman/Machar + Wurm need to put up 60+, Southern's arrogance will be their undoing.

Hard to predict North Southern without confirmation of McVeigh. If he's in, they should take it. Jimmas run into form at the right time of year, expect him to be the wildcard. Would expect North to move heaven and earth to make sure Jack is back, without him becomes a lot closer. Southerns chemistry has been great all year but maybe too much on too few made them limp into finals. Dowdell has been one of the disappointments for me for the season. Will need him to show up against Coleman. Think North will get through, McVeigh or no.

Norwood unlike Southern have come into finals purring along. Good news for flames is CJ isn't off to Bali. Forestville will be missing their safety blankets of previous years in Deng and Teys. Can Green and Turnage do enough to keep Mays and Brine off the boards and surprise packet of another Machar brother may be this games wildcard. Think Forestville will just get through unless Harris has bad night.

Tassel and Smith can come off Southern bench and play a role, apart from them nothing, lack of depth will hurt them not arrogance

Well, Nick Wurm just threw away their season. 10 turnovers, but the one when you're up by 2 with the ball and you throw a floater across court leading to a wide open breakaway dunk by Dowdell to send to overtime, that's just next level.

To be fair to Wurm Dowdell hadn't done much all game and wouldn’t have thought that play would have happened

Southern played much better once Koop fouled out. More importantly Deano winning Norths first mens final in years has the curse been cleared?

Main talking point of the weekend is Lachies brother not getting any minutes, is big Greg threatening to walk out and go back to Sturt?

Yeah, not a talking point champ.
And I think Andy will rather have lawyers trying to find loopholes to get DJ, Deng and Teys to qualify for finals, get travel exemptions and wheel out next week.

You can't seriously be defending Wurm on that pass? Even an U10 would know not to throw a floater across the court like that. That play singularly cost them the game, period, and at this level there's no excuse for even attempting that pass. Up 2, with the ball, less than 15 seconds to play, that's a huge choke after playing big to get back from nearly 20 down to lead. Wurm wasn't switched on at all, and he finally paid for his consistent cheating by being teched for faking in the second half. Only hope Williams cops one next week for the same thing, throwing the head back to milk a call from the refs.

Interesting that Andy has kept Machar in starting lineup, has been outstanding since he got minutes when Brine was hurt. But Forestvilles biggest problem has been depth. Keeping Atuer as starter and then rotating Machar through the frontcourt would give them a breather. Not sure if Mays was tired or something else, but Green had some huge plays. Wasn't broken through much of regular season, can the tinkering now come back to hurt them?

Brine wasn't hurt. He was in the hospital with meningitis. I don’t think he’s full recovered either

I think Sturt would feel fine. They were top for a reason.

They were top for first round but second half form was poor with 5W-4L. Eagles, Norwood and North had 7W-2L for the same period.

North struggling to get past Southern I don't think they’re a real threat. Those sides had much more to play for while Sturt were in cruise mode the last 9 rounds

Mcveigh will send the Eagles out in straight sets, heavy reliance on iso ball and expecting the refs to bail you out doesn't work in the finals. Throw in no Deng/Doyle/DJ or Teys to save the day and Andy must be having words with Steven Marshall to shut the Tasmanian border.

In the other match I think Sturt find a way past Norwood this week but the extra week off probably won't help their championship aspirations. Who at Norwood designated Turnage to shoot the technical vs Forestville?

CJ is unquestionably good but Sturt have some players that need attention too. To me I don't know an obvious match-up for Green. Is there anyone in the Sturt team prepared to do the hard nosed stopping of him

Daly is one of the better equipped defenders to slow down Turnage, interested to see that matchup.

On Green he scores a lot of his points on breakdowns or the o-glass, I think the sturt role players will be able to do enough to keep him quiet. Forestville relied on their athleticism to beat him on the glass and he punished them.

Sturts bigs are soft, none of them will stop Green
Daly vs CJ? Daly been flat to the floor all season, CJ just clicking into 2nd gear and ready to cruise

#721 Respectfully disagree, as long as they box him out (Which sturt are well drilled on) don't think that he hurts them.
Sturt lacking bigs will also have Norwood tryin to play through Green in the post. Very much an advantage for Sturt as the possessions will likely end in a turnover or a low percentage shot.

If you look at the 2 encounters already, Green has been very average scoring wise with just 3 points and 4 turnovers in 28 minutes. Did have 13 rebounds, but on paper looks like Sturt shut him down with 1/6 shooting with those turnovers. Took an even spread of scorers as well to take down Sturt, and Spear with an off game.
Sturt have been undersized all year but managed to finish top. Imo Forestville underestimated Green and as mentioned tried to match athleticism with him. May just come down to fundamentals such as boxing out and confusing him in the post.
Even if Turnage scores 30+, Norwood will need a few others in double figures and help off bench.
Is Dech confirmed to be playing? Sixers may not be happy with him playing a couple of tough games coming off injury and such a long break. If he does happen and he's 100%, surely he'll go to Harris. Would assume Mays takes Dowdell and have advantage there, but who out of Machar or Brine take McVeigh and the other will be left with Jimma who's finished off the season strongly, especially on the boards. And would expect Atuer to get way more minutes to guard Williams, no way Rios can guard him. But can see McVeigh flirting with 50 with inexperienced Machar and not 100% Brine guarding him.

Even if Dech plays north can't be favourites against any remaining team can they?
