Deliberately missing in that scenario would be unconventional, but not such a terrible idea. De Colo turned to the bench to check because it was a conceivable strategy. Time was against France so getting an O-board then a 3 would get France within 1, so then France wouldn't be relying on USA to miss free-throws to have a chance.

Missing a free throw and being 4 down still with 8 seconds makes no sense .

The argument for De Colo missing that FT with rough likelihoods (please input your own estimates if you disagree). I am assuming time constraints are similar in both scenarios and ignoring steals as a prospect.

SCENARIO 1: hit free throw, down 3, aim for OT

- hope USA misses 2 free-throws (25% x 25% = 0.0625)
- rebound missed free-throw (80% = 0.8)
(- hope there is time left to put up a 3)
- hit 3 to tie game (40% = 0.4)

Likelihood of OT = 0.0625 x 0.8 x 0.4 = 0.02 = 2%


SCENARIO 2: deliberately miss free-throw, aim for OT or win

- miss free-throw with a firm shot, team crashes boards (to increase chance of O-board) (0.3 = 30%)
- hit 3-pointer (40% = 0.4)
- foul USA
(- hope there is time left to put up a shot)
- hit 2-pointer / 3-pointer (40% = 0.4)

Likelihood of OT or win (if USA misses any FTs) = 0.3 x 0.4 x 0.4 = 4.8%
