It's interesting that Trev referred to a "whirlwind 48 hours" which seems to at least suggest a lack of prior knowledge.

Neilsen would be a somewhat "obvious" choice, but is he better off with his G-League gig? Where he is supposedly being groomed for something bigger in the NBA.

I wonder who gets to make the decision, under the new ownership.

I wonder what Scott Roth is thinking? If he held on or even flunked the interview,he would be logical decision to take over plumb job in Perth opposed to taking JJ job.
Didn't know too much about him, but looking at his Wikipedia page he's gone opposite direction from NBA.

I was more thinking of Jacob Chance and Adam Forde. Forde was supposedly earmarked to replace Gleeson, Trev announced before the GF he was staying put, Forde signed with Cairns and then Chance left for the JJ's. Gleeson also waited until after Norton had re-signed.

Sergio Scariollo (Spain head coach) was lead assistant at Toronto and announced he accepted the head coaching job at Virtus Bologna 3 weeks ago. If that's where Gleeson is headed it has happened in the past 3 weeks.

So the Wildcats would’ve just started their search I suspect. Best nbl job in Aussie I can imagine a lot of interest in it.

You do realise that smoking that much weed can course paranoid delusions?

Dr Jack is 96, and has been looking to pass on the reins for about a year.

Bairstow (once Wagstaff decided to play on) was at best going to kept around as a TP & potential IR. Obviously he would leave for a 3 yr deal.

Steindl's move was orchestrated. Unfortunately he has fulfilled his usefulness for the Cats and was nolonger required. He went with the Wildcats' blessing.

Chance? Yeah, keep toking Koberwallah. With Trev gone, he might have actually had some chance at promotion.
Same with Magnay. A new Perth coach might have offered him more than 20 minutes and the commensurate salary.

The favourite sons strategy has been tried with Mike Ellis and to an extent Scott Fisher, it didn't work.

Rob Beveridge was an established coach and so was Gleeson, they'd likely follow that proven path.

Very tough time for the Wildcats, how do you recruit without a coach, you can recruit per Gleeson's plan but how do you know the next coach will follow the same schemes? Or find a coach that want to run the same thing.

Reply #860582 | Report this post

koberulz

I wouldn't say Fisher "didn't work". It started poorly, but they improved significantly over his tenure.

The thing to keep in mind with both Ellis and Fisher is they had the misfortune of coaching during the "we spent way too much money and need to cut back dramatically" era. Vlahov had retired, Grace was on his way out, Feaster and Harvey both found more money elsewhere, Burston ruined his ankles and with them his career, and we were running with guys like Braith Cox and Matt Shanahan.

I don't think it's fair to hold those coaches solely responsible for the mediocre results in that period.

Ellis I always thought was just the in the right place at the right time. And I've always felt he just wasn't tough enough to be an NBL coach.

Fisher was doing ok. And yes, he coached in an era of low money, and low revenue from the superdome.

I have wondered if Martin would be interested in pursuing a coaching career, but even if so, he'd need to learn the ropes. Transitioning straight into a senior coaching role rarely works well.

If the Cats want a "familiar face," then Neilsen is the only option. Bevo doesn't really count after all this time, and there's still enough people in management that were singed when he decided to burn his bridges.

Will be interested to see which way they go

I'm not sure it's that appealing a job, to be honest.

New ownership, so the notion of coming to an organisation that's built a good culture is a little weak because who knows what stamp SEG are going to want to put on things.

The only certainty is that 35-year playoff streak hanging over your head.

I'd like to see Matty Knight become an assistant coach, as a player he got everything out of his body despite injuries and as a defensive anchor was truly excellent and a mind like his should be invaluable especially working with the bigs and being a Tasmanian that adds to our new favourite rivalry.

What is the "ethics" surrounding coaching contracts?

So the NBA has a vacancy and targets an Australian coach. Obviously no Australian team would stand in the way of an NBA opportunity. But what happens then? Are we limited to coaches out of contract? Or can we similarly approach contracted coaches?

Would an NBA organisation release somebody like Nielsen? Would a Japanese team release someone like Dennis or Henare?
