Breakers roster 20-21

Word is Delaney stays, Tai Webster resigns and Corey Webster will move elsewhere, likely to another NBL club. Roster would look as follow:

Peyton Siva / Will McDowell-White
Tai Webster / Hugo Besson
Tom Abercrombie / Hugo Besson / Rasmus Bach
Finn Delaney / Ousmane Dieng / Kyrin Galloway
Yanni Wetzel / Rob Loe / Sam Timmons

With an extra import up their sleeve to strengthen the roster as needed as the season moves on. Besson being 6'6 should provide for some nice flexibility playing three guards, with WMW also being able/big enough to defend most backup NBL 3s. Dieng will likely see some minutes at the 3 as well. Abercrombie can slide to the 4. Quite a bit of lineup flexibility there.

Can this mean make finals?

Besson has grown and is now 6'5 barefoot. That's obvious on film and it's been reported in France several times, including by the person who reported his signing in the NBL.

Webster has no role on this team and is too expensive to keep just to be an unhappy practice player. He'll move on with the Breakers blessing.

Breakers have a club option on Randolph

So we're going with just one import to start the year? Interesting. Well, given we seem to sack our imports who start the year with the Breakers, at least that's an improvement.

The bench concerns me - I like Loe and was surprised by Bach surprised me, but I can't see how WMW fits in with this team and then you have 3 young guys who we don't know if they're rotation ready to start the season.

Intrigued to see how Tai Webster re-signs if Corey is going to be released (especially since Melbourne United need a backup scorer...)

Bach did well, Bessons last season in div two was excellent, his previous seasons in div one wasn't. Some players have a media machine behind them telling us how good they are, most euro league sides would get him if they really wanted him, money alone, all I’m saying let’s see what pans out before every one gets to excited. Adel to hawks start last season was wiz bang and that worked out well.

Siva definitely showed he can play off the ball last year alongside Jayson Granger and Maodo Lo, two gun PGs, so playing alongside some other good guards shouldn't be a problem considering he shot 40% for 3 in four of his five seasons with Alba .

Note that my prior statement is based on the OP's indication that Levi Randolph won't return. Yes, Besson/Dieng are overseas players, but I'd be surprised if we're expecting either to produce like the imports that have signed this offseason.

What type of import would you target to complete the roster? A wing like Randolph? A 3/4 like Tate (who might block Dieng)? Another true big? Some kind of shooting 4/5?Curious to see how they approach this final signing.

Siva looks awesome with great pedigree assuming he's signed.
Besson looks like a kid with massive upside.
Not sure how it’s all going to fit together with WMW and both Webster brothers and Bach all guards.

Loe is under contract (signed for 3 years in 2020) but is rehabbing his knee after surgery.
Timmons expected to cover until he's right.

Breakers practices will be hard fought battles for court time and I expect with these horses NZ will get out and run at every opportunity.

The French kids are the unknown.
They will have expectations of playing minutes and development.
How will they go in such a physical league with a Coach who has no problem running a short rotation.
They also come into a team with a lot of very experienced professional and international players in Abercrombie, Loe & Corey Webster who will be able to help them on and off the court.

All this is assuming the rumoured signings are true....

Corey over his career has been a walking bucket.
He kept the Breakers in the game against the Phoenix Suns and has done the same for the Tall Blacks over the years at every major tournament they have been in.
Yes he absolutely has had his fair share of issues off the court over the years and to his credit took it all on the chin and dealt with it and moved on.
At least when he speaks he is coming from a place of experience.

Abercrombie and Loe are absolute professionals on and off the court and Abercrombie especially is a highly respected player.

Strange how offended people seem to be at the Breakers adding too much talent in the backcourt, especially after the past two years where they suffered through so many injuries and had so many issues offensively due to a lack of creators in the backcourt. It's a long season and having quality depth is important in this league which has a lot of games in a very short amount of time, especially for a team that is asked to travel longer distances than anyone in the league besides Perth.

If Besson is indeed a second "Next Star do NZ retain Levi Randolph for continuity or go a little larger and bring in a 3/4 or keep an Import up their sleeve in case of injury? If he's an import NZ have 11 rostered players and their squad is complete.

Siva (I) / WMW / Besson (NS/I)
T.Web / C.Web / Bach
Abercrombie / Dieng (NS) / Davidson (DP)
Delaney / Galloway
Wetzell / Loe / Timmons (DP)

At 6.5" Shamir may even elect to play WMW at SF behind Abercrombie.

There's no rule in the NBL about options expiring before free agency. You can sign a player for any duration of time a team desires. One week, one month, one year, etc.

Corey Webster heading to another NBL team. Maybe Brisbane but others involved too

Hmm, a roster without Corey makes a bit more sense, particularly as Bach fills the bench role better.

The Breakers will have 2 DPs, 8 locals, 2 NS and an import (Peyton Siva). I suspect the Breakers can sign a 12th player with the flexibility to wait. Though another import (a combo forward with experience, strength and defensive ability) to offset what I consider a vulnerable bench, that move would hamper court-time for both Besson and Dieng.

At this stage, I'd rather the Breakers go for a local 4 on a short-term contract (Tohi Smith-Milner) or another local DP (Zach Riley has stunned everyone at NZNBL level as a high school student). Any difference in money is best spent on medical specialists who can prevent the annual injury crisis. Give Shamir time to view his rotation and make changes (if needed) after 4-6 weeks (the usual Breakers time for releasing an import).

Wetzell (25) / Loe (20) / Timmins (DP)
Delany (30) / Galloway (5) / Smith-Milner (Spot)
Abercrombie (23) / Dieng^ (10) / Bach (10) / Davidson (DP)
T.Webster (27) / Besson^ (10)
Siva* (30) / WMW (10)

6'0 P.Siva(i)/6'5 W.Mcdowell-White
6'2 C.Webster/6’5 H.Besson(I)/6’4 R.Bach
6’6 L.Randolph(i)/6’6 T.Abercrombie/6’7 I.Davidson(dp)

With 2x next stars NZ probably don't need to make any roster decisions until they have played a few games and can keep 2x Import spots open in case of injury.

Yes there is only 1x ball but with Siva & WMW running the point & the Websters playing SG there should be a lot less iso ball and a ton more ball movement.

The team looks pretty stacked. I look forward to seeing how it all plays out

NZ have passed on Levi Randolph's team option so he’s now a free agent. Above decent import so will probably already have clubs knocking at his door.

Hopson would be a good fit on this team if available.
