Vic State Teams - Denied Entry in WA

WA Government apparently have refused entry for the Vic State Junior teams for the Nationals.

"The government denied the teams' application to use the Bridgetown School Camp as a quarantine facility, about 260km south of Perth, due to the facility not meeting the requirements of no shared facilities and single bathrooms."

Seems pretty straightforward.
Vic's can complain about the drastic measures all they want. Those measures have kept WA as one of the safest places worldwide and has been able to live relatively freely.
Sure it stings nonetheless.

No the WA Police indicated that the site would meet requirements, WA Government said no.

There's an important difference in the detail. Sounds like BV thought the Police saying yes was good enough, it wasn't.

They denied because the camp school didn't have the necessary facilities, in this case individual bathrooms to prevent potential spread if any of the touring party were infected. As a parent of one of the Vic Metro girls I can honestly say whilst it's extremely disappointing for all four teams to be missing out on the tournament, if the shoe was on the other foot and it was us who were hosting and we had WA's lifestyle and quarantine arrangements, I strongly doubt we as a state wouldn't have done the same to them or any other state in the same situation for that matter. Hate on their state government all you want but I for one understand the decision and importance of not risking the lifestyle they have over there at the moment compared to what we've been through the last 18 months. Before criticising other states first, we need to get our own affairs in order and fast so that this doesn't happen again in the future. We have 14 Club Champs at Casey in October, I highly doubt clubs from interstate will be attending if we can't control this thing and get back to some kind of normal, much like WA currently has. People in glass houses and all that nonsense...

It is a balance.... it we police this hard, we are a police nanny state. If we don't police things we are not controlling this enough.
We are going to get the virus into the Country as the Federal Government have our borders open. We will never get out of this expecting to have 0 cases, it is just not attainable.
It is frustrating seeing the rest of the world getting on with life, living with the virus, but we are just shutting off parts of the country from other Australians. The US have vaccinated 160+ million people in 6 months, and we have struggled to get a million done here. And we manufacturer the vaccine in the Country.

D2.0

The Health System in WA is already screwed. Just one more thing that was left stagnate and now can't keep up with the population boom. Massive delays, and all "elective" surgery cancelled.
Perth people are also lazy and complacent.
If Covid gets in here, we are screwed. It would be out of control before we even knew there was a problem, and our health system would collapse.

Now that said, I don't understand why it was apparently so hard to find them suitable accommodation. And I think rejecting their quarantine proposal was illogical. If one athlete was found to have the virus, then the whole team would be shut-out anyway. Yes, spreading is bad, but you have to weigh that against the small possibility that someone brings it with them in the first place.

How much is the rest of the world "getting on with life" though? I'd say overall things are pretty good in Aus, not sure too many other places have had the full capacity mask free runs we have had for most of the year. It's easy to say just get on with it, but are you going to feel that way when you or someone you know are the unfortunate statistic we "just have to live with"?

Dazz, here's a headline, wa govt allowed team into unfit accommodation: now all children have tested positive because there was nowhere to isolate infected individuals. Maybe it should be avoided.

Pretty simple really. Move to QLD for the October Holiday gap. Sorry WA you had your chance but need to be as proactive as possible and move to a state with the least risk involved in hosting. At this stage that would be either QLD or NT

Oh dear...looks like NSW is now a buzzer beater away from a lockdown. ACT a bit wobbly. Considering amount of money parents are spending to attend BA needs fo make a call soon! We're involved but from a state not affected…yet…but really want to play Vic and NSW to see where we at! Sad, but better to delay than other options!

NSW will be made to quarantine as of tomorrow if any new cases come up overnight. With that high likelihood you would hope either Maley or Narcis will show some proactive foresight and announce later tomorrow the postponement of the tournament to the October Holidays with alternate venues in states other than WA on standby if required

Delay then another outbreak happens then what?

WA is currently on another level with how stringent their border control is. Even with the outbreaks as they are now we could still host the championships in Melbourne, Queensland, ACT, NT and in SA.

Good Luck getting any major Junior sporting events in WA in the future.

Dazz...what are you on about, 'WA lazy and complacent' we have had to check in at every venue both indoor and outdoor including supermarkets, restaurants and sporting arenas for more than a year and have done it.

We have had Covid in WA and have contained it each time with numbers barely reaching double figures.

'Ellective surgery cancelled'...its elective and can be delayed and was only delayed while the lockdown was on.

WA is now back to zero restrictions, 100% capacities and no square meter restrictions. What they did to the Vic Junior team was shit, they should of got them alternative accommodation and paid the difference. But to say that WA should not get any other competitions is a bit far. To execute a state for how they are trying to keep their people safe in a pandemic is harsh. Should we go to war with Singapore because they closed their borders? Or Japan because we they won't let us cheer on our Olympians?

SA, Qld, Vic all have restrictions now in place regarding hot spots in Sydney. If the spread grows those restrictions will too. This is not a WA against the world debate.

If the Fed Government had done their job of creating and managing effective quarantine facilities, not letting cruise ships land for their family and friends, got enough safe vaccines for the entire population and managed its distribution we could be restriction free. But they failed at all of the above. Forcing the State Premiers to do the job for them.

We should all be angry, but direct that anger at those to blame.

Either run the event as planned with those able to attend or call it off again.

WA govt just put hard closure on NSW...they aren't going to run a nationals with two states missing! 8 teams out…

Of course WA may reopen for VIC…maybe but time running out for BA to make a call.

BA seem to be twiddling their thumbs, though I am certain they are busily weighing up their options.

They could run the tournament without Vic & NSW, but they can hardly call it Nationals. The NSW and Vic teams could have their own tourney (once it's 'safe’!) and BA could either declare both GF winners as joint title holders, or arrange a title match for the winning teams. Can’t see it happening, but I hate the thought of young people missing out on much more :(

Coping with disappointment is a vital life skill, though at some point these lessons cease to build resilience and end up generating bitterness. I hope something can be sorted out for these kids.

Southern Cross Challenge cancelled, Melbourne Classics cancelled...I don't think you can have a nationals when two states are missing, esp the two states that will miss. Time to postpone (not cancel) and try later in year, (Sept). Yes same thing might happen but better than what is looming. If go ahead be a short week, with 4 teams missing in boys and girls.

Until the federal government get their act together (or are kicked out next election so the other mob can fix up their mess) this will continue to occur.

Rather intrigued that BA has not confirmed either way that this Championship is going ahead or being postponed. Is this normal in this not so normal situation? It's getting pretty close for parents/supporters to be able to cancel accommodation/flights etc without penalty?

There are still 18/26 teams playing so as unfortunate as it is that 2 states will be missing, I can't see any reason to postpone or cancel. There is no guarantee that the same thing wont happen in Sept/Oct, might be different states 'missing' then that can play now. Covid is an unpredictable beast - however like any sporting event you can only compete against who is there on the day. The show must go on.
