NBL1 West - June

June thread.

Wolfpack kick off the month by playing tonight against Perry Hawks.

A rare Wildcats-Wolfpack double header on a Tuesday. That's got to be a first.

Joondalup Men were made to look very old and very slow tonight. Father time has definitely caught up with Salinas and Iliadis, then the likes of Ironmonger and Wellstead just haven't progressed enough in their development to be the next stars the Wolves need. Credit to the Hawks and Coach Parsons. He may have his knockers, but yet again he has a deep team who each play their role and do what's best for the team. Mitch Clarke was superb tonight and more play like that could see him on the NBL radar fairly soon. Wolves with a danger home game against the inconsistent Giants on Sunday, whilst the Hawks make the short trip north in the Western Suburbs Derby as they take on the all conquering Senators at Warwick on Saturday night which has NBL1 West Game Of The Week billing all over it.

The Wolves were terrible on every level. If it wasn't for some last quarter stat hunting from the Wolves import the score line could have looked way worse. The Wolves 7 coaches need to get their team in order quickly or it’s going to cost them a playoff spot come end of season. They have no cohesion as a team and no real identity on either offense or defense.

Could it be the Wolves are paying the price for not developing their own juniors after many years of recruitment. Hope Ironmonger is ok. Looked like a bad injury.

Wolves have some good junior talent that just arent ready yet

on paper they have a very good roster and should figure it out soon. its early in the season still

hawks have great chemistry which is definitely reflective of the coaching and environment/culture he has created there. They arent the strongest roster on paper but they consistently play to their peak and get the most out of their guys.

Buccs seem to be really struggling this year?

Giants up and down

Tigers are in great form under new coach Adam Nener

Senators taking their first loss of the season as Lakeside seem to be starting to hit their stride. Bowie is balling right now

Last nights game of Wolves Vs Hawks was extremely disappointing from a long time Wolves supporter. There did not appear to be a lot of cohesion in the team. I hope it improves very quickly.

I must congratulate the Hawks team who shot extremely well and showed a lot of determination and team work.

I hope the Wolves learnt something from this game.

Summerville will be coach if the year. No question about that. He will get them working - this is a successful Vic coach, he won't have any trouble working out the WA local teams.

FOH with the COTY talk. Summerville had 6 assistants on his bench and couldn't work out how to beat a zone defense last night. He’s looked out of his depth. He had no answers at all to counter anything the Hawks did. His player rotations are horrendous and his lack of in game adjustments are as bad as Ettridges were. Not sure he even has a job after this season.

The Wolves' 4-3 record is flattering. Their 3 losses (Senators, Giants & Hawks) have been by a combined 70 points.

While their 4 wins - Eagles (twice), Suns, Magic - have been against teams with a combined 4-15 record.

from the wolfpack website

Summerville's professional coaching CV is as impressive as it is extensive, inclusive of SEABL, QBL and Big V Head Coaching duties at several notable clubs, NBL Assistant Coaching duties with the Brisbane Bullets, college level experience as Assistant Coach with the University of Toronto and the Martin Methodist College Redhawks, as well as NBA Development coaching experience with the Toronto Raptors.

Supporting Andrew’s coaching experience is extensive expertise in scouting and recruitment, having held the role of Head Scout and Recruiting Coordinator with the University of Tennessee, as well as being the Australian based scout for four US colleges and having previously owned a US college recruitment service.

Andrew’s basketball philosophies are well suited to the Wolfpack Men’s program, and his broad experience in the game in high-quality programs, across several continents, provides the level of knowledge and diversity desired for the role.

Wolves may still have players to bring in.

Giants are a good team and played well as a team against wolves despite their injuries. They have lost 2 starters to injury in a matter of weeks. Most teams would struggle under these circumstances.

Lakeside are looking very strong with Shervill and Mackenzie in the line up to bolster Bowie, Isenbarger and Armour. They shot the ball extremely well on the weekend.

Nener is a good coach and doing a great job with that Tigers team. He probably didnt get the credit he deserved with limited resources at Cougars.

Warwick are going to be tough to beat with their roster now also being bolstered by the signing of Riak.

Wolves have two quality players (Newton and Roberts) so will be top 4.

Giants have an underperforming team hit by injuries with the coaching group struggling to get it all together.

Lakeside are quality and when on there is no better team currently IMO.

Good to see Tigers post Black era having some success but won't seriously compete against top 4.

Warwick, Hawks, Lakeside, Wolves for me.

Wolves probably too far back. Bringing in another 2 might sound good on paper but chemistry could be an issue.

Tigers just brought in a big kid back from college who will give them some more depth. They have given themselves a good head start and should be able to cement top 4. How well they go after that is a bonus after underachieving the last few years and not even among finals

Senators and hawks gf, way ahead of the pack.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, they are all quality until they actually get here and play.
There's been lot's of duds in the league previously who were so called 'quality players" prior to their arrival.
If it's the same Roberts as last time he was pretty ordinary then so hopefully they aren't spending too much on him this time.

Nearly halfway point awards

Women's
MVP - Alex Sharp, front runner by a mile.
Most Improved - Mackenzie Hoycard, huge numbers improvement and wayyyy fitter
COTY - Ty Thwaites, they haven't made top 4 in nearly 20 years
Best Defensive - Carly Boag, with the amount of points they give up, she's defending a heap of them..

Men's
MVP - Bowie, they win enough games with him front and centre.
Most Improved - Isaac Gattorna
COTY - Adam Nener, took a program struggling to bigger heights
Best Defensive - Jarrod Prue, no brainer

Can't see Jervis having too much issue fitting in with Petrik's system. If they can gel, their top 8 is as good as any in the League

Bench - Bior, Durnin, C Beard

I thought the piss take was TT as women's COTY. Overlooking the fact Thwaites' cheque book and role as GM meant he was never going to put a bad adopted family team on court, in all seriousness if anyone expected the Eagles women to be where they are then that's the real troll award here. If the EP women do end up making the finals, Blake Srdarev should win COTY easily

EP are paying more players and have recruited a whole new team haha. Of course they're better and they'll maybe scrape into the 8. They've beaten Mandurah, Bunbury, Lakeside and a Wolves side with most of their talent on the sideline.

Cougars have not made top 4 in 15 years.

Sack Cooper. Great junior coach but just has not got the buy in from the team and results would point to how much it shows. Does he have the budget of some of the contenders, no. But the team is playing with no heart or purpose and it's getting bloody embarrassing to watch week in and week out. Have a more than capable replacement in Andy available and he might even entice some talent to come to the club. Something has to change urgently!

mandurah sign Machado (NBL, ex-NBA player).

other clubs should be asking questions about salary caps.

grace williams smith carlwell garnett-shaw plus other locals all on $$$ already now adding machado who would be asking for big $$$

never thought id see the day we would be questioning the perennially broke magic's big spending on their perennially mediocre mens team.

does the league now turn a blind eye to this knowing the amount of publicitiy this signing brings to the nbl1 west?

who's paying? domestic players wabl families or sponsorship?

Cockburn live-stream must be the worst in all of NBL1. What an absolute horrific camera placement and angle. It's like they went to Bunnings and bought a security camera. That fishbowl view makes me nauseas. For a club that is supposedly growing they have made a mess of the one aspect they have to showcase their product to their fans and possible new fans.

The ceiling-mounted AI cameras really only work if you can put them far enough away. It looks decent at Bendat.

Was it raining during the women's game? A slippery, heavy ball and muddy conditions are the only explanation I can think of for a 74-45 final score.

Weekend Whispers

Luke Travers to Mandurah - Confirmed by multiple sources, media release by the end of the week
Kevin White to Rockingham - Was there two years ago and would be a more than handy backup to Godfrey plus the addition of Jervis, makes the Flames genuine contenders
John Mooney on the market - Perth / Perry Lakes as the front runners
Wani Swaka Lo Buluk - Will be in Senators colours as early as this weekend if we are not in lockdown
Clint Steindl - To be back at the Hawks once he gets over his injuries from the GF series

Giants are done, too many injuries and not enough depth for their squad. expect same changes come end of year to the playing roster and imo the coaching staff needs changing as well.

Cougars have defo underperformed and would be disappointed with their position in the half way mark - but they are not alone also.

Buccs similar to Giants with injuries and underperforming recruits with no depth.

Certainly some changes to come in the 2nd half of the season - will be an interesting one
