BIG V Mid season discussion

We have just ticked over the mid season point. What is everyones predictions, surprises, disappointments so far

Predictions - the rest of the season will be as shit and underwhelming as the first half

Surprises - seeing the sad state of affairs this league has become

Disappointments - state champ divisions feature a bunch of teams made up of players who in the past have been barely relevant in the d2's.

Looking forward to more shit associations without any infrastructure, planning or development joining this basket case of a competiton to glorify players who can’t hit an open shot or make a layup

So you bag how Big V is run and the players. Wow you not selected.
To above Anon sad your comments are about other teams that you must play against or you from a supporter of your team. Why because with no public assess to game tape you had to be at the games. Or where you....just another " come in spinner"

Despite the attempts by the pathetic flog above to drag this thread down. There is plenty to talk about!

How good is the Wallan men's import

Great to see Altona men’s turn the corner after a few lean years

RMIT showing up all the haters

Some interesting things for sure.

Keilor doing very well in Champ men - have finally fully given over the keys the the Spencer / Lukey back court. Some home grown talent which is always nice to see.

Blackburn have been a shamble, some real heinous efforts when watching their game.

Wyndham on the other hand have been solid with no real "Stars" on their roster.

In D1M Keysborough look likely to run the table, does anyone think they won't win let alone drop a game?

D2M is interesting with some big disparities between the teams. Wallan should be much better in my opinion, yes their import is dominating but with the scoring talent around him he could make the game much easier for himself.

Rmit have come a long way from their first season where they were a one man bad solely relying on Cofey, does anyone know whats spurred on this change? Will be interesting to see how they fare for the rest of the season and more importantly against Altona

Having seen games in both divisions I can say D2 is better than D1 this season

Low to mid ranked D2 teams were easily beating Champ men's teams preseason

Biggest disappointment - Casey Men
Biggest surprise / most impressive - Wallan's gun import

Wallan's import is just far too athletic for the people guarding him, helps when he has shot 40 more freethrows than the next closest person. Would be interesting to see how he fares against more athletic on-ball defenders and smarter help defence in higher levels.

good to see him padding those numbers late in blowout games when the other teams benches are in.

Over Big V sledging. It is a tier of basketball engagement in Victoria that keeps a pathway open for Juniors. Stop sledging and be grateful that it exists, I will take the good, bad and the ugly ,over paid, not paid , undermanned and stacked with a import any day as we sit in another lockdown. Get a life keyboard warrior and volunteer at your nearest club , no actually do not we do not need knockers like you.
PS Grading is an option lets start grading in October and finish around March then play a season...lol

State champ men worries me.

In my opinion
A) there is hardly any teams in it
B) only has clubs from Melbourne
C) some teams are going to eventually go to NBL1. What then? Will the run a 5 team competition?
D) it has lost the professionalism it once had
E) there are teams in both D1 and D2 that should be playing SCM but Big V keep playing favourites
F) apart from games being live streamed, what sets this a part from D1 and D2?
G) Big V has stopped promoting it

Prove me wrong

this would be the ideal time to reshuffle some of the teams. when you see some of the scores, it makes no sense especially with the facts that collingwood and coburg are playing with an import and still getting beat bad

I know that everyone thinks D2 "is lit" but Camberwell's import shows there is a decent jump from D2 to D1. Just look at his numbers.

The jump to Champ men from D1 is next to nothing this year.

camberwell's import wasn't even all star 5 in d2. big difference between top imports and other imports around the league, some can make jumps, some can't

^ If we're talking about Barkley, that Camberwell import averaged 20ppg on a 20-win team that lost in the grand final and was promoted? Just looked and he’s averaging 18ppg now on one of the top teams in D1.

Not many imports in D1M and the overall quality is really poor, so this seasons numbers (18ppg) not a true reflection.

If D1M was anywhere near its previous standard think Camberwell import would really struggle.

Agree standard isn't great. That’s fair enough then... not sure he would struggle but maybe not average 18-20 sure.

Barkeley wouldn't have any problems. His numbers may have dropped as well because it seems others on the Camberwell team are also scoring more points. May not have had as much support in 2019?

The top couple of Division 2 teams could definitely compete in Division 1 but to say that the whole division is better than division 1 is rubbish.

It certainly would be interesting what teams want to do in 2022, I am hoping there are some clubs who put their hands up for relegation so that divisions can be evened out again.

Overall the Division 1 Women seems like the division that has been impacted the least. Some almost random results creating a very even competition.

max is a good player and a great fit in the camberwell system! some imports are asked to come in and score 40 like sharif at wallan, others like max fill a role and make the team better without having to do so. at the end of the day, the goal is to win and camberwell is doing a good job of doing that this year

Camberwell as a team a loads better than they were when they were runners up in D2M. Ed Bourke is a great addition and Nat Ohara has come back after missing 2019.

If that doesn't show there is a difference between the two comps I don't know what will.

#863 exactly right. If anything, 18 a game on a team like this is impressive and not a detriment.

And as #850 said, his role is much different than an import like Sharif... he's in a better comp, has a legit big, takes 10 less shots per game. Sharif would dominate any comp in Big V as well though I’m not trying to say otherwise!

"The goal is to win..."

The most logical thing I've seen on hoops in a while! Camberwell using young men from their juniors pathway, a gun import who fits their system/culture perfectly. Get promoted first season with him, now near the top of the ladder halfway through the D1M fixture as well.

Could be the most well-run club out east and in that Boroondara area.

Camberwell a good chance to win D1M

Wallan a long way off winning D2M despite their import averaging 40

the most balanced teams win championships... 1 guy is not enough, wallan has plenty of talent but the show goes through 1 guys vs altona and rmit and where it is balanced. camberwell could win d1 with the same spread but keysborough is the still favorites as they have many weapons as well. hopefully big v will restart so we can see the rest of the year play out

Hopefully the Big V uses this as an opportunity for a complete reshuffle.

Maybe base it on the accumulative results over the last 2 or 3 seasons.

Wyndym and Sunbury going up to NBL1 next year leave only 8 teams in SCM.

LaTrobe City returning to the league next year will make 33 teams across SCM, D1M and D2M.

Should the Big V go with 3 divisions of 11?

Who should be in what divisions?

Reply #851177 | Report this post

Casey haven't been shy in expressing their desire for NBL1 either. Not sure if NBL1 have a cap on how many teams, but if those 3 (I'd have thought Keilor over Sunbury), that'd make 21 in NBL1.
I'd imagine they'd want an even number though.

Big V though does need a shake up. Need to drop the 'State Champ' from the title of the top division for starters and work their way down from there.

Have a Division 1 & Division 2 or a larger Division 1 with conferences.
Everything below that should be regionalized conferences, and try and bring in more country Associations for the lower tiers. All Big V focus should then be on that top Division.

This would be a similar structure to English Football.

EPL = NBL1
The Championship = Big V Division One
League One = Big V Division Two
National League (East & West) = Lower Regionalized conferences

Casey will miss out on NBL1 because there needs to be a balance on where teams are from. Look how many teams in the South East of Melbourne.

Hardly any from North West of Melbourne.

who cares about preseason? some players play, some don't... the fact is both are undefeated at this point with high level players on both teams. reshuffle this offseason and start over. blackburn has not shown they deserve to be in scm, they play with no effort or heart and look bad week in and week out. coburg and melbourne uni and collingwood don't look good in d1

Why? Next VC will have limits on locations. If teams teams are approved it shouldn't matter where they are located.

If all the big v divisions are as equal as people are saying why not have a once off season next year with all teams in one comp but in conferences based geographically?

Then for the following year take the top teams from the comp into champ men, middle teams into D1 and bottom teams into D2

User pay system. SCM/SCW around $7000 to enter, you need at least 1 import and lots of clubs cannot afford this. If you have the cash and can prove you can put a decent team together " Bingo " you are in.
