NBL1 West Power Rankings - Men

1. Warwick Senators (5-0 record)
Haven't been challenged yet, winning every game so far by 20+ points. And the return this week from college of Alier Riak gives them firepower off the bench. However their schedule to-date hasn't been tough (Redbacks, Slammers twice, Wolves, Magic), so this weekend's game against the Lightning will tell us where they are.

2. Lakeside Lightning (3-1)
Their starting-5 (Prue, Shervill, Bowie, Isenbarger, Armour) is as good as any going around, and there's word that Rowan Mackenzie will be returning soon from the USA. But they are old and injury-prone (Jay Bowie has already missed 3 games) so Corey Shervill is the key. A big test against the Senators this week.

3. Rockingham Flames (4-2)
Despite a surprise loss to the Buccs a couple of weeks ago, they are a top-4 team, particularly after Tom Jervis joins them in a few weeks. The are deep and have plenty of firepower. But like the Lightning, player availability could be an issue, especially with Greg Hire who seems to pick and choose which game to play. Should get up at home against a hot-and-cold Cougars team on Saturday night.

4. Perry Lakes Hawks (4-1)
Typical meat-and-potatoes Hawks squad this year who just get the job done without any fuss or glamour. They are big but also have a strong outside game. A trip up to Geraldton can never be taken for granted, but they will be too big and have too much firepower for a struggling Buccs line-up.

5. Goldfields Giants (3-2)
A lot of new faces means they need time to gel, and it looks like it all came together last week with their dismantling of a full-strength Wolves line-up. Another tough test this week against an emerging Tigers team, but home court advantage and a size advantage should be enough to get them over the line.

6. Joondalup Wolves (3-2)
On paper they are as deep and strong as any team in the competition, but sometimes that can bite you on the backside. Coach Summerville seems to be struggling in finding what his best line-up is, and has started 9 different players so far. And what's with Rob Huntington and Majier Garang averaging a combined 30mins per game? That said, they will be far too strong for the Eagles tonight.

7. Willetton Tigers (4-1)
Probably need to be ranked a bit higher, but they have overachieved in some ways and need to beat the Giants this weekend to move up the rankings. That aside, after this weekend they have games against the Suns, Eagles, Magic and Slammers, so June will be a great month for them. July is a different story altogether with the Senators, Lightning, Giants and Flames likely to push them to middle-of-the-standings.

8. Cockburn Cougars (2-3)
At the moment they are struggling to find where they are at. Their form seems to mirror the form of Nic Pozoglou who is averaging 20ppg (at 55% FG) and 14reb in their two wins, but only 13ppg (30%) and 9reb in their 3 losses. Travel to Rockingham this weekend where the Pozoglou clamps will be applied, dropping the Cougars to 2-4.

9. Mandurah Magic (2-3)
Showed promise early but their two wins were against teams in the bottom half of the standings. Jerami Grace is having a standout year, but considering they are a big team, their leading rebounder is averaging just 5.8 per game. Interesting battle versus the Redbacks at home this Saturday night, which could go either way. But they will drop down the rankings with a loss.

10. Geraldton Buccaneers (1-2)
There's a case to have them ranked lower, but the addition of ex-Darwin import Elijah Barbour gives them that extra firepower they are missing. Barbour, Muo and Wattie should hold their own against the Hawks on Saturday, but veteran bigs Matt Wundenberg and Aaron Ralph will find it tough going against the elite Perry Lakes frontcourt.

11. Perth Redbacks (2-3)
They are just missing one player (shooter) to be a top-8 team. Where are you Marshall Nelson? You add him to Timms, Gattorna, Jackson and Wagner, and that's a playoff-bound line-up. But for now they are one of those teams in the mix for the last (8th) playoff spot. A win over Mandurah on Saturday will push them into that spot.

12. East Perth Eagles (1-6)
Despite losing to them last week, we have them ranked higher than the Slammers simply due to them having a stronger line-up. That loss was down in Bunbury, the night after a tough loss to the Redbacks, and against a fresh South West. So understandable in some ways. Whether they can remain ranked above the Slammers could be determined by how well they play against the Wolves tonight.

13. Kalamunda Eastern Suns (0-4)
Some had them as a sneaky chance for a top-8 spot this year, however, and to be blunt, they have been awful. They have lost by an average of 28 points, including a 43-point loss to the Hawks last week. A chance to finally get on the board this weekend against the Slammers in match-up of the cellar dwellers. And with home court advantage, they should be able to chalk up their first NBL1 victory.

14. South West Slammers (1-5)
Have copped some beltings this year, but to their credit they hung tough for a double OT win over the Eagles last week. Have a chance for two on the trot this weekend with a victory over the winless Eastern Suns in what could be, and we are not kidding, the game of the round. A loss however will keep them at the foot of the rankings.

Marshall Nelson hasn't played in Iceland for over month now. Is he back?

How does a team 4-1 that has two of their wins over teams you've ranked above them get so low?

Heard tigers have another big joining in few weeks which will help their depth at the front court.

Big statement or just had a good shooting night whilst Warwick had the complete opposite. Great win on the road for the Lightning but the live and die on the perimeter mantra will only get you so far.

As at 2nd June 2021

1. Lakeside Lightning (4-1 record)
Last Week: 2nd
Zapped the Senators to claim top spot in the Rankings. Now have Rowan McKenzie back to add to an already impressive line-up, and an NBL-friendly draw should see Corey Shervill only miss one or 2 more games at most. Expect an ugly score against the Slammers on Friday night, but will find it a bit tougher against the Giants on Saturday. Should win both though.

2. Warwick Senators (5-1)
Last Week: 1st
Challenged for the first time on the weekend and they failed. Another tough assignment this weekend against the Hawks and they will drop out of the top-2 with a loss. That said, they should get the win at home.

3. Perry Lakes Hawks (6-1)
Last Week: 4th
Showing their class with big wins over the Buccs and Wolves, and feature in this week's Game-of-the-Round against the Senators. Will go down in a close one.

4. Rockingham Flames (5-2)
Last Week: 3rd
Drop down a spot in the rankings mainly based on having one of the 'lighter' schedules so far - they have only played two games against teams who currently sit in the top-8. Should cruise past the Magic this Friday night.

5. Willetton Tigers (5-1)
Last Week: 7th
Move up two spots following their one-point win over the Giants. They are not deep and can't afford an injury to Scott or Vigor, but those two should see plenty of rest this weekend as they should block out the Suns easily.

6. Goldfields Giants (3-3)
Last Week: 5th
Had the win sewn up against the Tigers but blew a 13-point lead in the last 5 minutes. Tough roadtrip this weekend which will see them lose to Lakeside but they'll bounce back by beating the Wolves for the second time this year.

7. Joondalup Wolves (4-3)
Last Week: 6th
Struggling to find their mojo, and it showed against the Hawks last night. Only have the one game (Sunday) this weekend, and will be the fresher or the two teams, but lack of confidence is a killer and the Giants will have the edge.

8. Cockburn Cougars (2-4)
Last Week: 8th
At the moment they are just hanging onto 8th in the rankings, and the Magic are right on their tail. Luckily for them it will stay that way after this weekend as they should get up in both of their games (Eagles & Redbacks).

9. Mandurah Magic (3-3)
Last Week: 9th
Resisted any bite from the Redbacks last Saturday, and will hope to extinguish the Flames this weekend. An upset win over Rockingham, however, cannot be ruled out, but we can't see it happening.

10. Perth Redbacks (2-4)
Last Week: 11th
Lost a tight one to the Magic last week, and find themselves up against a similar-quality team in the Cougars this week. They're not quite top-8 yet and will slip to 2-5 with a loss to Cockburn.

11. Geraldton Buccaneers (1-3)
Last Week: 10th
The addition of an import didn't really help on Saturday night and they are really missing their second-best player (Wattie). Have a Magic/Suns roadtrip this weekend and unfortunately we can see them lose both.

12. East Perth Eagles (1-7)
Last Week: 12th
Have now lost a league-high six straight games, and only two of those were against teams with a winning record. Expect that to become seven straight after playing the Cougars.

13. South West Slammers (2-5)
Last Week: 14th
Have won two more games than most people would have thought, but to be fair they were against two teams with a combined 1-12 record. Although they are at home, they're up against a team who beat them by 69 points three weeks ago. Enough said.

14. Kalamunda Eastern Suns (0-5)
Last Week: 13th
Not sure what is going on up in the hills. They have an import (eight other teams do not), and they certainly don't have the worst Aussie line-up going around. Will lose their 6th in a row on Saturday but will bounce back for their first win of the season on Sunday against a weary Buccs.

If the Suns lose to the Buccs on Sunday and go 0-2 for the weekend, is it fair to say Utley's job is in alot of danger up at Ray Owen?

If Hawks can execute and play with the same intensity they normally do they'll handle the senators

If the suns lose?
You mean when the suns lose.
Back to back losses coming up.
Utley has done a reasonable job for the last 2years.
The culture of that club is and always has been the problem.
They reap what they sow.
Worst club in Perth no question.
