Women's 3x3 Olympic Qualifiers

Matches start in Austria on Wednesday, and we're already off to a bad start

Australia's 3x3 women’s basketball team missed their flight to Europe for their Olympic qualifying tournament after Basketball Australia failed to secure them travel exemptions to leave the country.
The five-player squad was due to fly to Austria for its FIBA Olympic qualifying tournament from Melbourne Airport on Saturday at 11pm, but the players arrived to find they didn’t have the exemptions needed to leave the country.

'Administrative error’ leaves Olympic hopefuls stranded at the airport

Our team:
Bec Cole
Alice Kunek
Maddie Garrick
Keely Froling
Lauren Scherf

That sounds like a well-run organisation.

Is there no 'blood rule' in 3x3?

I dont understand why Spain wouldn't qualify with Japan hosting the games???

Japan still had to qualify even though they're hosting. They would’ve gotten a 2nd chance if they didn’t qualify last night.

Anyone know - many teams will compete in the womens section in tokyo? I do wonder if other inclusions can beat spain or Australia.

Got to question Australia's selection policy in the womens draw. Australia selected 4 players with similar medium sized build and skill sets. The more successful teams selected players who are more likely to provide superior matchups - whether it be in terms of size, speed or outside shooting.

It seems to be pretty ad hoc

Kunek may have missed a crucial lay up at the end but thought the shot selection of Garrick and her inability to score or create off the dribble was awful.

Shooting % would not be pretty reading.

They missed about 10 layups in the pool play also.

Need to consider selecting a bigger/stronger body forward for future teams. Got out rebounded 14-21, the Spanish big girl was the highest performer in regards to shooting efficiency & value and caused mismatches on the rim.

Aussie girls jacked up too many 3's also, 1/10....

They had Lauren Sherf there.. Garrick
Killed them.. that group won Asia so. Their prep was bad due to Covid. I don't think Kunek played 3X3 in a year and a half. USA men got upset also so don’t read too much into the women loosing.

There seemed to be a pretty clear scout to drive on Garrick, drive, drive and drive, Kunek has just completed a pretty successful season in Europe as have the others in the WNBL hub and NBL1 etc, Seems the coaches just didn't adapt or had too much condfidence in the girls which is understandable, they did the job every other time.
The game seems a little faster now other countries are putting time and effort into it. We had a camp full of a good mix in terms of positions and came out with the same team. Learnings to be had here I hope

Agree they drove at Garrick a lot and scored on her a lot, also got done back door once, maybe played too tight on her player. Not a great all round game by her, plenty of il-advised shots also.

They dropped that first game to Japan , it was a shocker, girls were still jet lagged, hadn't played together, word is Cole didn’t have the best camp either, but the physicality of that game and the no calls, it was a blood bath.
They matched well with Spain, but the blood rule should have been brought into play, she was bleeding profusely from her nose .
The overall style is changing, less skill more brawn, it literally was like a smash and grab comp, when it was first introduced as a sport it was great to watch, now it’s simply legal thuggery lol
