David Andersen joins MU

Melbourne United sign club legend David Andersen as injury replacement.

Melbourne United have signed Championship winner David Andersen for the remainder of the NBL21 Season. Andersen will join the squad as an injury replacement for Jack White.

The 212cm veteran most recently played in the NBL with the Illawarra Hawks, but Melbourne United fans will remember him fondly as a key member of the 2017/18 Championship team.

Andersen has achieved success throughout his whole career, winning three EuroLeague championships and numerous trophies in Italy, Russia, Spain, Turkey and France, in addition to the championship ring he earned with United.

It is that winning pedigree that made him the viable replacement for White at this late stage of the season, suggested Head Coach Dean Vickerman.

"He (Andersen) is just a great fit for us right now, we're really excited for him to join our group," Vickerman said.

“We feel as though he can step up on the court when required, and we can have full confidence in him due to his ability and experience.

“But the biggest thing from adding a player like DA to this squad is the winning culture that he will drive. He has been a winner his whole career, and the experience he will add is invaluable. We’re adding a bona fide leader who will already have the complete trust of the group.

“His talent, his relentless winning mentality and his experience are all pieces that will help us get closer to winning this Championship. We feel as though this is our time.”

Andersen will suit up in his #13 jersey tonight in the away game against the South East Melbourne Phoenix in Throwdown VIII. Tip-off at John Cain Arena is at 5:30pm.

Feel sorry for the young guys that have been doing well, yes ando has had a wonderful career but I hope he's just emergency at the end of the bench.

Perth get magnay, United gets ando. That’s about equal. Lol.

They have Ballarat. McDonald and Igor also out so are looking pretty depleted at the moment.

Does the NBL have to be the most risk averse league in the world.

Give a young guy a go? No way.

Due to proximity to David's retirement village, Melbourne are set to play all home games for the rest of the season.

Not much of a consolation considering both the Hawks & Phoenix had good looks at him over the off-season and passed.

Why wouldn't you pass on him at NBL level? He played last weekend in a "stacked" Franga side and they lost. NBL1 level. He should have retired a fair while ago, sad end to his career.

They're not going to need much from him this season. He's a veteran presence, good for a few minutes a game. Smart, can shoot the rock. There are far worse players in the NBL right now than a 41 year old David Anderson and I think it was a reasonable signing given their situation.

Off topic I know but having watched Deng Acouth for the last 3 games in NBL1 how the hell did he play anything elite. He would have to be one of the worst players I have ever seen. #Woeful

Wasn't Deng Acuoth sitting behind United's bench wearing one of their team polo's the other day?
