Breakers v Cats May 1

New Zealand host the (almost) top of the table Cats at the Silverdome. Last time they played, the Breakers took home the Gold over in Perth, but Perth will be looking to give the silver medal to the Breakers tonight.

Perth have the best % this season, but have been as successful as hanging onto top spot as a WA Liberal politician was handing onto his seat. The home sick Breakers will be heading home soon and the second thing they'll do is put their bags down. While they couldn't get a win in Abba's big game, perhaps they can make amends tonight.

But Wildcats play like Devils and I expect they'll walk away with Gold from Launceston

This will be close. Every second game the Breakers play well. So it could be unlucky for Perth and the Breakers will take some confidence into this one. Apparently, Tai Webster wanted to play Wednesday so they must be confident he's ready to go. It should be a great game.

Is this the Shamir narrative?

Have poor chemistry the first part of the season, and horrible injury luck that means you're running 6-man rotations.
Change some core players.
Get your rotation back, fully healthy with 12 games to go.
Go on a run that makes you look like championship contenders.
Miss the playoffs on points differential.

I'm weary that the last point is going to happen again. My goodness, what a game.

That was an awesome game. Highlights from both teams. Good quality basketball at both ends. No real reffing blunders.

Something for the Perth haters to consider is that Perth team outside of Cotton and Mooney is pretty average. Norton and Blanchfield are serviceable but probably on the bench elsewhere, Wagstaff is a wily vet, but Bairstow, White, and Jervis are shit. On paper, that Breakers team should be owning them by 20. The way however that they stayed in this game with great defence, tenacity on the glass, and repeatedly getting easy looks by knowing their offence and how to counter the defence was pretty to watch. You gotta admire them.

The Webster brothers are a menace if they're only playing 20-25 minutes. If WMW can start hitting the 3 regularly, this team is going to shape the playoffs if not sneak in. Breakers win 4 of their last 6 but dropping that Cairns game really hurts.

Tai Webster +13. I think a lot of people misunderstood his game when they were low on players and his usage was super high, but he made some big plays tonight, shot the ball well, and made some key assists to keep the Breakers in there.

Randolph can play. His inconsistency has more to do with him still learning the systems and his teammates than his ability.

" Tai and Corey should both be starting. They are the best players on this team."

I actually like them playing fresh late. Tai had the energy for the rejection on Cotton then the transition basket the other way next possession. It's really hard to guard if you have Iverson setting screens for them and then Abercrombie (who is well and truly out of that horrendous shooting slump) and Randolph or Delany in the corners. That’s one of the best fives in the league and if it’s attacking you fresh late game, it’s really hard to defend if you’ve had guys like Cotton and Mooney having really high usage to that point.

" Stand on the outside. Colton will do some on ball screens. "

The system is a little bit more complicated than that in terms of the seals and the spots players need to get to for penetration and pitch. When Tai and Loe were on together late, you saw their chemistry; Randolph just doesn't know where people are going to be. This is a Perth strength - player retention and chemistry - and was a big one for the Breakers before but has been lost in the Walsh era as the team has been rebuilt each year. Keeping Ili, rather than the RJ Hampton experiment, may have been better and we haven’t seen any imports play back to back seasons yet.

Reply #846055 | Report this post

Perth had an extra 21 2 point field goal attempts for less free throw attempts, no reward for putting heat on the rim at all. The haters happy to see perth lose will all be happy to call it "salty perf" fans but if it was the other way round with those stat's they would be up in arms crying that cotton gets foul calls when shooting from 3 for "kicking" his legs out. The league has set a dangerous precedent, bitch in press conferences and influence the way games are called. Mooney especially should have gone to the line far more often.

No 088 I'm suggesting that you are more likely to draw a foul when attacking the rim, aka a 2point fga the when jacking a three. So when one team has 21 more shots from 2, watching the game I don't remember that many long twos it is a bit of an anomaly

"Iverson was completely ineffective in this game. Mooney roasted him."

I'm not suggesting Iverson is any good, but Mooney didn't get his 15+ rebounds and I would presume our team rebounds would be a lot less vs NZ, this leads to less scoring opportunities. On top of the that the defensive intimidation also leads to less easy inside buckets etc. Mooney will always get his, but not at the level he does against other teams that aren't as big.

Iverson was far from ineffective.
8 points 5 rebounds (3 offensive) and a block isn't bad, not his best numbers but still a decent days work especially against the mobility of Mooney.

They were going to allow 75% capacity at the derby yesterday, until the outbreak Saturday night. It's generally a week of restrictions before it eases off, we just happen to have had two cases a week apart that have pushed the timeline out a bit.

It's always an interesting decision to go from 75% with masks immediately to zero crowd for an outdoor even. Even allowing crowds prior to the Brisbane game leading into a midnight lockdown was also an interesting decision.
