NBL1 Central Week 1 Preview

Will do my best though I admit I don't know much more than what clubs have been posted and what I have heard around the traps. A few things have come out since the power rankings so these will reflect the best info I have. Of course, would love to see more predictions here too from those who know better.

Forestville vs Mavs

The less said the better. I haven't seen anything yet to indicate Mavs will be competitive, though they do have a sharp coach he might be working with blunt objects. Forestville may have less depth that previous years but it won't matter here.

Eagles by 18.

South vs North

Looks like both of these teams will be 2nd half of the season types with their NBL recruits. South have the clear advantage in this matchup early in the season with Starling still MVP calibre and Johns still the best guard on court.

South by 12.

Southern vs Sturt

I have these two either side of making the finals and for a round 1 matchup this could have some very long term implications. Southern have two imports and we already know Koop will be a handful in this league. Sturt seem to be running all Australian and while they have COTY favourite (just ahead of Rojo) Paul Rigoni and will be very structured they will fall short in this one.

Southern by 8.

West vs Centrals

A lot of unknowns here as I don't know a lot about the Centrals lineup, however West have some big name signings and a great coach. Will take a bit of beating in this one.

West by 14.

Norwood vs Woodville

Two teams I have firmly in the finals in what is the game of the round. Norwood have just announced a new import big and we know Woodville have a fringe NBA player coming in, hopefully both clear quarantine and are able to play week 1. Both teams have veteran experience and star power. Turnage is good, but this Jacobs guy will be better.

Woodville by 4.

Clearly a Rojo fan, probably going winless ain't going to get COTY. Forestville should get this one by 40.
South may be waiting for inexperienced duo of Hulland and Mudronja, have Starling but also the Mr Bean of coaches who can totally stuff it all up. McVeigh a proven scorer in league will be needed for north to have a chance to make finals, Jimma an interesting pickup for Rockets, picking them purely because of coaching.
Rigoni junior probably more important in than dad, although he could come close to COTY if he can get kids competitive. Southern with some low key pickups plus imports might give them edge.
If Humphries doesn't suit up for Lions, could be very ugly and long season way up north. Interesting to see how Ross adapts and copes with Corey's aggressive style. West by lots.
A lot of talk about this ex NBA player suiting up in little old Adelaide. If he's that good, why? Whitmore seat would be very warm if he can't produce with this lot. Norwood looks like they finally will play players not from the Webber family tree, one due to injury, but wouldn't surprise me if he complains to board and still starts and just stands in corner on offence. Turnage a proven player as long as his mates don't have a wedding overseas, Covid takes away that possibility unless it's in New Zealand. Flames for me.

Well, unless Scotty is pulling a Henry and Paul scenario, Jacobs only scored 2 points in a loss to Sturt last night in reserves. Anyone have news on that.

I'm sure Jacobs is just finding his feet after getting out of quarantine - not easy coming straight out of 14 day lockdown.

What will be interesting to see is how the reffing will be for NBL1 - hope it's better than what we get in reserves.

The big question is NBL1 going to allow Southern to continue their side show bob show. What a joke. Playing music while the ball is in play like it's an NBL/NBA game. Firstly NBL1 don't have the rights to stream the music during the game as they don't have permission. Southern trying too hard to be the show ponies, but I guess the men's team didn't live up to their expectations.

By the way Centrals looked - predictions for wooden spoon is Mavs or Tigers....toss a coin!

Was at st calir for r1 ,Not sure what norwood have to come back( if anything)?
They looked ordinary, if wasnt for Turnage they lose that game by 30+.
And gonna be a mistake to sleep on Jacobs, showed more than enough that when he finds his feet and settles probably goes to a level.above anyone else in the league imo. Small sample size i know but i don't thinks his numbers even nearly show what this guy will do.
Missed some mid range jumpers that go down more often than not in a couple.of weeks. Didn't really beat anyone off the dribble either, have a hunch that changes too. Looking fwd to see if he turns out to be a flop like some have suggested( paraphrasing ) or he is legit like i have an inkling he might be.

CJ is the only one that turned it up in the 1st half of the game. Then he went cold the 2nd half. No depth to the Norwood team especially off the bench. If Warriors really put the heat on they would of beat them easy by 20-30 points.

At least they still have their towel swinger on the bench.

Commentary across the board will get better as the season settles, tech bugs are ironed out and what to many are new teams are seen by the callers a few times.

I for one found calling Rd 1 a real learning experience, not having any stats for the Men's game was was like commentating with one eye closed. But now I know where info is and have some games to work off I can't wait to be unleashed for Round 3.

PS - There are many clubs who would welcome a volunteer to step up and help in an "experts" role when they host games. Last Saturday Night one commentator had to go solo all match as the club volunteer never materialised. Another literally pulled a fan (all be it an ex player coach) out of his seat without warning five minutes before. So if you think you can talk the talk on air, contact your local club and join us! Cheers Marty.

Interested in the altercation at the Mavs game. Starling was ejected. Will he go to tribunal and get suspension for striking another player? Will this set a presidence for the rest of the season? I'm assuming BSA will sweep this under the rug.

Curious - so on the NBL1 website - why do they use pictures of NBL players instead of using NBL1 players. NBL1 Centrals have 6ers & Lightning and I would understand if they played in the league but Drmic is long gone.

But then again if you want pictures of NBL1 players the first one they'd use is Harris or Mays - this is just a sXXt fest show. I think there is some kind of monetary kiss up going on there.
