Griffin agrees to buy-out with Pistons, may head to Nets

ESPN:

Finding a trade for Griffin -- who was owed a remaining $36.6 million this season and $39 million in 2021-22 prior to the buyout -- was an insurmountable challenge for the Pistons. Detroit finalized a reduction in his remaining salary to gain free agency with Griffin's agent, Sam Goldfeder of Excel Sports, since the sides mutually agreed he would leave the active roster on Feb. 15 awaiting a trade or buyout.
The Brooklyn Nets, Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers are expected to be among the teams Griffin will be considering for his next stop, sources tell ESPN.
Shams:
The Brooklyn Nets are believed to be leaders to sign six-time All-Star Blake Griffin, sources tell me and @JLEdwardsIII . Rival teams with interest are expecting Griffin to choose Nets as a title favorite for chance to win a championship.

Guy is just an average player at best these days. Injuries have taken their toll

So how does this actually work?

he was owed 76M by Detroit, so they have agreed to a lesser figure as a lump sum to get rid of him. And then they can move on without his salary or buyout figure on their cap and therefore fit more people in? or is it more complex than that?

so assuming he was a nice guy and say accepted 40M payout, they feel that that is a good investment just to get rid of him!!

If he was owed say $58m over the next 1.5 years he may have given them back say $10m knowing he was likely going to be spending the next 1.5 years sitting.

Yes its a win/win for both.

Detroit get to focus on development, free up Cap, save a bit of money.

Griffin loses a bit of money but can find a place where he can get closer to a ring, goes to a team that wants him for the right price (which is more possible now that Griffin has already come pre-paid).

It's amazing how losing now has almost as much of an art to it as winning.

It's now been reported that Griffin is supposedly giving up $13.3M in this buyout which is the 7th largest amount given up in NBA history:

1. Bison Dele - $31M
2. Larry Sanders - $21.9M
3. Derek Fisher - $20.6M
4. Shawn Kemp - $18.7M
5. Deron Williams - $16M
6. Vin Baker - $15.8M

Unfortunately didn't help Bison much, RIP.

Griffin turns 32 next week. Not old.

Is it just injuries? Or unhappy in Detroit?

Can he get his body right and return to old form? Was all NBA 3rd in 2018-19.

If he goes to Brooklyn, that's just ridiculous. I'm sick of super teams. Even if he's not what he used to be, Brooklyn just shouldn't be allowed to sign him. NBA needs more equalization.

Nets still less of a super team than Melbourne United

He is indeed going to Brooklyn. They plan to use him as a small-ball centre off the bench.

Free agent forward Blake Griffin has agreed to a deal with the Brooklyn Nets for the rest of the season, his agent Sam Goldfeder of @excelbasketball tells ESPN.

Will be interesting to see how much of his having faded at Detroit was a loss of athleticism and how much was not wanting to destroy his body for the sake of a tanking franchise.

He's going from the bottom team in the East to (just about) the top team.

The Pistons still have his salary against their cap.
So unless they stretch his last year over 3 years he still counts as $30mil next season. If they stretch his salary he counts as $10mil over 3 years
