The NBL statement itself:

The NBL is aware of a social media post shared by the NBL Store today.

The NBL Store is managed independently of the NBL and its social media accounts managed by an external marketing agency. The post was not submitted to the NBL for approval prior to publication and was not authorised or approved by the NBL and has since been removed.

NBL Commissioner Jeremy Loeliger said: "The post was in extremely poor taste and demonstrated a complete lack of judgement by the NBL Store's external marketing agency. The NBL has zero tolerance in respect of such matters and the contract with the third party agency has been terminated with immediate effect.

“As we have repeatedly stated, we take the issue of player safety very seriously and the NBL is working closely with the Australian Basketball Players’ Association, our clubs and venues to maintain the highest standards of court maintenance."

Looks like this was it - a joke about sponsor decals being a banana peel.

Haha, that's awesome. The company deserves a raise not termination.

Andrew Bogut on Twitter today claiming clubs and players have been warned not to speak about decals or risk being fined. Pretty difficult not to believe that would be the case now.

It's not like having decals is new so why is it controversial now and not before? This isn’t special to NBL or Australia.

Is it sheer excess of decals?

Fining players for talking about the decal issue is a slippery slope.

A player talking about a serious safety issue is not bringing the game into disrepute, but league itself having an unsafe work environment is.

Bogut was seriously good player and made millions and is allowed an opinion, I'm certain the players battling for a living are happy enough playing on decals as it helps pay their wage. Obviously we don’t want anybody hurt but could the shoes not be as good as yesteryear.

Something must have changed. Advertising decals have been on the courts since what, the 80s?

Felix Von Hofe raised a good point today. The bulk of the whingeing is coming from the same place it always does - Sydney. The slipperiness of the decals might be an issue but it has been blown out of proportion by the usual suspects, Bogut and Smith.

And of course the point FVH made went right over Bogut's head.

Yes decals have been on the floors for years, why slip now, look at the shoes.

Good to see Van Hofe post on the hoops forum for his failing sportsbet funded podcast.

I guess a solid gig for a failed bball player! Cant hate too much

I have seen plenty of decals placed on NBL floors. Find the right business to make and lay the decals and you are fine. A dodgy one initially can be fixed by spraying the decal with hairspray. Shoes... yeah/nah.

36ers import John Gilchrist ruptured his ACL slipping on a decal in Melbourne back in 2010 I think it was, so probably makes sense that there's concern around it.

Not for Van Hofe! His bball career looked like he had no ACLS!
