NBL Cup in trouble

With Victoria making Covid outbreaks a fortnightly celebration, wondering if non-vic teams are asking questions on whether it should happen?

That is why it is a Hub.

lol As if a Hub is going to make a difference.

Will be lucky to get many fans let alone teams being able to play unless its played in Bendigo.

Except teams going in there may need to then quarantine for 14 days when leaving the hub. Would be smarter to move the two teams out of Victoria

States are closing the border to Vic at the moment so Queensland and NSW teams and 36ers may not be able to get in to hub. Then there will be a 2 week league shut down at the end of it.

If they cant have fans so be it. They will want to get these 36 games completed. The Hub goes for 26 days. All things being equal at some stage during that time they will be back to zero transmission and the 14 days will expire. Gotta love Hoops. Always glass empty, not even half full.

But states will want 28 days free of transmission before reopening borders. That's been the standard approach.

Should of been in Tassie to help promote Jack Jumpers not Vic, LK home cooking getting is team a bonus 7 home games.

Gee.... that's actually a very good idea. With the Jack Jumpers hopping into the League next season, having the cup down there would certainly stir up interest

Lockdown is until Wednesday. NBL Cup starts Saturday. Given there are no unlinked cases, the lockdown is simply a precautionary measure (a lazy one at that) and the teams should be able to arrive next Friday.

Andrews just said professional sports is a job, and can continue just not as entertainment with crowds.

So games this weekend and the NBL cup could go ahead just with no crowds.

The NBL Cup is in Victoria because the Victorian Govt. provided a large $ incentive to the NBL including the prize money and covering some of the costs. If another state wants it maybe that Govt can open their wallets...

It's almost like building a month-long inflexible block into a season that needed a lot of flexibility was a bad idea.

There is no statement from the NBL website about any postponement.

A decision on the SEM v PER game to be made tomorrow.

Not sure why they didn't just can the SEM game now... Unless they think they can still play it.

FROM MELB UNITED

Following the announcement of a five-day lockdown in Victoria, the NBL has announced that tomorrow's game between Melbourne United and the Cairns Taipans at Bendigo Stadium has been postponed.
Details of the rescheduled event will be communicated once released by the NBL.
More info regarding tickets to this game will be communicated in due course. Until then, ticket holders may request a refund via the Ticketek website if they wish.

The Melbourne game could have been postponed because of it being in Bendigo... NBL might not be willing to travel during the lockdown.

Could also be why the SEM v PER game hasn't been canned yet, being that game is in the city.

Yet again another furphy. The whole of Victoria is under the same rules currently.

NBL games can be played in Victoria this weekend as pro sport can go ahead.
The NBL and the teams can choose to postpone the games though. They need ticket revenue + it makes sense for a team like Cairns to stay out of Victoria for now if they can.
For obvious reasons, the tennis will not postpone and will play with no crowd.

"The Melbourne game could have been postponed because of it being in Bendigo... NBL might not be willing to travel during the lockdown."

I understand the City of Bendigo have paid for the right to host the game, and they receive a $$ return via people traveling to the game and spending in town. That's why it will be rescheduled.

NSW lockdown trouble spots and contacts in the background while the rest of the state is close to normal, scaring the shit out of the rest of the country.
QLD and WA lockdown their cities off 1 or 2 people with a scary variant.
SA lockdown when they think someone got it off a pizza box after trying to do a NSW approach.

I always LOL whenever someone mentions moving the hub to WA. The only advantage Perf has is that they have more titles than any other team.

It is a logistical nightmare to move everyone there, the WA Government didn't want to fund any of it like VIC does and the time difference will make Eastern States stay up until all hours of the night just to watch their team(s). NZ is a good 5 hours in front. Good luck with that!

Perhaps people suggest Perth because there are 14,000 wildcats members (that's another advantage btw) that want to watch games?

When people suggest perth i think they realise that it won't/can't happen because of the reasons you say #240, but we are used to it. We've had Scorchers and Glory GFs moved to Canberra and Sydney at the last minute because of 'time difference issues' despite earning the home ground advantage. Perth also was not considered for a cricket test match this year despite having a new stadium and the highest possible attendance, cricket Australia stuck with tradition over safety. Not to mention bands bypassing Perth on world tours .

People also get that the Vic government handed over a lot of cash for the cup, but until their covid containment sorted it can't stay in Melbourne and Perth people would at least like to be considered for once.

WA government is too strict for sports league to organise anything there. Even the AFL struggled and that's with teams playing only 1 game a week, so quarantine and travel restrictions are less of an issue than for BBL or NBL.
I don’t think it’s the Eastern states mistreating WA, more the opposite in fact: WA choosing to reap the benefits of isolation by restricting travel from the Eastern states. Seems to have worked well for WA, but you get less live sport.

I doubt there is a delay, it's a hub set up. It will just be a case of whether crowds are allowed and how many.

Doesn't really belong here but not worth its own thread and is about the NBL Cup.

Just watching a game and would like to see a graphic for NBL Cup points, live, say at each break.

With 7 points up each game, NBL CUP ladder can change quarter x quarter.

Also be interesting how the reg NBL ladder changes as the W/L's are taken into account.
