Dellavedova's situation?

I believe he hasn't played one game this season due to concussion.

Must be quite serious?

A lot players in that squad have missed a large chuck of playing games.

Is it possibly related to the rotation? They look to have a couple of good PG options. Early days, but they're in the eight, so not a year to tank?

I thought he may have played some early on but yes it appears he's been out for around 2 months now, hopefully he gets better soon

I thought he was maybe just out of the rotation too Isaac but after googling he is definitely still out indefinitely with concussion sustained in preseason. Sounds bad.

Or they're just saying it’s concussion to use the injury clauses to play someone better

Yeah maybe that is correct Hoopie, and Delly (as such a great team player) has agreed to being involved in the article that came out today where he says he is considering retirement - all just to help the Cavs put a better player on court instead of him. F-wit.

Thanks, Anon 880. I take it back - didn't realise it was anywhere near this bad.

Anon 879, it’s been done many times in the NBA

"Or they're just saying it's concussion to use the injury clauses to play someone better"

They wouldn't need to make up an injury to play someone else.

Delly is a bench player even when healthy. There are plenty of guys who don't play who get whats called DNP - Coach's Decision.

But if he is medically retired due to concussion he can't play again anywhere right? Olympics and NBL included?? Or is it like the situation a few years back with Isaiah Austin and the heart problem that prevented him being drafted? Yet he continues to play in Asia or wherever.

Like Longley when he retired to take his pay from his contract had to stop playing everywhere or give up the money.

I'd assume he can still play NBL even with medically retiring

Longley's situation was a bit different where he retired with a few years and a fair bit of money left on his contract, that shouldn’t matter for Delly as he just has a contract for this year. Cavs would basically just cut and payout his contract instead of forcing him to officially medically retire.

If he has a concussion that's bad enough to prevent him playing in the NBA, how exactly do you propose he plays in the NBL?

Matthew Dellavedova, 30, a fan favorite in Cleveland for the blatant disregard he showed for his own body on the court, has not played this season due to a serious concussion suffered on Dec. 12, opening night in the preseason. Nearly two months later, Dellavedova is still experiencing problematic symptoms that are preventing him from ramping up workouts in any real capacity, several sources told The Athletic.

Those sources indicated that retirement was on the table, if not likely, for Dellavedova, though a source close to him said there "isn't anything conclusive" about his playing future, he’s under no deadline or pressure to formally quit, and doesn’t want to stop playing yet.

He wouldn't be able to play anywhere again without repaying the money. In saying that there is absolutely no incentive for him to take a medical retirement as he will be a FA at the end of the season anyway, the only incentive would be for the Cavs as his contract for the rest of the season would be paid by their insurance company rather than themselves.

Longley's situation was very different when he retired after his first year with the Knicks, he still had 3 years remaining on his contract at about $6m a year so there was plenty of incentive for him (still got all his money) and for the Knicks (their insurance company had to pay the rest of his contract).

Part of the conditions of taking a medical retirement in the NBA is that you can't every play pro ball again and if you do you have to repay all the money the insurance company paid you.

Fan favorite G Matthew Dellavedova, who hasn't played this season because of a severe concussion, went on Twitter to dismiss a report he's considering retirement. He called it a "temporary setback" and said his "only focus is getting healthy and back with the boys to help make a playoff push."
