Did Gleeson?

And don't sell me the "look at his success with the Wildcats" BS! He inherited that team.

And he still coached them to five titles. You don't do that unless you're a good coach, no matter how good the team is.

Good appointment. Has American connections as well as a good knowledge of the NBL and how it is played.
Will hopefully be able to attract a quality marquee player and good imports.

Neilsen moves on to be a head coach of a G League team, and Forde and Roth move on to become head coaches of NBL teams. Not only does Gleeson get the best out of his players, he also develops his assistants so they can move on to bigger and better things.

It's only the flogs that bag Gleeson, I hoping like hell he doesn’t get the three peat, but his coaching record is second to none in nbl, equaled only by Georgian.

Gleeson can not claim any of those guys, especially Forde who started out with Bevo.

Perfect 'big name' to head up an expansion team. He's an NBA All Star so you know he's gonna be no joke when it comes to coaching. What could go wrong?

Is having a local presence as part of coaching staff that important to locals, not only just in Tassies case. Local players definitely give the community something to be proud about, but you'd want the best coaching staff no matter where they're from.

Reply #826842 | Report this post

The astute Coach Roth pointed out that the Phoenix lost 17 of their last 19 games. No one here ever pointed that out to my knowledge. With the cattle they didn't have and probably don't have this season they will probably be cellar dwellers again. Cya Simon. Roth faces the same challenge.
Unless Roth invests in getting to know the community and engages immediately that is more important IMO than the locals playing. Stewie I would guess has enough on his plate to not get involved. Successful in private enterprise and equally successful with the Chargers.
Roth needs to pick his assistants carefully and I know of no one locally that is worthy of replacing Stewart.

Enjoying the team coming together, reckon they had a crack at someone like Phil Handy and ended up with Roth who does seem to have extensive experience.

Don't know him or how he operates, getting the franchise together is a huge challenges. Hope his connections and skills are enough to bring it all together. The NBL is a damn tough league.

Exciting times down here in Tassie.

Roth
Stewart
AC?

Dellavedova/Gibson(obvious choices)
(i)/Antonio/Hadley(college kids)
(i)/Grida(leaves Hawks)
Kay/Moller(Kyei new backup Sydney behind cooks)
(i)/Ogilvy(will be cut to make way for Mathiang imo)

#143 Is that because he didn't want role or wasn't considered?

Roth is the choice that Brookhouse etc have made, I am intrigued as I don't know what his strengths and weaknesses are ie:

X and O's, game day strategy

Recruitment

Leadership

Attention to detail and temperament etc.

As well as being a being a game day coach Roth will also be partly responsible for establishing a new franchise, recruitment, development of values and assisting with bringing bball together in Tas. All of this will not only be his role so the people around him that he puts in place along with Brookhouse etc are essential.

I have been impressed when he has been interviewed and how he speaks but as I said I do not know a lot about him, who he is and what he actually did in previous roles.

It's simple. He needs to win games. Period.

Yes, sure, if you appoint a local coach, and hire local players, everyone gets the warm fuzzies. But it doesn't last.

Also keep in mind that their continued operation depends on government funding, sponsorship, and ticket sales. Long term that will depend on success.

Having your "own team" is only a god thing if that team is not an embarrassment.

Oh, and at the risk of further derailing the thread...
I think what we can say about Gleeson, is that he hires good people and gives them opportunity.
Roth was already highly experienced and qualified, that's why Gleeson hired him. Really all his time at the Cats has given him is exposure to and experience with our league
