Did he achieve and coaching accolades before getting to to Perth?
#762
Did Gleeson?
And don't sell me the "look at his success with the Wildcats" BS! He inherited that team.
And he still coached them to five titles. You don't do that unless you're a good coach, no matter how good the team is.
Good appointment. Has American connections as well as a good knowledge of the NBL and how it is played.
Will hopefully be able to attract a quality marquee player and good imports.
Congratulations Anthony Stewart.....Oh wait.....sorry
The league keeps poaching current and former Wildcats coaches. And yet Gleeson can never seem to win Coach of the year....
Got talked up by wildcats players, this is a good appointment. I can see Stewart being the assistant for the haters of him.

Dean Demopoulos should have been signed jokes.
Good signing
Neilsen moves on to be a head coach of a G League team, and Forde and Roth move on to become head coaches of NBL teams. Not only does Gleeson get the best out of his players, he also develops his assistants so they can move on to bigger and better things.
It's only the flogs that bag Gleeson, I hoping like hell he doesn’t get the three peat, but his coaching record is second to none in nbl, equaled only by Georgian.
Don't forget the Taipans poaching OLoughlin, the towel guy and I think their sports psych too.
If Weaver stayed Forde would still be an ass coach. Stop drinking the coolaide
Coached g league in America and was assistant at a couple nba clubs good resume

Amongst all the typical shit guessing on here credit where credit is due as there was one poster who said it would be Roth.
Good luck to him. As all coaches know, the clock starts ticking from now.
If weaver stayed Forde would of been the Tasmanian coach.
Gleeson can not claim any of those guys, especially Forde who started out with Bevo.
O'Loughlin was sacked by the Wildcats. Not poached. Big difference
Of course he can claim them. They've all developed into head coaches under his tutelage.
Or you could ask them next time you see them.
Im confident on a few of there answers
Was Mark Price given any consideration?
Perfect 'big name' to head up an expansion team. He's an NBA All Star so you know he's gonna be no joke when it comes to coaching. What could go wrong?

It could work, as long as Heal isn't playing under him.

A good signing- Stewart as assistant would be a good connection for the locals. Roth should have connections too!
Heard only good things and as a local, let's get on with it!
I said it ages ago. The JJ's should be aiming for a finals spot. No one agreed with me then. Listen to what the new head Coach says.

Phoenix aimed as well, very hard on year one team.
Is having a local presence as part of coaching staff that important to locals, not only just in Tassies case. Local players definitely give the community something to be proud about, but you'd want the best coaching staff no matter where they're from.
The astute Coach Roth pointed out that the Phoenix lost 17 of their last 19 games. No one here ever pointed that out to my knowledge. With the cattle they didn't have and probably don't have this season they will probably be cellar dwellers again. Cya Simon. Roth faces the same challenge.
Unless Roth invests in getting to know the community and engages immediately that is more important IMO than the locals playing. Stewie I would guess has enough on his plate to not get involved. Successful in private enterprise and equally successful with the Chargers.
Roth needs to pick his assistants carefully and I know of no one locally that is worthy of replacing Stewart.
Stewart will be an assistant if he's available. He is Mr basketball Tasmania.

Sounds like a good appointment by Tassie. Will be interesting to see who he recruits as players?
Of course it will be. If he is as connected as he supposedly is they should secure the best imports and NS of all the NBL teams.

Enjoying the team coming together, reckon they had a crack at someone like Phil Handy and ended up with Roth who does seem to have extensive experience.
Don't know him or how he operates, getting the franchise together is a huge challenges. Hope his connections and skills are enough to bring it all together. The NBL is a damn tough league.
Exciting times down here in Tassie.
Tasmania Jackjumpers
Roth
Stewart
AC?
Dellavedova/Gibson(obvious choices)
(i)/Antonio/Hadley(college kids)
(i)/Grida(leaves Hawks)
Kay/Moller(Kyei new backup Sydney behind cooks)
(i)/Ogilvy(will be cut to make way for Mathiang imo)
Handy is a skills coach and excellent at that. As to his actual coaching a team, that's a question mark. And why would he leave an excellent position to go to Tasmania?
I love how people keep fantasizing about Dellavedova, Kay and Antonio in each team unless it is the same anon.

#114........smart arse post, my point was reckon he was approached and you can not blame the Jackjumpers for doing so.
I do not know a lot about Roth - hope he is a great coach

#143 Is that because he didn't want role or wasn't considered?
Roth is the choice that Brookhouse etc have made, I am intrigued as I don't know what his strengths and weaknesses are ie:
X and O's, game day strategy
Recruitment
Leadership
Attention to detail and temperament etc.
As well as being a being a game day coach Roth will also be partly responsible for establishing a new franchise, recruitment, development of values and assisting with bringing bball together in Tas. All of this will not only be his role so the people around him that he puts in place along with Brookhouse etc are essential.
I have been impressed when he has been interviewed and how he speaks but as I said I do not know a lot about him, who he is and what he actually did in previous roles.
Go to the Wildcats website Scout. His full resume is there and far better than what The mercury wrote re his CV.

It's simple. He needs to win games. Period.
Yes, sure, if you appoint a local coach, and hire local players, everyone gets the warm fuzzies. But it doesn't last.
Also keep in mind that their continued operation depends on government funding, sponsorship, and ticket sales. Long term that will depend on success.
Having your "own team" is only a god thing if that team is not an embarrassment.

Oh, and at the risk of further derailing the thread...
I think what we can say about Gleeson, is that he hires good people and gives them opportunity.
Roth was already highly experienced and qualified, that's why Gleeson hired him. Really all his time at the Cats has given him is exposure to and experience with our league
"Handy wasn't interviewed"
His family situation meant he had to withdraw from the process. After that the JJs asked for expressions of interest.

Bit of inside knowledge #298!
While Roth's resume looks impressive re roles / where he has coached still interested on how will coach.
"Bit of inside knowledge #298!"
No it was relatively common knowledge and I for one wasn't going to mention it.

#355 - are you here to score cheap points?. When I said process I meant I had no knowledge of how involved in interview / recruitment process and when he withdrew re family issues, heard his name mentioned here but not the other stuff.
Do you have any info on what type of coach Roth is or just on here to have a go at others?

Oh - apologies from me as well #357 ....I'm easily confused with all the anons
Cheers

Besides this:
His family situation meant he had to withdraw from the process. After that the JJs asked for expressions of interest.
Yep as I said the reason hasn't been mentioned.
So stop alluding to it then. No one cares that you think you know.
Caporn was mentioned a bit but for numerous jobs but it's either BS or he misses out.
Stop the harassment who ever you are. No one cares what yet another anonymous thinks. Perhaps use your real nick.
