Spouse elected to Association Board

Noticed on the North Sydney website that Renae Garlep gets elected to the Board and her husband Tom is an employee of the Association.

Not saying there would but some may think there could be a conflict of interest when it comes to some decisions that may arise with Tom as an employee.

Does Renae have to obstain from voting as there could be considered favortism.

Why with Renae and Tom working at the same Basketball Association, there's no one to stop them from taking over the planet.

Why wasn't the UN there to veto the appointment?

How lucky they are to have two ex Elite athletes giving back at their club. If only more clubs were as lucky to have people such as Tom and Renee volunteering.

Out in the open unlike a lot of political "couples". And who's to say she'll necessarily vote in his favour. What happens if they split, she has to resign.
I bet this topic doesn't get shut down like the interesting ones like Adam Todd's sacking. Funny how Liam Flynn advertises his camps on this forum???

Cat,
A lot of clubs with conflict of interest make it hard to 'step up'.
Protect their own family members so their incompetence is not exposed.

If you've been involved with amateur/junior sport at an administrative level, you'd note that family involvement and the POTENTIAL for "Conflict of Interest" is common. Often it will be multi-generational. At a minimum you get teams and clubs run by parents.

And the irony is that with a couple, it's obvious and out in the open for everyone to see. By far a bigger issue is Cronyism, with people stacking committees with their mates. People who claim to be impartial and independent, but always vote to support said mate.

And at the end of the day, I've been involved with a few clubs that always struggled to fill their committees. So all you had to do was nominate to get elected. That, and AGMs where, out of 3,000 people eligible to vote, only 30 show up. So if other people can't be bothered to give their time, then they don't have much of a basis to criticise those that do.
