2021 Boomers Squad

Time to start getting the list ready. What are people's thoughts on the Boomer’s lineup.

I’ve got a 12 man squad of:

Mills
Exum
Delly
Ingles
Simmons
Baynes
Thybulle
Broekhoff
Green
Maker
Bolden
Landale

I'd be putting Kay and Bogut (if keen and has the faintest step available) in over Bolden/Maker.

Thybulle technically isn't a Boomer - he can be obviously, but I don't think we can assume it.

Not sure about Exum.

Simmons / Dellavedova
Mills / Cotton / Thybulle
Ingles / Broekhoff
Landale / Maker / Bolden
Baynes / Bogut

Reserves
Exum - would need great season
Goulding - would need to outperform cotton
Green - maybe too early
Adel - would have to shoot at a high clip
Kay - maybe lack of athleticism and passing ability. Tough call for sure,
Magnay - maybe too early

Who is exum playing for?

I wouldn't put Exum in any serious Boomers team he wouldn't even be a star player in the NBL.

I wouldn't put Simmons in.

These lists are going to be an exercise in futility because of the ways that the NBA will impact the Olympics, seeing that the end their finals literally the day before Olympics start.

If athletes are expected to undergo two-weeks quarantine, you can count out everyone who played in the finals series. Then you need to have some time with the team, so you can almost count out anyone who played the conference finals.. with maybe a few exceptions. The best bet for us is if athletes need only get tested on arrival and don't need quarantine, that would give players from the conference finals two weeks to quickly acclimatize themselves to the Boomers setting.

For me, the Boomers two most important players are Aron Baynes and Patty Mills. You can replace everyone else to some extent, but those are the guys whose roles and abilities have no equivalent in our depth charts. Lose either of them and it's lights out for me.

So what are the Raptors and Spurs chances for the coming season? That's going to be super important.

Others might say Simmons, but he's never really played for the team so I make no assumption he will now. If 76ers go late into the finals, kiss Broekhoff and Thybulle goodbye as well.

The squad is probably going to be an extended squad to accommodate all of the unknowns. The Boomers are lucky, though, in that they're not starving for depth.

Ben Simmons
Patty Mills
Joe Ingles
Jock Landale
Aron Baynes
Matthew Dellavedova
Dante Exum
Bryce Cotton
Mattise Thybulle
Ryan Broekhoff
Chris Goulding
Mitch Creek
Deng Adel
Thon Maker
Nick Kay
Andrew Bogut
Isaac Humphries
Jonah Bolden
Mangok Mathiang
Brock Motum
Nathan Sobey
Josh Green
Will Magnay

That's 22 players that could easily come into an Olympic team and play an important role.

If you're really hard up you might pepper in the next tier of players in postions 8-12 on the team and hope you never have to rely on them, including.

Kouat Noi
Josh Giddey
William McDowell-White
Josh White
Angus Brandt
Brad Newley
Mitch McCarron
Cam Gliddon (gulp)
Jason Cadee (best of a bad situation at point guard)
Todd Blanchfield
Mitch Norton

Luckily we'd have to fall pretty far and I think it's unlikely we look at any of those guys all that deeply when the time comes. But the point is, moreso, that we should have an extremely strong Boomers squad no matter how the finals shake up.

I like the list from Anon #p822485. His list;
Simmons / Dellavedova
Mills / Cotton / Thybulle
Ingles / Broekhoff
Landale / Maker / Bolden
Baynes / Bogut
Bogut is always a worry (for me) on both stamina (age) and injuries (history). Love him in there though. However, with Simmons in as a PG, easy to play him as a 4, then Landale, Maker and Bolden can easily cover if....

On paper, that line-up would be rated as 2 overall. I can only see the USA having a better depth and, of course, that depends on the NBA finals for both. More so for them than us as you (I) expect the best players to be involved in finals will be predominantly Americans. Other nations may have, will have, better players in some positions but no-else will be able to match our depth. Remember, that at the WC's, a lesser Boomers outfit only just missed out on medalling, some think Gold, cos key players were exhausted at the pointy end. Lose some-one or 2 or 3 of these guys above and there is plenty of incredible talent sitting on the sidelines with "kick-it-to-me" hopes ready.
Lose any during the Games, injury, foul trouble, etc., and we can cover with the versatility above.

As for the bunch who will miss out, not just on the Games but also our best ever chance of medalling for the fist time (in mens, thanks women), silly of you to be this good right now!

People need to get off Kouat Noi's tip. The dude is terrible. Hyped up the NBA talk and was clearly a who is that guy on the list?

No way a future Boomer.

Didn't NIck Kay have a good last world championships? Sometimes teams just need a hard worker or two. And before others comment, I've never met the guy, don't like Perth and aren't making money off this post.

I forgot Duop Reath and Xavier Cooks in my first squad so you literally have 24 players - 2 Boomers teams - in your first tier. We're looking pretty healthy.

If you don't have Green in the squad then you’re doing it wrong

Reath is warming the bench in Serbia, ABA competitions, Cook was a major disappointment for the kings. Do you follow the basketball or just the headline grabbers. Hopefully the selectors are going to see how season plays out here and elsewhere and don't let media choose team.

How was Xavier Cooks a disappointment? He was doing what he was expected to do on a team that already had multiple scoring options. He would play a similar role on the Boomers.

Without Simmons

Dellavedova, Exum
Mills, Cotton, Green
Ingles, Broekhoff
Landale, Maker, Kay
Baynes, Bogut

If Simmons is in then Exum is out.
Not convinced about Bogut which opens the door for someone like Magnay.
People forget Ingles can also be a ball handler.

Reserves
Creek
Thybulle
Adel
Bolden
Magnay.

"Anyone know if Mojave Ķing will be a future Boomer or a Tall Black?'

He's said he wants to play for Australia even though his father is in the NZ coaching team.

"NBA playoffs will affect many above.
Cadee keep training we may need you."

I've just outlined 24 players the Boomers can call in before you even need to look at a Cadee.

Chances of so many Aussies going so deep in the playoffs is fairly minimal.

It will be a Kardashian or some other reason.

Kings went from 11 and 1 to 8 and 6 when Cooks replace Moller. He got dropped from starting line up because he couldn't play the three spot and wasn’t going to take Tate’s place and his finals performance was tragic. I will wait till seasons end to make an assessment, yes he gets rebounds by staying under the basket and leaving his defence to others, ask Kay, he enjoyed it.

Green plays! He's a long term prospect, similar to Mills in Athens. Assuming absolutely every Australian (or soon to be Aussie) put their hand up, i'd love to see:

C: Baynes / Bogut
PF: Landale / Maker
SF: Ingles / Thybulle / Broekhoff
SG: Mills / Cotton / Green
PG: Simmons / Delly

-Exum: Bigger upside than Delly, one good season and he's in (unlikely tbh)
-Kay: First inclusion if a tall goes down.

-Mathiang - Backup C/PF
-Adel - Backup SF
-Goulding - Backup SG/PG

On the day Bogut has retired we must take him off the lists.
FWIW I would have had him in my 2021 team.

Has been discussed many times but let's assume for the sake of argument all NBA players make themselves available.
Let's also assume Cotton will be a citizen in time.

Simmons, Dellavedova
Mills, Cotton, Green
Ingles, ?
Landale, ?
Baynes, ?

Exum and to a lesser extent Goulding could challenge for guard spots dependent on injuries or availability.

The reserve front court spots are an open race right now

Thybulle, Adel, Broekhoff and Creek for SF
Kay, Bolden, T Maker, Magnay and Motum would all be considered for power forward and centre spots.

If we include Cotton as an Aussie (hopefully), I would (hopefully) include Bogues as a change-of-mind-er, just in time for selection. He'll get the gig, if he puts his hand up, and I don't think he'll put his hand up if he isn't ready. I've got him in.
