Cotter named Assistant at Chicago Bulls

Awesome news.
I think the Sydney stint has give him a bad wrap locally. Just goes to show how much a bad setup behind scenes can really affect on court, and sometimes our views of coaches are pretty skewed based upon what we see. Guy has Cleary put in the work over the years and looking at the levels he's coached over the journey, he is definitely underrated back here.

Yes once again the NBL shows that it doesn't recognise talent. Well done FC. It just shows you never give up and keep working hard. Great guy too.

Well done to him, obviously has great persistence, but his time in Sydney was laughable.

Some people are born head coaches and others are born assistant coaches.

How dare the other clubs outperform Sydney during Cotter's stint as HC. Just appreciate Cotter's talent and let him out-coach you all. Shame! SHAME!

Weren't Sydney on track to make the playoffs when Childress went down for the season?

Cotter didn't have a stellar record during his tenure, but I thought he deserved a bit more time.

Furthermore they replaced him with Connelly which was even worse.

Sydney were last and finished last and Childress played all season.

Fake news: Sydney were last and finished last

Actual news: Sydney did not finish last and were never in last place that season.

Fake news: Childress played all season.

Actual news: Childress played 18 of the 28 games, the Kings 9-9 with him playing. When he first injured his hamstring, the Kings were 7-6 and in 5th place.

"[Title] Sydney Kings fire head coach Damian Cotter after losing 16 of past 19 NBL games

...The Kings currently sit at the bottom of the NBL ladder with a 3-9 record, playing much of their season without star import Josh Childress."

All coaches are fired at some stage apart from a very very select few. Even Coach K was very close after his iffy start at Duke.
Well done to him, fantastic achievement. Is this the first time an Australian born coach been hired in an nba assistant role?
We've had Brown and Dunlap as HC and now Weaver as assistant.

In 2014/15 when Cotter coached the full season, they were never in last place and were 7-5 when Childress hurt his hamstring.

I only vaguely remember his bad stint with Sydney but at least he's stuck with it and obviously has since proven some ability. So now we have Will Weaver (not Aussie, but we'll claim him) for Oklahoma assistant spot, Matty Neilson for Austin Spurs and Damien Cotter for Chicago. This has to be the best year yet for Australian coaches in the NBA, bar none. Hopefully more of our guys (or guys we can claim) make that transition

Always challenged you as a player, would piss certain players off but you could never fault his knowledge. Talked so often to young players about the sacrifice it takes to get to the next level. Walks the walk. Well deserved.

Assistant coaches at nba level are mainly specialists in certain areas. Look at Nets currently. D'Antoni will sort the offence (probably already getting a bit excited if rumour comes true and Harden gets traded there) and Stoudamire you would assume will work with bigs. Nash whilst knowing his Xs and O's already said his role will mainly be managing the team and letting assistants do the coaching. Can see him becoming like a Steve Kerr, has the respect and is a great communicator, if he can get Kyrie to buy in he's already a genius.

He's a genius getting there. Sheesh.
