NH: Tasmanian Jack Jumpers

Oops!

Do we have nobody actually from Tasmania on this forum?

I would have thought that somebody might have pointed out that "Jack Jumpers" has been used by Tasmanian Rugby, for two decades apparently.

And last month they registered the Business Name.

Now, a business name is not the be-all of everything. It's not a trade mark, and is much easier to challenge.
And its generally easier to register something similar without infringing.

But, the fact they've been using the name, supposedly since 2000, will give then the upper hand.

And whilst a stoush with Rugby might not perturb LK, its the kind of thing the State Government will try to avoid

I'm Tasmanian (live in South Hobart just up from the Cascade Brewery), and would like to point out the name will be announced tomorrow ie Thursday.

While Rugby Union is not exactly a big sport down here yes it would create a bit of niggle.

Still believe it will be Tridents.

On another topic there was an interview last night on the local new with the new CEO of the club who said they hoped to have the head coach announced by the end of the year - should be interesting who it is.

Will be lots of criticism of the name, but it's really not that bad.

For comparison:
- AFL has the Dockers
- NRL has the Rabbitohs
- A-League has the Roar & Glory
- NCAA has the Zips, Gauchos, Slugs, Vulcans, Gentlemen, Ladies, Mules, Big Green, Geoducks, Moccasins, Jimmies, Cornhuskers, Fighting Pickles, Mean Green, Hustlin Owls, Archormen, Hoyas, Hatters, Shockers, etc, etc, etc.

Probably fits in with the same level of quality as Dockers and Rabbitohs. Give it a season or two and anybody who hated it will be indifferent.

I think Australians are used to repetitive and simple things and anything outside of the traditional scope will automatically meet scorn. I'm surprised they weren't just named "The Wildcats" because we'd run out of other obvious and overused names.

Some people - the Clinton Gardiners of the world - can't get over the fact that they can't just be "The Devils". Well, they can;t.. so deal with it.

I think Jack Jumpers is a perfectly fine name. It's a bit different to what the rest of the league is doing. I like the mascot and I think the video they released today was excellent.

What matters from here on is getting the right coach and a collection of good players and a marketable star.

Be interesting to see if anything comes from the conflict with Tas Rugby...

Otherwise, yes its a weird name, and yes the promo video was amateur, but hey Tasmania has a team (with a name). I hope the people of Tassie get behind them.

I hope they haven't made a mistake. Personally, if I were Tasmanian, I wouldn't be rushing out to buy and wear the merchandise, but that's just me. (It kinda reminds we of the stupid idea of adopting the "Sandgroper" name for WA, I guess I'm just not big on insects.)
But again, hopefully the majority of Tasmanians see it differently.

Who knows, maybe the idea of being "Small but Irritating" appeals?

I won't say "best of luck" but I do honestly hope the people of Tassie get behind their team, and enjoy their NBL.

D2.0, here's the Tasmanian Rugby Union's official response (from a Mercury article posted yesterday):

However despite Tasmania's Rugby Union side being called the Jack Jumpers since 2000, it had not been trademarked.

TRU president Ebony Altimira conceded she was disappointed the association had not been consulted during the NBL naming process, but is hopeful they will still be able to use the nickname.

"Unfortunately we don’t have the naming rights, when they [the NBL] first looked into it they jumped onto it straight away," Altimira said.

“Being the volunteer organisation we are, it was something that was overlooked over the years.

“We have it as a registered business name but hadn’t patented it.

“We were hopeful we might be able to negotiate or discuss with them but haven’t been able to.

“It is disappointing, but we still hope that conversation can be had so we can work out a way to both use the name.”

So the Taipans get called the snakes, the Razorbacks were called the pigs... so does that mean that Jack Jumpers will get affectionately called the ants a lot too?

I can handle the ants moniker a lot more than Jack Jumpers but I just want the team to be a success and help basketball boom in Tasmania.

As for RU having the name, it does leave a bad taste in your mouth that the NBL isn't giving them respect when they already have the name.

I still think Thylacines or Crayfish are better names but alas I think the advertising was cool!
