Hawks to announce Brian Goorjian as coach

Speaking with an extremely close Illawarra source, Matt Flinn is still the coach for the 20/21 NBL Season. This was days before the news that Brain Goorjian was to take over as head coach on Monday (22.6.2020)

At the time of writing this, my source hasn't said anything yet and it's still early enough for news to break but I believe Flinn is still the coach.

Illawarra Mercury:

The new Hawks ownership group is poised to announce its first major coup, with whispers growing louder that six-time championship-winning coach Brian Goorjian is set to join the foundation club.

"Set to join the club"
Doesn't specify his role though!

The same Illawarra Mercury that reported Ball was a done deal.

Flint is gone, been offered some admin role, not certain he'll take it. I’d say a broom is going through the place. If supporters don’t turn up this side will end up being the second Sydney side.

If you are the New Owners of the Hawks, would you retain a coach that took the team to the bottom of the ladder last season?

That was partly responsible for recruiting some of the worst imports in this league's history?

Just do like the United did with the Tigers and get rid of all connections to Illawarra, except for the banner and retired singlets to tease the 16 fans they have.

Ask the Taipans.

Touché Kobe, not to mention the horrendous run of injuries they accumulated. They were never making the playoffs, with the onus clearly on developing young talent even before their run of injuries.

Hate is blindness for some.

The nbl forced Illawarra to take those imports, that's why it took so long to get them. Illawarra wanted to just continue with the young guys and the then owner didn’t want to spend any money so they got those two useless guys. It HAD NOTHING to with coach Flinn.
Kelly was given a second chance, Flinn probably deserves it as well despite all the no all knockers.

So the new 25% ownership group are still dictated to by the NBL.

It was meant to be announced today. 5:30pm and nothing yet. Every year there's a rumour BG is coming back to the NBL and every year it proves to be false news. Wonder if this is the case too?

Ask the Taipans.

The difference in these 2 scenarios is the Taipans didn't go into VA and essentially starting anew, the Hawks are which is normally an impetus for wide ranging changes.

For every Mike Kelley there is a Marty Clarke, Andrew Gaze and Damien Cotter.

No coach in his right mind is going to hand over the keys to a 17/18 year old kid for long, especially if the losses start mounting.

We saw this exact scenario just last season with LaMelo Ball at the Hawks.

Maybe Ball was so high profile that you had to give him minutes and the keys to the offence whether the coach believed in him or not.

The Hawks would like to thank Matt Flinn for his time with the team.

We also like to welcome Brian Goorjian to the team, we really excited to see what this team can achieve with a basketball coach.

What a start to the rebuild Hawks!

Surely this shows they are serious and willing to put the capital in?

Or might it be a situation of over capitalising?

"I know one thing about BG and he he hates the politics that come with the NBL and even more so the Boomers."

Despite him luring players to the Kings with the incentive of being included in the national program? Or when he gave preferential treatment to his Kings players in the Beijing Olympics while leaving better players on the bench?

Cooks opt out of Sydney contract with the new rule over covid 19, which means he can go play somewhere overseas if he chooses. If he stays in the NBL his is still contracted to Sydney for however long his contract was. So Cooks will either play overseas or with Sydney if he stays

Cook could opt out if kings are happy with him going to hawks, or if Cooks goes to kings Moller could also ask for a release and go to hawks.
