Majok Majok Re-Signs With Wildcats

Just seen this in the media. Leaves 4 spots left in the cats squad. Decent backup.

Perth have exercised their option on Jook.

In retrospect, I'm not surprised given the timing. My understanding is that the deadline was this week, which is fair enough, and gives players some certainty.
He had some good games last season, and should be better in his 2nd year. Reasonable, solid bench player, and doesn't mind doing the hard work. He'd be reasonably cheap, and I imagine he's happy at home in Perth.

So that's 6 locked in. 4 spots remaining.

Big Questions Remaining:

1) Will Martin retire?
There was also a short debate on Overtime, regarding Damo.
Santamaria thinks he's gone.
Homicide reckons he'd be keen to go for number 7.

2) Can they get Kay back?

3) Will Cotton naturalise in time?

4) If no to the above, will they chase another Marquee?

Perth will have a good bench with
Norton
Lo Buluk
Steindl
Wagstaff
Majok.
With Travers as DP. Possibly could see Norton starting depending on how final 4 spots are filled.

Majok Majok was nothing special but a decent bench player, getting a few rebounds and put backs here and there.

He had a slightly better year than from NZ, so he would be keen to stay in a good program.

Could he get more minutes if Perth cannot afford a good 5 man?

You mean like the first 2/3 of last season?
It depends on the rest of the line-up. Of recent years, even when we've had a good 5, and solid backup, Trev liked to give Kay minutes there.

That is true but Kay still not confirmed.
All comes down to how those last 4 spots are filled.

Perth finished with a very white starting 5, Cotton was the only non-white.

Re-signing Cotton, who is now almost guaranteed to finish his Career in Perth, is huge.
But yes, some big shoes to fill. Before his injury, White was flying. Kay was good all year, and finished very strong again, and Plumlee was a good addition at the right time.
Still so much to "wait and see", and so much depending on how much money they have to spend.

I'd rather the Kings pick up Mike Dunigan. Is he still around and serviceable??

Perth's bench was better than most Adelaide and Illawarra starting five. Perth and NZ looking great.

I think this signing is pretty massive if you look at it from the perspective that they have a quality player taking his minutes so will Plumlee return or someone else that is potential All-NBL calibre?

Also noteworthy is Rhys Vague seemed to have taken a step forward in his development to start the season but by the end he wasn't getting game time and it looks like he may not get a contract this season with Majok signed now.

Plumlee was underwhelming so perhaps they go in another direction as cost Vs output might not make much sense.

There will be plenty of really cheap guys who can fill that role coming out of the USA this year as the mid/lower end EU market will be weak so good chance we could snag a few really good players on the cheaply.

I think Plumlee did just fine considering he came in with 7 games to go and no pre-season. His foul trouble hurt and made him complacent at times but his skillset was exactly what Perth needed.

If Cotton is taking up an import spot I personally think it would be a bad move to sign Plumlee as one of the two imports (purely from a points output view), we need guys not named Cotton & Kay who can put points on the board so I would want to go with a SG / SF import pair. Doesnt have to be Terrico but wouldnt be upset to see him back if healthy.

Also - if we do lose Kay then most definitely going to need another import who can score. I liked Plumlee from a defensive standpoint, but he cant go out there night in night out and give you 15ppg.

Cotton cannot do it on his own.

He needs a Robin, those were Prather, Kay and White.

When he got Tokoto, Derek Cooke Jnr and a MIA Matt Knight, they got swept by Adelaide.

Like all other teams, there needs to be a reliable Option 2.

With Damo not usually a scoring threat, we needed more outside shooting, which is where White came in. Tokoto was good, especially early, but had nothing beyond mid-range.

@Craig, yes, if we have only 1 more import slot, and no Kay, it needs to be used on a big impact forward. Probably somebody like Kay.

As for Plumlee, pretty sure he's still "stuck" in Australia. But I guess hanging out with his GF isn't all bad. Not sure where she normally hangs out (when not travelling the globe as a model)? I think she was from Brissy originally?? Maybe Andre wants another Centre? Apparently you can't have too many.

Plumlee could avg 15ppg, he didn't need to and was willing to accept it. We needan import sf to defend import wings, clint although improved its a no, terrico actually didn't do a bad job on d last year

Cairns did the perfect moneyball, reasonably priced imports, Deng cheap and getting a bigger role and Jawaii having most of his salary paid outside the club. Chuck in a talented rookie in Noi plus the rest role players. Beat richer clubs trying to put expensive round players in square holes.

Still a chance Damo will return but it's all up to his body.
Best case scenario with Kay returning, Cotton naturalised and 2 imports is

Norton. Martin
Cotton. Lo Buluk
Import*, Steindl
Kay, Wagstaff
Import*, Majok.

Over the weekend there was a bit more talk in the papers of Perth still trying to re-sign Kay.
I don't suppose that's news really, just restating the obvious. Although I guess the news is that he hasn't yet signed in Europe.

If we don't keep Kay, and if Cotton doesn't naturalise, our 2nd import (per Trev) will be a big forward. My interpretation of that is somebody in the Kay mould.
Over recent seasons, Trev prefers to use his 5s for less than 40 minutes. On the whole my gut says AJ would not fit Trev's defensive style of play, but theoretically his 20 minutes a game would fit.

After those questions, the critical issue is what we do at the SF spot. With a strong PF, and decent centre, we could get by with a combination of Steindl, Lo Buluk, and Wagstaff.
We have 4 slots to fill, which are likely to be:
Damo
Kay or Import replacement
Starting Centre,
and ... I think the last spot needs to be an Aussie SF. Who's available that we can chase?
