Damian Martin retires

Reported on ABC News today.

What a career. An easy guy to cheer for and sad to see him go.

Here's a good article about Martin's career including his first meeting with Rob Beveridge who got him back into basketball:

Anyone else seen confirmation of this? No reports out of the usual Perth sources yet and I couldn't see it on ABC breakfast news either?

Nothing released by the wildcats yet still a rumor at this stage.

Hopefully this is a troll!

Thought he could go around for one last dance.

I thought he'd go around once more too as a cheap bench player, but I believe he had surgery just before the lockdown so if that hasn't improved his ankle he may have been forced to step aside.

stepping aside might not be that easy if its a bung ankle?

Marto will make more than the NBL can pay next year so this makes sense.

I assume the rumours are true, considering he already told us what would happen as per this thread last month:
Retirement Decision Will Depend On Injury

It was achilles injury not ankle unfortunatley.

ABC Perth, retweeted by Pick & Roll:

Sad day for Red Army "I'm anticipating Perth Wildcats captain Damian Martin will announce his retirement from the NBL this wk" @BenCameron23 tells @GeoffHutchinson on Drive. "He's going to hold a very special place in the history of this very successful team"

So a tweet from a radio program that there is an anticipated announcement - nothing solid at this point.

"He's signing to Italy"

Well played.

There was a story on the Damo retirement on ABC News Perth 7pm last night.

I thought he might go around one more time with Wagstaff and try to make it 7.

But this is a good time too, you are out on a high and the body is already sending you signals.

Press conference Friday. Basketball WA needs to open the Bendat Basketball Centre for the press conference and for me to get my game suit. I forgot to take it home with me before they closed the building.

according to the man himself....

Wants a three-peat.....retirement dependent on how injury heals.

Not retired yet and not imminent!

He wasn't a great scorer but he did everything else as good as if not better than anyone else.

Damo has the highest differential between fouls called and fouls committed in NBL (and probably world) history.

Perf - the home of the greatest home cookin' ever.

It's weird to speculated at this point.
We already know retirement is not far away, and he has already said it will depend on how his Achilles heals.

Given all the uncertainty around, and around NBL for next season, it would have to be crook for him to pull the pin at this point.

Really hope he is able to play again, otherwise missed the opportunity for a send-off.
