Hearing Mathiang Muo to the Buccs. Can anyone confirm?

Regional Blitz thoughts:
Cockburn: Handy without sending shockwaves, still awaiting the debut of Caleb White following the huge announcement on Facebook last month of his signing.
Goldfields: The addition of half of the Mandurah junior program has seemed to work alright so far for the Kal boys. Will push for a 7th or 8th spot providing their imports settle in quickly
Geraldton: Defending champs lost two close ones to the two grand finalists, import looked as budget as you could get but when you pay him the centrelink wage what do you expect. Cant see them repeating
South West: Brodie England with dunk of the year nomination was the only highlight of the weekend for the Slammers, with more talent running around in their Div 1 country Champs team or perhaps even their all conquering vets team. Another long year down in the south west
Mandurah: One would hope that Trahair would be making giant strides in development down there after being in the gig three years now but if weekend results are anything to go by then give them the spoon now. Horrific would be a kind way of describing their blitz efforts and if they get within 20 of anyone in the Top 8, I'll put money on Pauline Hanson to be the next PM

Cougars
Much the same at Cougarland. Field is still Field. Travers didn't play Saturday but suited up Sunday - he was handy in those three games but he effectively just replaces Pesava. Pond is a big unit and could be more than useful for them. Import JT Harris and Holmes still to come into the team we saw on the weekend. They will be better than the 7-19 Cougars from 2019, but not enough to make the top-8. If they had money for a second import, they would be a playoff lock.
Giants
Import Jones is smooth and could vie for SBL leading scorer this year. The other import Hammell was on limited minutes but showed enough to confirm that he loves a rebound. Would of knocked off the Cougars in the final and stayed undefeated if it wasn't for having three starters sitting out the second half with minor injuries. We didn't see their QBL recruit Tipene as he appeared to be carrying an injury. The Giants are big and long, and the addition of Ballantyne and Garang gives them very good depth. They will push for top-6, and maybe higher.
Buccaneers
Lost a couple of close ones to the Cougars and Buccs, but there would be alarm bells with what they saw from import Roach - you can see why SBL teams generally avoid imports from D3 schools. We pretty much saw their full team on the weekend, and if nothing changes then they will need Stewart to score 30ppg to make the playoffs. However if the rumours of Mathiang Muo joining them are true, they are back in top-6 contention.
Magic
Played without both imports and also Jerami Grace, and certainly were not as bad as the previous poster is making out. The return of Ben Smith is significant as he is a premier Aussie big in this league. Import Gray was an elite shooter at D2 college, and if import Marvin Smith can continue the good form he showed towards the end of 2019, the Magic will be a much improved outfit from last year, and should get off the bottom-2 at the very least.
Slammers
The Slammers were all over the place - competing well with the Cougars and Buccs, but also getting trounced by Mandurah and to end the weekend on a low... getting rolled by the State Country U/18 team. They have an import big to arrive and Aussie big Mitch Keller is still to come back from injury, but that's about all I believe. The other import Washington could well end up being the worst import in the comp, but they won't replace him as he is probably cheap and handles the ball well. They were 1-25 in 2019, they may struggle to replicate that in 2020.

Yeah we get your point. Cougars stuffed up and were made to look like fools with that announcement. But continuing to post about the 'Cougars debut of White' is actually not even funny.
Anyone have any further comments about the regional Blitz on the weekend, or what lineups we will likely see at the 'metro' Blitz this weekend?
Regional Blitz was a good concept, however it did seem weird having cockburn there.
would be good to get some invite teams in from other regional areas. Albany, Pilbara etc. Before anyone comments that they dont have imports or couldnt compete, the roster slammers had at the blitz would struggle in D league. U18 country would struggle against majority of U18 WABL teams.
SBL feels a bit dead this year... general degrading of talent, barely any hype. New formats being thrown left right and centre. I don't know, might be a transition to NBL1 but it’s a weird start

KEY GAINS:
Jay Washington (import), IMPORT CENTRE

ONE-SENTENCE SUMMARY:
Finished 1-25 in 2019, lost arguably their best player in Michael Lay, and the one import they have so far isn't setting the world on fire.
2 games for the Blitz is a joke. New format is BS
Considering most teams have previously treated the old Blitz format a joke, the Regional Blitz was a success and correct me if im wrong but the SBL Blitz is a full game - previous years were only half a game.
Combined with practice games I think it is enough of a hitout to prepare for round 1
no one cared for blitz in its previous format, so why not shake it up

The sbl threads are half the length of previous years without all the anti Lakovic and Ettridge posts.
much like the NBA all star game in recent years, the league had to make it relevant again by putting the right incentives in place
right now the sbl blitz is what it is. For some clubs its a chance to introduce their young juniors and play their d league rosters with maybe 2-3 actual SBL players mixed in. For others its a chance to give their imports some run with their guys.
Is this a bad thing? or do we, the fans want it to be more?
if we want more then what could the league do to make it worthwhile clubs playing their best players? taking a more competitive approach?

Round one of the SBL starts this weekend with just two men's games scheduled....
- Buccs vs Giants at Gero (Saturday 7.30pm)
- Cougars vs Giants at Cockburn (Sunday 12.00pm)
These three teams played each other at the regional Blitz 10 days ago:
Cougars 53 def Buccs 50
Cougars without Field, Travers, JT Harris & Holmes.
Buccs without Mathiang Muo.
Giants 59 def Cougars 56
Giants without Hammell & Tipene.
Cougars without Travers, JT Harris, Chan & Holmes.
Giants 52 def Buccs 48
Giants without Tipene.
Buccs without Roach & Mathiang Muo.
Cougars 58 def Giants 54
Cougars without JT Harris & Holmes.
Giants without Hammell & Tipene.
Looks like three evenly matched teams. Will the following players be available for this weekend?
Cougars - JT Harris, Travers, Holmes
Giants - Tipene
Buccs - Mathiang Muo
Picks anyone?

I'm sure lukosius can confirm but I'd imagine it would be a Friday night flight down to Perth, Pick up some hire cars then stay at their regular Perth accom, then early drive to the Midwest sat morning. Stay the night in Gero then back on the road by 7 for their arvo game against the cougars before the 6pm flight back to Kal

Very close R@nD0m.
One difference is that we are flying to Perth on the Saturday morning.
And this is actually something we (Giants) requested. The alternative was to start our season a week later like everyone else, but then we would have to have two triple-headers during the season (we already have one).
It's not ideal but we are fine with it and we have done these Gero/Perth double-headers before. A quick 4-hour drive up to Gero and back is nothing for us.
Cheers for the input Lukosius.. thought the league was screwing you over but if you requested it then fair enough!
Wolves WSBL players over rated? Can someone post the website link that has player ratings on it?
I had no idea the players have been rated! Is it from a website or a ps4 SBL2K game from EA Sports, or are you just spilling hatred and making stuff up about this rating system?

He played in the local comp down there. If the shoulder doesn't concern him too much, and given how horrible they looked at the Blitz one could definitely make the case for it happening sooner rather than later.

My predictions:
Buccs vs Giants
Buccs struggled for scorers at the Blitz - Ralph being their leading scorer by a fair bit which is not a good sign. Muo will change that but he's 33yo and probably out of shape to begin with. Will he even be cleared? A younger Giants outfit with more scoring options will overrun the Buccs by 10.
Cougars vs Giants
Cougars import JT Harris has been sighted in Perth so you would assume he will play. They should also have Travers as I can't see him traveling away with the Wildcats. Those two combined with Field give them a potent threesome that I don't think a very tired Giants line-up will be able to contain. Cougars by 12 over a Goldfields team on the back-end of the toughest roadtrip this season.

That's fine for your poorer clubs with low attendance and minimal corporate sponsorship but for your Joondalup, Geraldton, Goldfields and Rockinghams of the league who make considerable bank from their Corp boxes, that is simply not a sustainable solution.
If the league joins NBL1 all those courtside sponsor boxes will bring them a lot less anyway. All signage space around court up to 1.2m high will be owned by the NBL1. That's the reason a few of those clubs mentioned held up joining this season.

Does the 500 people gathering together effect the SBL ? Surely it has to....

There are fewer people at any given game, but the total number of people in the venue would be vastly larger. From memory BWA said 3000 people were expected to be there.
Anon
Years ago
An SBL game with 500-600 people there will be easier to manage as far as keeping numbers below 500, than a tournament or grading with 1000's.
the problem with grading is you have 1000s of people around at the same time, with multiple games. domestic games are one-and-done, so unlikely to be 500+ people at the venue at the same time due to one timeslot/game
koberulz - sbl attendance stats from about 8 years ago when I was involved with BWA were around 90 per game for your East Perth to 900-100 Goldfields/Gero.
Most teams were 200-400, with maybe 4 teams 500+ (2 of those were Goldfields and Gero).
Thanks for you irrelevant 8 years old attendance stats
Still relevant since I doubt any club has actually improved attendances in that time to leap over the 500 average attendance barrier. If anything attendances would be worse.

Sundays SBL game cancelled now. HTF can they justify playing any more NBL games. Irresponsible in my opinion.
What is the basis for canceling these games? The Aus Government directive is to avoid mass gatherings of over 500 people. Seems pretty clear and sensible. It would be easy to limit an SBL crowd to below this? This is not the NBA we are talking about.
They are not shutting schools, shopping centres etc which would all have 5x the amount of people daily?
Anon
Years ago
Hypothetical for all of us so called experts on here. Let's say this thing continues as is for six weeks with no end in sight, a couple of questions:
When do clubs seriously consider sending imports home? Hard to justify keeping them here for no games
When do BWA make the hard call to abandon the season?
^ re arm chair experts ... that is precisely my point. BA, BWA, the SBL are not experts. Surely you just take the directive of the Australian Government and its department of health on this? To my knowledge, playing games with limited or no crowds would not offend this?
koberulz
Years ago
Playing games with no crowds is much easier for sports that get TV and sponsorship money. If you lose the gates in SBL, and with WABL unlikely to go ahead, where does the money come from?
Best case we've kept it contained in WA and things can return to relatively normal in a few weeks, but the national leagues continuing on and other interstate travel makes that much less likely.
I don't think this is something that is going to return to normal in a couple of weeks. I don't think SBL make much from gate as it is. If games are cancelled, they make zero and still have fixed costs with imports etc.
Judge
Years ago
League reportedly has a meeting with club contacts on Monday. Hopefully they figure out a solution whereby we play with less than 500 at each game. Sucks for the clubs who draw larger crowds but for the likes of Hawks, Eagles etc it will be business as usual. If the clubs and league can not come to an agreement, make no mistake about it - it will be a drastically different league in 2021 when we have zero country teams due to no finances and maybe even the loss of one or two metro clubs at sbl level.
the bigger issue for clubs will be if WABL and domestic winter is cancelled.
SBL is a financial anchor ... clubs will be better off with no SBL for the year and there will be no financial tears ... but no WABL and no Domestic will be the financial killer for clubs and BWA.
Here here to previous post ^^^
Plus BWA taking on the Lynx, there's a legit possibility they default with no WABL, or SBL.
Of course, they won’t be quick to denounce local comps because it would be left right goodnight if they too had to cancel PMBL
it would be a bleak affair if pmbl is cancelled, stripped right down to the bone

What obligations will SBL clubs have to imports already in Australia? Will they be allowed to travel back to the USA? It will expensive if they have to stay and there are no games.
If the league is not allowing them to play once the season kicks back off in late May early June then the SBL clubs wouldnt have any obligation to keep them and pay them.
most SBL contracts also have clauses that state that if the player is unable to play for a specified period of time the contract can be terminated. Its not uncommon for this to be something like 4 weeks.
Frig
Years ago
Potentially 8 weeks before they play. Eight weeks x four imports x $6-700 per week each still a lot to fork out with no return. Even an Eagles crowd 60 spectators each week would go some way toward the costs. Or they could hire a former SBL coach as a consultant and find out how to not pay them at all. But that would show a lack o respect.

The no-import rule is to make it fair for all clubs. The second you allow an import to play 'in the spirit of the game', you are asking for problems.
If you are an import you can't play >>>>> it's clear-cut and can't be misinterpreted.
koberulz

None of the rules are official, and we have no idea what shape the league might take if it does get off the ground, so nitpicking over the detail of a rule as though it's been officially put forward is silly.
All we have is "it will apparently not include imports", which is clearly second- or third-hand information of a proposed rule, which may well take the form of "no flying players in from overseas", or have a specific carve-out for people with Australian family, or something of that nature.
If they go with a blanket "no imports", you're right, Isenbarger shouldn't play. But it would be perfectly acceptable to me if the rule was structured such that he could.
Koberulz the no import restriction is 100% happening. Teams already working on getting them home ASAP.
Also no restricted players unless Aussie and already signed to a contract. .

Koberulz the no import restriction is 100% happening. Teams already working on getting them home ASAP.The ones who live overseas, absolutely. Makes sense. But I wouldn't be surprised or upset if that rule were put in, Lakeside went to the SBL and pointed out Isenbarger's situation, and the SBL made a carve-out for him. Or indeed if someone just threw out "no imports" as an idea, everyone else involved went "yep, sounds good" and eventually someone will go "oh hey wait a minute..." and we get something with a bit more nuance.
I'm not making predictions here, I don't know what's been said to whom. I'm simply pointing out that if a ban on imports is in place, I would be okay with Isenbarger being excluded from that ban and allowed to play.

I don't see how it is a more equitable league if one club is allowed to play a player who earns $15k but a different club is required to send a player earning $15k home. Is that just purely because of the country they were born in or just because it is convenient? #equality

But the proposed ruling isn't based on who or who isn't earning 15k, it's based on citizenship, which is pretty arbitrary at the end of the day.
Anyone whose primary residence is in Australia and who has Australian family should be allowed to play.

But the entire intent behind the rulings was the smaller clubs being concerned that the league wouldn't be fair if some clubs could have imports and others couldn't afford to keep them round. It was $s driving the decision - so surely the ruling should be based on dollars
koberulz

But if Isenbarger lives here, nobody had to pay to keep him around.

But why does it matter. If Rocko can afford to pay to keep Richart around how does that provide them with an advantage if isenbarger can stay?
If isenbarger is getting paid now - that is the figure that is relevant in the conversation of fairness.

Why do you assume he's getting paid now any more than Redhage, or any other player?
koberulz

So if the league goes ahead, it should only be with no players?

Kobe - Isenbarger is not an Australian citizen, therefore regardless of him living here he can't play until he gets citizenship. Why are you continuing to push a moot point? It's pretty black and white yet you want to blur the sh** out of it all because his partner is Australian. No, it doesn't work like that. Learn and understand the rules before you try to make what is an invalid point

Delightful, another poster with no reading comprehension.
One thing is for certain, there is a real likelihood that some of these clubs won't come out the other side of this situation.

shouldn't come down to what sort of visa you're on? An import visa is different to a partner visa. Isenbarger would be on a partner visa now that he's married to an aussie???
if no imports are allowed it would be fair to just say no paid players allowed. Some clubs spent there budget on high priced Aussies instead of high priced imports, why should they walk away from this with an advantage over everyone else?
Lets see how your teams compete against us mighty Cougars without your paid players

Making it no Imports is relatively easy to implement.
Restricting paid Aussies would be hard. Where do you stop? there would be quite few players getting ~$50/game for fuel money etc. Do you restrict them?
Also, how does anyone know what is being paid? Unless things have changed, all contracts (whether they are accurate is another question) are submitted to BWA and remain sealed unless there is an issue.
Easiest thing to do is let each individual club decide what they want to do. If they want to pay an import for a reduced season and claim aim for a championship that has a * next to it, then let them go ahead.
If a club wants to send imports home and save some money then so be it.

I think we need to remember that these athletes - imports or Aussie actually depend on being paid. For some this is their only source of income. How can you take that away? Its going to be pretty hard for them to get a job any where else atm

if no imports are allowed it would be fair to just say no paid players allowed.
Wolves would have to sit out the entire season.
i understand the rationale for the no import decision to be around providing more fairness and equity to the cash poor clubs who would not be able to sustain keeping import/s here with no games on. However i think its a bit naive to think that the cashed up clubs wont still have an advantage.
With leagues all over the world being shut down, aussies returning from abroad to be with their families and the NBL being now in offseason there will be a large number of Aussie pros looking for at least some level of income.
The cashed up clubs who could afford to keep imports but have now had to send them home because of the league decision can now offer an Aussie pro at least an import wage to join them.
As the old addage goes "something is better than nothing" so whilst no other leagues around the world are operating, the local state leagues all of a sudden become a viable option for some of these guys.

It's been said above the only restricted players that will be allowed to play will be those who signed before this all happened, so that won't be an issue.
Can't see any kind of season going ahead at the
Stage. Too many restrictions. They'll draw a line
Under it. IMO. It's a shame but
Lets rule a line through 2020 - teams in NBL1 are withdrawing from comps before it has started.
WA Clubs get your stuff sorted so we can all get on board for NBL1 in 2021
whilst we are in SBL hiatus
if you could bring back 1 sbl import from the past to play for a current SBL program
A: who would that player be
B: what club would you like to see them at and why

Darnell Dialls (Former high flying Giant) to be with what would have been this years Flames (Godfrey and Hussey at the point). Hothouse would have become the Highlight House with the amount of alley oops plus drive and dish's to an import who could throw it down easily and often.

Aaron Shaw for this Lakeside team - no Kyle, will slip in to PG seamlessly and take them to the top OR Andy Gilbert on the Willetton Tigers, him and D Scott would be a joy to watch.

Grida with ACL, was his team training after the suspension shutdown? Disgraceful if so. Any other clubs doing this sort of stuff?

Grida isn't even playing in the SBL??? Don't think you can really point any fingers???
He was keeping in shape for NZBL were he is under contract. It happened before the restrictions had come in place. Nothing to see here. Just bad luck. Tough kid He will bounce back.

Tough kid is a bit of a stretch, he is Sam Van Baren's cousin, soft as baby shit
It didn't happen before the restrictions had come into place. The SBL team was scrimmaging at lakeside but not official team training. Grey area..

So with Lukosius sharing the virtual sbl site and the proposed knockout tournament of the best teams from the last 31 years.. got me thinking.
Which team and what year would be the best team the sbl has ever seen? Would it be John Gardiner's three peat hawks team of the early 2000’s. Could it be Norm Majors Swan City Mustangs of early 1990’s with 5 imports and the Ellis brothers still playing as Wildcats?
Also what teams would be in the top 10 teams of all time?
Let’s hear your thoughts
Lako's Redbacks team when they had the G_league guy Putney and Ray Turner, as well as Vigor and Nelson and they couldn't make the top 8 - that was my all time fav.

2008 Giants who embarrassed Willo in the GF: Dialls, Heron, Haney, Ballantyne, Hulme, Earle, Leske, Bowler;

Perry Lakes with Burston, Blennerhasset, Mayger, Joe Allan etc. vs Willetton Tigers with Tovey, DJ etc would have been a nice watch.
08 Giants embarrassing Willo? Willo were the 8th seed that season. Giants were supposed to win.
08 tigers beat a depleted hawks team in the quarter finals missing Crawford and Sonderleiter. JG's Hawks should have won that year

The Longley/Vlahos Redbacks would rate very highly too
Vigor didn't play in that 2015 Redbacks team. He played in the 2017 Championship team with Wagner, Smith, Redhage, Roberts, Nelson and himself. Top 5 team for sure.
