Breakers sack Rice Jnr after he breaks bail conditions

The Breakers announced today Rice Jr will no longer be with the team after he was picked up by police last night.

He appeared in the Auckland District Court this morning.
Another run in with the police.

Now gone.

Shocked to see Reality use the phrase "hood rat". Slightly less shocked to see Rice Jr in trouble again.

Walsh is doing a good job in making the era of the Bad Boy Pistons look like a group of my little pony doll collectors compared to the current Breakers culture.

His contract was up any way. Not sure why the need to say he has been cut , when he was going to be cut today from day 1.

Including him in this round smacked of desperation and only ended up bashing their reputation even worse...

I really hope Rice gets some help, but there's just not helping some people...

Hopefully Hopson can help restore some credibility to this organisation...

To be honest, Rice cost them the Taipans game. Breakers would've been better trusting Henry, Weeks etc. it wouldn’t have been easy, Cairns are on a serious roll, but all Rice did was disrupt the progress they’d made as a team.

Hopefully Hopson gets back, Webster gets back and the Breakers make up some ground.

A team trying to take short cuts to success usually pay for it. Unmitigated disaster. Talent to burn but still not good enough to get the team W's. Breakers need to develop a philosophy. Work hard defensively, Hopson, Webster carry offence. Coaches need to define Hampton's role. This is key to positive improvement for season. We've got a solid bench to back up. But it takes time and the team would have been better off working this out when Hopson went down.

Are we only blaming Walsh? The Breakers coaching staff ought to have the best understanding of Rice given the head coach's prior experience coaching him.

Agree that Shamir should also get a chunk of the blame. He knew Rice Jr well.

It's sad that at the age of 29 Rice Jr hasn't learnt any lessons from his mistakes. Career over.

Just read the press release

Why did they bother announcing this? Wouldn't it have been better to sweep it under the rug, instead of drawing attention again to the poor decision of signing this head case?

"His contract was up any way. Not sure why the need to say he has been cut , when he was going to be cut today from day 1."

Purely PR. Gives the impression they didn't tolerate it (because less knowledgeable fans aren't going to know his contract was going to end today anyway).

In all honesty though, if he still had a few weeks of playing eligibility (Hopson was out for a bit still), I reckon the Breakers still would have kept him on regardless of last night.

An attempt at good PR they're now seen to be putting their foot down with a problem player and trying to make the club look like it still has some integrity.

The media would have found out he breached bail conditions eventually. I think this is actually the smart move in this situation.

Yes; and a very anti-Breakers media (rightfully anti IMO just saying).

A lot of media articles would have put the boot in big-time if they didn't announce the termination of his contract. Basically tried to front-foot it because they knew they'd be on the back-foot pretty quick otherwise;

I don't get how a guy who is the son of a former-NBA star who made millions of dollars over his career, ended up like that? Especially compared to other current NBA players who are the sons of former-players. Trying to prove something? A sense of entitlement? Talk about throwing your talent away.
