I've thought a lot about how this changes things for the Boomers, and about what it means to lose Lemanis, and I've come basically to the cold hard realization that, with Lemanis, there was a ceiling to the type of team we could put on the floor.
Simmons wassn't going to commit under him. Bolden didn't like him. Maker's absence from the team was also notable. It is very possible our world cup team would be around the best we could've brought to the Olympics.
Now, for a world cup where most teams are trotting out their B+ teams, our team was very good. But when Spain, USA and other teams pull their finger out next year, anything short of the absolute best horses is not going to cut it.
So Lemanis made the correct decision to step aside in the interest of the team. He should be applauded for that, and should be acknowledged for his service to the team til this point. This was the correct decision and no doubt a tough one.
Moving forward it's hard to know what kind of continuity to expect from the old ways and the new. It seems like Brett Brown wants to bring in mostly his old staff, but to "extend an olive branch" to those that came before.
You'd hope that at least some of what thhe Boomers have been doing will continue on, and this is why I think someone like Will Weaver will remain on the coaching staff. But I expect we've seen the last of Luc Longley and Adam Caporn.
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that I'm confident that Weaver is an assistant, and I think this may be why Cooks has signed with Sydney. I also think that Brett Brown almost assures that Bolden will make the team. Brown certainly wont hold the kind of animosity towards Bolden that the old coaching staff probably would for walking out.
Either way, it's the right decision. But as always I feel that Lemanis' legacy deserves respect. If the Boomers do medal, he will have been instrumental in bringing the team to a place where that could become a reality, and his selfless decision to walk away will also have been a factor in leading them there. You can critique his coaching all you like, but you can't question his loyalty to the program.
