Matt Shanahan named as Head Coach of Chelsea Gulls

Shanahan played 414 NBL games for 9 different teams including South east Magic, Nth Melbourne Giants & Perth Wildcats over 15 years while wining 3 NBL titles in 1992, 94 & 2001.

Matt is excited about taking on the head coaching position and is eager to get started at Chelsea immediately.

"Matt has the skill set and experience the club is looking for. I am proud of our clubs management of the interview process and sincerely thank all interviewees and wish them well in their careers. Matt's experience and motivation to coach our senior men is paramount for the group, and the club will benefit through the ranks as he is keen to be involved with our whole club program development, juniors to seniors." - President Neil Hancock.

Matt replaces Peter Caspersz as head coach. Peter will continue his role as Club GM in 2020. Chelsea Gulls would like to thank Peter Caspersz in his role as Head coach for the last 4 years and leading the Men to a D1 title and before that as YLM coach for 3 years.

Peter will now concentrate on his position as GM for Chelsea.

“Having Matt as Head Coach of the Men, Corey Standerfer as Director of Coaching and Peter as GM gives the club an amazing wealth of basketball and community experience. In the week ahead we will be appointing our other senior coaches and look forward to an extremely busy tryout faze. Get on board The Chelsea Gulls family for season 2020.” – President Hancock.

Good pick up, will bring across a few more players I presume and good for promotion of the club. Also Godfrey to Kilsyth also good pick up.

The next coach always looks more exciting than the current one???

Who is the longest serving coach at any one time for a club?

It'd be tough for coaches in Big V to get really long duration not only having to try and get results which vary greatly for a number of factors but the time commitment year after year is massive and personal situations change

3-5 years would be a great effort in Big V with all that goes on.

Will bring some players over that will only strengthen the team and will probably be a strong contender, on experience he will be one of the better coaches at Big V level, thoughts?

A few that come to mind that were(or still are) there for a while...
Ross Moll (Whittlesea Men) was there for quite some time.
Gerard Hellier has been at SP for about 6 years now ?
Tim Mottin & Ken Harrington have been at Ringwood for ages (I know they're NBL1 now)
Glenn Reese(?) was at Hawthorn men for quite some time too.
James Madigan @ Mildura is still going after several years ?

Most Coaches don't seem to lastmore than 2 years though PersonalFoul.

Seem to recall reading somewhere that Gerard Hellier has been at Sth Pen with the same team since 2011. Decent effort to be fair

I know its not Big V but I believe Bill Runchey was on the sidelines for Frankston Men (SEABL) for about 17 years. Surely that would be the longest with one team in senior Victorian basketball

If you include the Bayside Blues era, Bill was coach for over 20 years. You'd think they would've named a grand stand after him??

^Agree.

Or at the very least not shaft the poor bloke.

Coaches that can give that sort of service are invaluable (and incredibly rare).

Vindication? He's the only guy on his team that can make a layup. He should get numbers to get potm every month.
Which will keep him happy and just how he likes it.

If everyone else is so bad, an even better job by him. Gulls have looked pretty good this month and done well.

Stop your hate on Corey. Without him the club would never got out of the crap divisions and would not be playing champ men.

And once he isn't able to play in a few years they’ll go crashing back to even further from where they started from.
