It is a shock that the highest profile NBA stars are not participating
I think they were very beatable when AD and Harden withdrew. I'm not sure McCollum or Gordon would have made the final 12 and it's very unlikely that both would have.
What's more concerning I think is that if Harden and Gordon are out, when will Tucker withdraw? And if Lillard follows McCollum, you've lost two guys who were going to make the team and play significant minutes.
Beal should definitely show up because it's not like there's anything worth doing in Washington, and if Turner plays he should basically guarantee himself an Olympic spot IMO. But the real worry at this point is that the rationale for everyone who has withdrawn could be applied to almost everyone left.

I think the final team would look like this
PG - Lillard/Lowry
SG - Beal/Middleton/Mitchell
SF - Tatum/Barnes
PF - Love/Harris/Millsap
C - Drummond/Turner
Still a pretty strong but less talented compared to previous US teams. Think Pop will lean more towards players that can be perimeter threats and play and defend multiple positions, and also go with two specialist centres.
Hence Barnes/Harris/Millsap/Middleton/Mitchell over Walker/Tucker/Kuzma/Lopez

Kyle Lowry has just had thumb surgery and is in some doubt too.
#359 I don't think that really works positionally. You'd be better off starting Lillard/Beal/Middleton/Harris and a C. If you start Lillard, Tatum, Love and Drummond, you're trotting out one of the worst defensive lineups of any contender. Whether you start Drummond, Turner, Love or even Lopez at C depends on style of play and probably matchups. And I think you have to play Love at the 5, because he's too slow to guard almost anyone who will play the 4.
Their starters 1-4 are as good as anyone, but several teams will field a better centre, and the bench really drops off.

Those $1000+ tickets starting to look pretty stinky!
What happens if too many pull out? Do they have to go back to recruiting?

I was thinking the same thing earlier, they legit might need to at this rate lol

Doesn't the team need to be named out of the 20 players?
Otherwise BA has been caught out once again telling a few porkies in relation not to selecting DJ
390 and 391, there's no reason they couldn't add players prior to the training camp. There are probably a few guys who might get consideration now like Zion, D'Angelo Russell, Jrue Holiday. Whether they accept the offer or not, who knows?
Will they still play in australia? looks like they won't play in china

I'm sorry but I want to see 'the Dream Team' miss out on a medal at the World Cup and the shitstorm that comes with that.
Pop won't be criticised but whomever does play will have a bit of a bad smell about them come the start of the next NBA season.
I like that kind of drama

Yeah I think the team they're sending is a bit of disrespect to the competition. Clearly the Americans don't take it that seriously. They'll still be the best team on paper but it's certainly not the best possible team they could send by a long shot. I want to see them fail.

There's an outside chance that the US could miss auto qualifying for the Olympics here.
The Americas get two qualifying places out of China. If the US were to lose in a quarter final, and 2 of Canada, Argentina or Brazil make the final 8, the US would have to go through the pre qualifying events next year, which would throw up all kinds of questions - would the big name stars be willing to play in that qualifying event to get through to the main Olympic tournament?
I think its an unlikely but far from impossible scenario.
To be honest I hope it doesn't happen as that'd be one of the 4 qualifying tournaments (that Australia may need to go through) that would be locked up.

To be honest, the only team who I'd bet on medalling right now are probably Serbia.

If you look up Schadenfreude in the dictionary, you'd see Proud’s smirking face when he wrote that...
In the MCG packed with people all wearing the same expression.
^ Agree. Serbia go in as favourites. US vulnerable in so many ways but probably none moreso than the risk that others withdraw. If Lillard, Beal or Harris decides to pull out, they are in real trouble. Beal should be a safe bet to go given that nothing in Washington is worth doing. But Lillard and Harris already have teammates who've decided to stay home to 'prepare.'
It would be crazy to underrate the advantage of the national teams that have played together for ages, too. Offensively, the US will be able to get some simple concepts in place and take advantage of their talent. But they don't have the elite individual defenders that they can usually bring and team defence takes time to get right. They don't have that time.
Pop is no fool, he's probably happy that a few of the egos are not there. USA could send their third best team and still win.

USA 'could' send their 3rd best team and still win, but there is no guarantee for them. Shit I'm not even counting out an upset from Australia in the upcoming days. Australia will have the cohesiveness borne of almost a decade together. And they will want it more. USA are in serious danger of dropping a game (or games) in either the warm ups or the cup proper. They've definitely come back down to the pack and while they're still very good, they're far from Invincible. Serbia, Spain, France, Canada and Australia (if Australia is in form) loom as genuine threats.
This was always going to happen.
If anyone brought tickets expecting to see the A team, you were kidding yourself.
It will be interesting to see how Canada pull together. In theory, they are just an inferior version of the US squad: largely NBA players but little experience as a unit, and a lower tier of NBA player compared to the US squad. But the US is under pressure in every single game. That game is a free hit for everyone else.

I don't think anyone was expecting the absolute A Team, but I think it was reasonable to expect at least four or five guys who the average person has heard of. This team is the crappiest and least-heralded line up since the Goodwill Games in 2001. They're still extremely talented, of course, and will be worth watching. But I think it's fair for ticket holders to feel jipped. I had always heard people saying the best wouldn't be there, but I expected at least a few of them to turn up. It's disappointing to say the least. I don't think any of the top 20 NBA players are in this team right now. Lillard maybe?
Durant, Lebron, Kawhi, Harden, Curry, Giannis, George, Westbrook, AD, Embiid. That's a pretty fair top 10. The next 10 are a lot harder because you have arguments about winning versus individual numbers, positional impact, conventional stats v newer metrics, etc.
Lillard, Walker and Beal could all reasonably be considered in that conversation. Those names don't look out of place with Kyrie, Griffin, KAT, Klay, Draymond, Jokic, Nurkic, Simmons, Aldridge, DeRozan, Lowry, CP3, Mitchell, Gobert, Oladipo. Max-contract level guys who aren't necessarily transcendent. It would have been nice to have a couple of the top 10, though. Harden and AD are really where it fell down.

Not surprised they pulled out. Which player wants to be associated with a likely US loss?
Americans don't like losers, and who’d want that black mark against them in the future? It could reduce their strength in contract negotiations. You can bet their agents would be the first to realise and would have pushed hard for them to pull out early.
