Premier League Round 19

Rankings irrelevant now as we know who is in finals, but some super important games this weekend for finals positioning.

South Adelaide vs Centrals
Not one of the interesting games! Centrals have been falling apart recently and South have had some competitive outing against good sides. I think I take South here.

Panthers by 5.

Southern vs North
In form Rockets look to take revenge on the Tigers down at the Cage. Should be a cracking match. North have all the form heading into this one while questions still remain over the Tigers ability to beat good teams towards the back end of the season. Also appears they had a lot of outs last week so if that maintains then this one will prove too much for them.

Rockets by 8.

Eastern vs West
Would expect West to again take care of this one relatively simply. Not a whole lot for either team to play for but West march towards an honourable 6th

West by 18.

Sturt vs Woodville
Again not much on the line but Woodville without doubt will play with pride as they always do. No imports for them anymore, not sure on the story with them but hasn't effected their performance. Some younger faces stepping up with extra court time. Same can be said of Sturt who have pushed Southern and Mount Gambier recently.

Woodville by 7.

Mt Gambier vs Forestville
Now this is a blockbuster. Plenty on the line with just one game separating 1st from 5th. Some great matchups with Mays and Majok taking on Dickson and Barkley plus De Wit facing his old side facing off against Tom Daly. I think the Pioneers have all the momentum and with the travel factor in their favour, I expect them to get this one done. If you're looking for a night in Saturday, I recommend tuning into the live feed of this game.

Pioneers by 6.

Woodville vs Eastern
Not much else to say on these two sides. Woodville to get it done.

Warriors by 11.

Southern vs Norwood
The rained out catch up game. Huge weekend for Southern. Norwood got them last time at the ARC but both teams look different now. Not convinced on Norwoods form line, but they have veteran savvy and know there is a lot to play for in this one.

Flames by 2.

So Woodville bring back an import with extensive injury history and underutilize the other, both bad fits anyway. Needed a true point to teach their youngsters, time for Whitmore to piss off, has had long enough to turn ship around, steadily gotten worse with him there. Assume Perry is injured as usual but where is Clippinger? Get a team like Southern that get a guy straight away that contributes but teams like Woodville, South and Centrals struggle. Of course money definitely plays a factor but some are just woeful and Jones jumping ship is terrible.

Reply #750316 | Report this post

Money plays a huge factor! Centrals are lucky enough to have got Riewer. From what I have heard, that's exactly why Jones left early. Got a better offer somewhere else

Pretty offensive comments towards teams such as Souths. Many teams have talent on the floor,
just not on the coaches bench. So many games at more than just one club that have been neck and neck only to have coaches pull players and put mind boggling combos on court and lose badly in the 4th. The discourse in the crowd is palpable and online evident and clear. Even coaches who have done National Coaching levels you have to wonder if they are in it for the right reasons or to be part of a particular coaching group to hang out with their mates. Not a good reason and when you leave the wings of your idol coach many will be caught out and I get the feeling thats whats happening. Being a nice guy or associated with particular coaches does not mean you have the goods at that level. Many get away with it for a while when given a ready made experienced talented team until they don't have that luxury. The tell is have they coached lower age juniors and been able to develop them in to a team and over two years in an age group improved or have they been given talent a previous coach developed and made finals and showed improvement individually and strong team concepts or did they take that same team and by the time they were finished with them they had dropped in skill, team work and moral and dis that coach attempt to remediate themselves and change or ask for assistance, or turn on the team. I see many teams and players destroyed on and off court with the power many coaches are allowed to have over players and teams. There is no accountability and too much mateship between coaches. They do each other no favours by continuing to ignore the issues over the needs of the teams. This is the downfall of many clubs and can be avoided by having strong leadership, genuine support honesty and an overriding club philosophy and style of play. Successful clubs have these in place and and demand their coaches are there for their team not themselves. They hold themselves accountable above all else and the teams know it and they work hard for their coaches and their team. The club is rewarded across all ages and levels including Premier League and its not about the wins. Its about each team at that time within the comp of that season. Perspective is required and egos left at the door. Unfortunately many mistake confidence and competence with egos and personality with competence.

Why is it alledgedly the PL coaches job to develop junior talent?
Of course any club juniors that make PL should be developed by the coach but it always seems that there is an expectation from certain circles that development is on the PL coach. Unless that coach is also in the role of JDO or something similar it would appear to me it isnt on them.
Seems strange to constantly talk down PL coaches who have nothing to do with juniors.

No excuse but losing Allmon their only player didn't help. But 6 players is a joke, their 18s just beat Sturt the national champs. South have rocks in their heads is Petty is re-appointed for next season. It has been discussed on here numerous times about his crazy court combinations and tonights game takes the cake. To lose to Centrals who only had 6 players after being in a winning position clearly shows he has no feel for the game nor does he know what his players are capable of. How many games have South been in a winning position this season only to then end up losing due to what can only be described as bizarre substitutions. It was unfortunate that Allmon went down with an injury tonight but that would be the time that you would think the coach would make sure he had the players out on the court to cover the loss and maintain the lead but sadly that was not the case and to then blast the players after the game(clearly audible from outside the changeroom) for the loss just proves the point that he has no idea. I would think for some players the end of the season cannot come soon enough.

From what I have heard from a few in the stand, is that over 5 of them went to some Sudanees tournment and bailed last second. I'm sure old Ricky is happy about that. Guy gives them all a chance and they do that, quite a shame.

But Ricky would have know those kids treat the sudanese tournament as their Olympics, don't know why he didn't have others. Lucky Lual and Magok was there then. But bizarre from Centrals again, shows how their season has imploded. No discipline.

449 something learnt from colleagues and the point about coach accountability and respecting players as people not pawns in their coaching game. And 496 A coach can chose to let those players go or simply not play them and lose a game they had the lead in. Then it is also their responsibility to use their training and workshops to develop those deficiencies. Then there is individual work. Do you really think yelling and abusing people especially the young is going to get the best out of them and gain their respect for you. No ! There is passion and getting overly assertive then there is abuse. In any other setting it is abuse and you go to court or lose your job for workplace abuse bullying ir harassment. And if a player is not performing as in a workplace you should check if you have given them the correct training and then if you have give them warnings under a workplace policy and then eventually you fire them and employ someone else. Why is it that Sport and Schools continue to be a place where behaviour is tolerated and accepted that off the field/court or track and outside of school grounds would have dire consequences. It sickens me to think of the damage that is being done. And please don't talk about resilience. It is not resilience to teach our young that they have to take this abuse from someone and that an organisation of any kind has no responsibility to educate, coach or teach you. And then there is an association, club, business, leadership responsibility to help the coach, teacher, leader or whoever if they are displaying this behaviour as well and not allow them to further damage others and themselves. It is not in their best interest either. Is anyone reaching out to these coaches and saying the behaviours win or lose are not acceptable and also if they are okay. Why are they behaving that way. Do they need help with stress, support or education themselves and that may not be in coaching, it may be in how to teach, how to manage people, communication and conflict resolution. Too many coaches are just thrown in completely unprepared and don’t have all the tools and skills necessary beyond a knowledge of the game. That is not enough.

Those men, not boys, have been extremely unreliable in the past. Even so there should have been a couple more on the bench. At least a couple like most clubs that just sit there warming the bench hoping to get some garbage time. Centrals have had a lot of success in 18s for a few years now, apart from college kids where are they. Their 23s are terrible, even with the decline of that competition.
Will be interesting to see what penalties will be handed out. Who will come in or will they run with 6 again?

I agree with coaches being made accountable...West surely need to take a good hard look into appointing their next men's head coach, if they are going to go down that path. I believe Corey has been out coached so many times this year, his rotations have been questionable at best, up at three quarter time in so many games only to lose...before people start putting the blame on the players, don’t forget, he chose his team, all have the talent to be playing in this grade however he has not managed to get the best out of them...what is it? Lack of communication skills? Can he only coach a team full of super stars? Lack of respect from players? All in all a disappointing year.

Anon, I'll rebut you. McLean is doing a solid job without a second import. I’m a West fan but the last few home games the men have been playing better together which was something they struggled with early on. The big import Shane might have hurt their chemistry. Truslove and Spud are over the hill and 20 mins a game for them is probably a little too much but they don’t have much else. A 6/7th spot finish is about round the mark for the squad they’ve had to battle with all year and there’s nothing wrong with that. Will be great to see all the guys back with two strong imports next season! Be positive!

Above makes a lot of sense, but with a passionate coach have the players tuned him out? Knows his x and o's, but with coaches that wear heart on sleeve sometimes the message wears thin after a few years, can only pump them up so much. Really missed a go to guard, Thomas is probably best all around guard but not a go to, take over a game type player. Unless they recruit a local big, do they go with 2 big imports or use one on a guard, Rennie and co have proven they're not starting material.

Possibly tuning coach out, the men seem different to years gone by. Thomas not playing with same fire as years gone past but still been very good. Rennie doing an admirable job for a young guy. Who is co you're referring to? Johnson still very young and so is Matthew Fauser. They need a few more years experience. They don’t have much off the bench. Need a good import shooting guard to open up the floor for the slashers and shooters.

Bullies protecting bullies by more bullying and harassing negative comments. SAD ! There is another way, it still involves passion and assertiveness but not abuse that wears down players and their families, friends and fans. Some chose a better life because it is out there. Some chose to stay because they are in a cycle where have been abused enough and see it all around them that they believe it is normal. Again thats sad.

#750587 & 588 are both correct. Corey is an intelligent coach and does know the game as good as anyone else in the league, however, there comes a time when the team does switch off and the message does not get through any longer.
For what its worth, Corey coaches by his playbook and does not alter his plan. By not being instinctive this has come to bite them particularly in last quarter losses. As a follower of West and watching some of the juniors this club has, they will be fine if continued to be developed. Rennie is a player and providing he is given opportunity he along with Johnson, Valk & Fauser can be the nucleus of this club in the coming years. They do need bigs now that Blake is retiring, so that is something they will need to amend. Keeping Thomas and Kubank is vital as these two are the backbone, one can only hope the club understands that not taking some players for granted may be the pivotal piece in moving forward.

Talks of moving Corey on is pretty silly. He's a proven coach, one year removed from COTY and two years from a title.

A down year for sure but he’s also won two of the last five titles in this league.

Current standings,

1. Mt. Gamiber- 17-3
2.North Adelaide- 15-4
3.Southern Tigers - 14-5
4. Forestville- 14-4
5. Norwood- 13-5
6. Centrals- 8-11
7. West - 7-12
8. Woodville - 7-12
9. Sturt - 3-16
10. Eastern - 3-16
11. South- 3-16

Big game Wednesday between Norwood and Forestville.

Looks like Centrals could still finish 6th which is too bad considering Mt.Gamiber in the league this season. They could of made the playoffs if they weren't in it.

Player movements for next season? Where do you think some guys might go? Do you think any of the Imports will stay put or try to team up with certain clubs?

I reckon Mt.Gambier will not be in the league next season?

Favorite to win the Woollacott award? My pick is Barkley from Mt.Gambier

Starting 5? This is tough as ever with some really good players going to get left off the list. I'll say Barkley, Morris, Allmon, Daley and whose the 5th? McVeigh? Starling? Deng? Riewer?

Whose the most Valuable to there team? Where if they were not on it, the team wouldn't be where they are right now or the team would be fine without them. This question is always fun to ask even in the NBA.

My 5 favorite players to watch in no order,

Barkley
Daley
Riewer
Starling
Deng

Given the circumstances leading up to the season, Richard Hill has done a pretty good job and should be a frontrunner for COTY.

Ricky Simpson will also get a look in.

Best 5:
Turnage
McVeigh
Deng
Barkley
Daly

Very tough to pick the next best 5 players though: de Wit and Riewer have manned the point well this year, and there still leaves Brine, Starling, Morris, Allmon and Mays (among others) in the front court.

The problem with Jamie is that he thinks he is half decent when he is far from that. He has no resume to speak of and no history of winning anything?
That still isn't an issue if South put some experienced assistant coaches and support around him, the assistant coaches are VERY VERY poor with similar resumes to Jamie with no clue whatsoever.
So is it Jamies fault? Is it the clubs fault? Probably a bit of both. Jamie isn't up to it and South have dropped the ball in both his appointment and the support crew and mentoring given to him.

South board need to take a serious look at who is making these decisions and how qualified they actually are. Undoubtedly the worst season of Panther Mens basketball in 20 years.

Talk of whether or not Corey will step down is plain stupid. People have been so used to West going deep in the playoffs that one bad year causes panic. Agree with above, have to keep Thomas and Kubank at all costs. Not sure I agree that Valk Fauser and Johnson can be backbone unless they develop a bit more. If that's your backbone you’re looking at middle of pack contention. Thomas + Kubank + two good imports is enough to win you games in PL IMO.

Is there any truth to Norwood forfeiting the game on Wednesday. If so they should be removed from the finals and replace with the next best team.

Thanks Panther but not better on the women's side of basketball. A lot of disgruntled players including the import who can not wait to get home. Not sure what is worse is that he gets another year with the women or is in charge of the junior program. Either way South are stuffed.

#677. I think you will find McVeigh plays 3 and sometimes 2 for North. Never at 4

South just weren't smart in appointments on both side by all accounts. Bottom in the men and second to bottom in the women's comp doesn't really send a glowing endorsement of both coaches.

712, I wasn't listing by position, just picking the best 5.

Had they been listed by position, it's interesting that you find McVeigh at the 4 (which he plays at NBL level) more absurd than Barkley at the 2 though...

Admittedly South's women are a million times better than last year, and I think Dickel by name, Dick by nature.
How can you surround Petty with experienced coaches, they should have got job in 1st place and maybe groomed him. All well and good watching Deano with best team money can buy from last few years. And although not knowing him well personally, don't think he has a clue even as assistant. Best thing he could have done is assist Mick at Woodville women's and learned from a legend, but Mick wouldn't have wanted him.
Someone that gets sack from Centrals 16 girls div 2 team becoming premier league coach is a great premise for an Adam Sandler movie, maybe a Billy Madison sequel!

Good one. It's what Vlahov was thinking when he laid the smackdown on his son.

666 I've heard rumours of a couple of players movements in the men’s comp. Some bench guys looking for opportunities and then a starter who wants out. Not to forget probably all of the south men’s team who will no doubt want a release.

considering souths reserves got beaten by a 6 man centrals team last night, who would want any of them

he has probably heard a bunch of disgruntled players who haven't had as much court time as they expected are going to look at getting a game elsewhere.

they will speak with coaches at other clubs, who will promise the world and not deliver and they will end up playing less time or not at all.

then there is the hired guns, that will auction themselves to the highest bidder, enter, southern, forrestville, norwood.

then there's the bench warmers that will just give up, some will go off and have successful employment careers, and others will end up in prison

Ahhh, Norwood, another year older for their vets, no junior development with none on their way through. Wait for the big fall off in a couple of years. Wonder when Rojo will get the scapegoat card?

Norwood need to retire some of their players and start thinking about the future before it is too late. The coach should also go with them.

Cooper was good and KB tried to change the culture but they got rid of him quickly. Current coach is weak and too worried about his job.

KB got rid of current coach as well but had enough of old guard and left, they couldn't wait to bring back a yes man and puppet. He knows his x and o's, just the players don't respect or even like him. Even back when they won title he was odd man out. Provided a lot of training and game plans but came down to Coops knowing how to coach men. But with his junior development deal with the club and being a patsy I can't see them moving him along for awhile.

Norwood handed the game to Forestville on a silver platter tonight by leaving B-Mo on the bench.
Thanks coach!

Hasn't he been really shit this year? Ex college teammate of player coach? Think that sums it up. Plenty of decent young import bigs that would've really given the inside presence they need but ego of player derailed it to get a job for mate. And puppet of coach went for it. But I could be wrong. More interest to me did Jordy do his job and waive towel good enough, that could be reason they lost.

its no secret that teams have discovered norwoods weakness and are exploiting it.

it is also no secret that bmo would make norwood much stronger as a unit.

there is no question in my mind that bmo is not only a much better off the bench player than andrew long, but also a better starter than daniel webber.

Cooper seemed like a decent nbl player and person. Disappointed with Norwood's physical / intimidatory style with him as coach. Seems like their current mob are attempting to run with that legacy? Is this typically the Norwood style of play?
