I think that in NZ, "Global" is anything that covers both North AND South Islands.
Perthworld and Dazz agreeing. Oh that's right it means nothing.
Has anyone actually read the article? I would reckon no.
hey are talking about the new cap and paying everyone more money, so hopefully its a signing of an import of GLOBAL significance. That's my reading of the article.
Thanks Trev. That makes far more sense than most replies here. Let's see what occurs.

They might do something out there like sign Burger King as a major sponsor.
Fans wouldn't really care about sponsorships, and sponsors aren't exactly the kind of thing to be 'global news'.
Potentially a big name coach but not sure who would be worthy of 'global'.
Most likely it's a big name signing. My tip is lamelo ball. I reckon NZ would be a decent fit for him too.
Otherwise it might be a decent ex NBA player. They would need to be fairly high profile to count as 'global' though and not just be some random bench player. Carmelo Anthony maybe? but highly highly doubt it, they wouldn'thave the money for him. Unless it wasn't about the money and he wanted to do a bogut and play here, get his body right, prove he can still play, win an MVP, then return to the NBA with a contender in Feb/March.
Going to be a lot of disappointed NZ and NBL fans if it turns out to be a pretty lame announcement, expectations are getting high.
Lamelo ball is my tip though.

Is Shawn Marion still involved with the Breakers? If so he could be bringing a friend over or something to play.

Maybe the are going to pull a Sixers and announce they have re-signed Ngatai.
Despite Lamelo growing physically and naturally getting better, his struggles going against legitimate teams in Lithuania would be concerning. Ferguson being a 5 star recruit and Bowen as well being basically bench players wouldn't be good for the Ball circus and the distractions it would bring. But it may increase ticket sales just to see Lavar. IMO not good for the team, but if Melo wants to get drafted and not be considered a freak show he'd have to be on best behavior. If it's true will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Oh ok, yeah, a "global" sponsor might make sense.
Or as Paul said, they could be teaming up with Global Culture. That would be a witty reference.

Global could mean almost anything. Maybe they've just invested in some world globe fitballs, or have a "global focus" on whole-body training.
It’s probably nothing guessed at here.
I'm tipping it’s a game/series against an International team in the lead up to the WC

Most credible guess so far, announcement would help sell tickets.
But what national team would get a challenge from NZ Breakers?

Have they possibly got games against NBA teams in preseason.

I get the need to sell/build up the announcement; but NBL teams are notorious for building up the announcements too much (Which leaves fans disappointed).
Not sure of the need to build it up as "Global News" (even if there is some pun behind it) - unless its Lebron coming down south; I doubt the basketball world is going to be thrown completely off-tilt by whatever is announced.

Ever since Walsh bought the team he's only thought about making money over winning. LaMelo fits everything Walsh said in that article to a T.
Unless Walsh chose his words poorly, I would bet heavily on LaMelo.

A Tweet I just read
"Reports out of Atlas Pl that @NZBreakers have signed @carmeloanthony @NBL How does this shake things up @Liam_Santa @ShaneHeal @chomicide"
Lets get this rumour pumping
If its Carmelo look for the Breakers to have a minimum of 56 technicals next season

I feel like Carmelo's ego wouldn't take a move to a lower league. He obviously doesn't need the (relatively small) payday, and he would be pretty heavily ridiculed.
if its Carmelo Anthony a big if do yo expect him to stay for the hole year

Bigger news now is Olgun admitting to watching Aladdin.
If its something like sponsorship fans are going to rage lol
Liam Santamaria has said a lot on overtime that Braswell maybe replaced
Carmelo to the bright lights and nightlife of New Zealand, yeah right!!!
If Tyreke going anywhere I'd pick Columbia as top choice.

Forget Melo and LaMelo, I'm pretty certain it's RJ Hampton
Breakers were smart to quash the Carmelo rumours straight away. Lesser orgs would've sat on it for free publicity.

My stab in the dark is that they are starting a 2K esports team.

How embarrassing is modern day media though? The notion of investigative journalism is well and truly gone.
Someone starts a crazy rumour and the media (Stuff, NZHerald etc) run with it.
Somebody remind them that they look like fools. We shouldn't let them off for stuff like that.
