Premier League Round 9

Saturday
West vs North
Two teams tipped to make finals and contend for the title now battling to stay in touch with the top teams. A nightmare for West upon Kubanks return after having a great start to the season. Questions will be asked of the leadership group and coaching staff if they can't right the ship soon. North also have found the going tough against some of the top sides though they appear to have been a little more competitive than West and have college kids returning soon which will see them among the contenders again. McVeigh scoring easily and will present a matchup problem for West.

North by 7.

Eastern vs South
Panther army loud and proud after getting on the board against Sturt. Huge comeback from South and a big coming out party for one of the leagues best young talents in Jarryd Hoppo. Mavs faced a tough Norwood team made tougher with their imports debut. They have been competitive recently and will be looking forward to a lesser opponent to get a much needed win on the board. Morris a handful for any team and will score 30+ easily here.

Eastern by 10.

Centrals vs Sturt
Will Casella be there by tip off, or will he have sent in his resignation? Can't feel good losing to his old club, especially blowing a half time lead. Notice Rawson is back and straight into form with 30, but besides he and Rivers there are not a lot of others up to the standard. Centrals hung with an undermanned Eagles but couldn't defend down the stretch. Riewer with a great all round game and with multiple contributors, I think these guys are finals bound.

Centrals by 15.

Norwood vs Southern
Massive game between two in form teams. Southern have corrected course after a slow start and have finally had some good wins, albeit against out of form sides. Norwood looking like outright favourites with Moultrie having his way in limited minutes against Mavs. Brine will be out to prove a point against his old club and will get the job done. This is set to be a cracker, if you have nothing to do Saturday, ARC is where you should find yourself.

Norwood by 6.

Forestville vs Mount Gambier
An interesting game made more interesting with the absences Forestville had Thursday. Presumably both Teys and Majok won't suit up on Saturday which may just tilt this in the visitors favour. The Eagles showed there's plenty more to them than the 6ers and Mays showed his quality with a huge game against Centrals. They will need something similar to keep up with the Pioneers though the matchup of Tom Daly vs Kane De Wit the two best PGs in the league will be critical too.

Mount Gambier by 8.

Sunday
Woodville vs Mount Gambier
Warriors on a charge now after taking care of their local rivals. No Stanbridge for a couple of weeks but it may help define their roles as others have stepped up in his absence. Turns out they may not need both imports to fire as Boonstoppel has stepped up. Tough for Mount Gambier to back up on the Sunday but I expect them to be a little too classy for the Warriors, who won't go down without a fight.

Mount Gambier by 11.

Probably a good point though both coaches have runs on the board over a lot of years so might have some leeway.

Would say both are top 3 coaches in the league most years just things aren't gelling right now.

Can't be serious.questions be asked. Shows complete lack of comprehension. Both teams will feature come finals. Slight hiccup.. losing import. Team will readjust. Too much quality and pride for west to just roll.over...

West caught a Tigers outfit at home on the hop first game and have beaten South and Sturt, the two cellar dwellars. Hardly a 'great start to the season' factoring in the opponents. Sacking an import maybe says a lot of where they are at culture wise.

One of those coaches has bought a team while the other is playing club players. Big difference.

Maybe sacking an import shoes club culture is valued.

Corey's 3 years

2017 had the best import in the league and a nutcase bench player who got suspended in the GF.

2018 sacked an import pre season, had Legan who was good but ineffective down the stretch of the season and same with Dowdell.

2019 already sacked one import and the other one has been solid but not in the top tier of imports for the league.

So you would suggest Corey has been hit and miss both in identifying talent and character. Every year there has been some issue, even the year they won so perhaps there is a deeper culture issue.

So easy to be critical... So easy to make the know it all comments after events... west and north been very consistent with the current coaches so clearly they know there stuff. Maybe league is improving. Maybe other factors but to claim both those coaches are not adequate is just crap.
Done without big spends unlike eagles and tigers. There's the problems.

Hmm no disagreement about Southern. They spend money they don't have. I think youd be surprised how little Eagles spend in comparison to Southern. Possibly less than North. Teys and Majok were both offered more money from other clubs but stayed at Eagles for less.

NBL clubs get imports wrong every year and they'd have more resources than anybody in PL would. These coaches are probably searching and researching after a days work so it can’t be an exact science. Tell me one coach that is batting anywhere near 100!

Southern has issues with Mays last year. Maybe Maclean’s just got the balls to not stand for it? Norwood hated Sanders too.

In his case in 3yrs he’s bought out 2 All Star 5 guards. The fact both his imports from last year were resigned says he can’t be doing too much wrong.

Old man in the arena quote is well and truly relevant in this forum!

This year in terms of spend its

Forestville - they may be taking a discount to stay but neither is cheap, neither is Mays, plus De Wit was heavily sought after and an import off the bench.

Mount Gambier - T Daly is high cost (but worth it), S Daly would have cost to keep him out of NBL1, Barkley straight from the G league would be getting a nice bag plus Burdon and a cheaper import. Wouldn't even be surprised if they’re paying Rathjen to skip footy.

Norwood - the regular crew plus Brine who might be the most expensive non NBL Aussie and two imports.

North - Starling highest paid import, Dowdell, McVeigh on a big wage and BJ ain’t coming for free.

Southern - Drmic and Johns on some money plus Turnage would have demanded a bit after last year. Not the same spend as previous years, doubt anyone else is getting more than scraps, of anything.

West - 2 imports, one was shopping around so you know he’s getting paid, Kubank, Thomas... not sure any others would take much.

Forestville - de Wit came relatively cheap given he's a club junior and the Pioneer's situation pre-season. Harris, Rios and Mays on sweet f all. Teys and Majok obviously paid well.

Mount Gambier - Dickson wasn't cheap: Mt Gambier outbid other PL clubs. Same goes for Burdon.

Norwood - spot on.

North - Starling (the most of any import) then daylight. North outbid others for McVeigh.

Southern - Drmic and Johns could be on less since questions have been asked of the club's financial situation (I don't know). Drmic wasn't cheap to acquire originally though.

West - not sure that Kubank is being paid. It's a pretty modest budget either way. Which import was shopping themselves around?

Woodville, Centrals, Mavs also modest budgets. Sturt basically don't spend on PL. South might have spent more if anyone wanted to play for them other than Jonnek.

Forestville don't spend anywhere near as much as North or Southern. Deng, Harris, De Wit all club juniors from a young age and have been coached by Andy since they were u18's. Teys and Rios also have loyalty and have returned after being out on the market. Not sure how much Mays was asking for, but if he these so called 'issues' then it probably lowered his value.

Drmic was in Dandenong earning a HUGE pay packet last winter, he alluded to it on many occasions. Why do you think he returned to play under Dean this year? Do you reckon he enjoys driving 45 mins on his moped down south 3 nights a week to improve his game?? No, he needs $$$$, he has a young family coming.
Likewise for Turnage. Very very good player. Would not have been cheap. And there's the hackham mansion hero Johnsy, have you seen the size of that house !!!
Not to mention recruiting Burns, Omamagho, Calligeros, Spurritt from Norwood/Sturt/South. Yeah they also enjoy a few trips down the freeway each week.

Either way we have a crackking bunch of teams and will be a great playoffs. Gambier, Southern, Norwood and Forestville are all legit. North have the tools but need a better coach, not a fist fighting flog. West looked good for a weeks but have fallen, and those losses could be very crucial and pip them out of the playoffs. Haven't seen much centrals but do they have the experience and veterans to bring them home? Eastern are a feel good story but can't compete with the big dogs consistently. Woodville meh, South are trash, Sturt are trash (but have love, support, and facebook shares)

Game of the round, ARC or wayville???

Heard Norwood made a big play for Deng, admittedly loyalty played a factor in returning to eagles. Teys wanted to play with his sixer boys last year, looks like he enjoyed it and stayed or was told of what was coming in. Mays took a discount after North quickly ripped up contract, shopped him around to numerous clubs but they were scared off. Dropped his price significantly because he wanted to stay with his local girl, heard father in law was offering to off set some costs. Don't know how he is behaving at Wayville, perfect fit for them though. Rios goes from being a top scorer, admittedly at Eastern where even Vozzo gets a game, to coming off the bench. Can't be too cheap as a proven returning player. A few other clubs could have used his services, maybe scared off from his mad bombing away from last year.
Norwood probably have had the best recruits with forestville. Not sure how Legan and Brine would fit in with an already dominant perimeter team but has proven great fits and Moultrie could be final piece. If those shots begin to dry up they need a steady inside game. Still wonder who will go to bench if they start Moultrie, coach Webber might be having a few sleepless nights.
North have that inside game to go along with McVeigh, BJ just has to play point guard and not try to be scorer, easy to get inside his head, hopefully with experience he'll work it out. That or Starling having some words in the change rooms if he goes rogue on occasion.
Johns would have to be happy with how career has turned out, not up to nbl but scored a house out of playing at home. Southern have shown weaknesses this year, Max might get a couple of dollars but all the money's tied up with Johns, CJ and Drmic who was on 30k last time he suited up. Losing Brine and Mays have hurt them depth wise and if Drmic or Cj have an off night then they don't have any consistent scorers for them. Don't know how Spurritt gets a mention as a recruit, averaged 2ppg for Norwoods reserves last year.
West are just a mess, thought their locals would carry them but definitely something wrong there. Body language is terrible, arguing with each other on court. McLean is a great coach but very passionate, can they have started to tune him out. When Spud and Truslove are playing big backup minutes then there's clearly no depth there.
Mt Gambier have started to gain momentum, think it will be them and forestville in final.

Great game between Eagles and Pioneers. Harris with 31 and Mays 29 and 14. Pioneers were lead by Barkley who had 23 and 17 and Burdon who had 20

Norwood beats Southern by outscoring them 30 to 5 in the second qtr. Great game by Brine with 26 and 19

West plays North tough but can't pull it out. Thomas with 12, 11 and 9 and Jeffereon 22 and 8. Johnson had 29 for North, McVeigh with 19 and 13. Lack of Depth on North concerns me going forward.

Just like that South gets 2nd win in a row over Eastern. Monster game by Allmon with 37 and 18. Hoppo had 21. Eastern was lead by Morris who had 24 and 8.

Centrals over Sturt. Centrals were lead by Riewer who had 26 and shot 7-7 from 3. Diing and Dau both had 22. After watching these guys play on Thursday at Forestville, I was impressed with them and think they can possibly sneak into the playoffs. Riewer is turning into one of my favorite guards in the league.

Sturt was lead by Meakes with 24

Woodville plays Mt.Gambier today at 3:30

Norwood have no depth at all. They go maybe 7 deep and then have a long bench of players who are not up to it and never play anyway.

As the above poster said, an injury or two and they are in trouble.

498, you might want to go and check the box scores so far. Norwood rely on their starters way more than any other team in terms of both minutes played and scoring output. Literally every other team is deeper than Norwood. Norwood are just better at the top end.

If they stay healthy they win it. If not they are in trouble.

North have always been missing a pure shooter or two but considering the amount of zones they face due to this "tactic" and their win / loss column the past few years being pretty healthy, I wouldn't think they are that crappy.
Still reeks of social ball. At least trap back into it or something.

North are a bad 3 point shooting team
North struggle against zone

So why should they play man to man? You want the West coach to play a defense that suits North? That sounds pretty smart.

North ended up shooting an extra 10 3's than they normally do and hit 23%. A smart strategy by the coach.

The state 18's coach also runs a zone sometimes.
Vic Metro's winning 18 state team ran zones sometimes.
NBL Teams run zones sometimes.
College teams run zones.

"North have always been missing a pure shooter or two"

So you even admit it is a better strategy yet want to attack a coach for doing it. That makes a lot of sense.

No the difference is in those leagues they have players that can actually shoot and/or beat it with passes so they can't do it for 40 minutes. If the offense can't do those things like North then they should stay in a zone.

Syracuse will regularly stay in a zone for the entire game.

It is just another defensive strategy that can be more effective than M2M against certain opponents. Anon trying to say it is just a social ball tactic and the coach is wrong for doing it, is just stupidity.

Zones may be seen as an acceptable tactic against poor shooting teams but they are bad for spectators and take away some great matchups that people pay to see.
Used tactically during games no problem. To sit in one for 40 minutes is soft and from a spectators point of view makes for very boring basketball.
