Cattalini confirmed leaving

For those who doubted the news, this was posted on EuroBasket.com and the news was sent to me by someone with a Swiss email address:

Martin Cattalini (202-F-73) will be back in Spain. DKV Joventut signed him to a one year deal, so the Australian player will be able to play in the ACB Leage again after 2 seasons in Seville. Cattalini averaged 22.8 points and 6.4 rebounds in his last year with Adelaide 36ers.

---

So there we are. Still nothing on the Sixers site though.

Both Axel Dench and James Harvey are playing in the Treviso Summer League shortly. Kevin Freeman, ex-Bullets import, is playing in the USBL in the playoffs under coach John Starks.

I hope they don't sign the former nba point guard, he is too old and i think farley should be there number 1 choice regardless and i reckon if we get him back we may be able to keep him for a few seasons this time!

Considering D-Mac is still playing at 40, Gaze at 39, not to mention David and Leapin Leroy played into their 40's, I don't think age should be an issue.

If the guy has the fitness, the form, and the skills the team needs, great!! Especially with NBA talent. (and HOW old is Michael Jordan again????) :)

Pity that the Cats going, good luck to him in Europe.

Now, ex nba 41 year old point guards is interesting..John Stockton is 41! But, Derrick McKey would be around that age as well, perhaps more likely than John! Checked out the nba website for the 1983/83/85 drafts as a fair few of those players would be around that age... interesting looking through is and seeing if there was possibilities.

An ex-NBA guard would probably be some dude who played a few games as a backup in the 80s or something and made an earning playing in Europe (etc)...Darnell and KB are 'ex-NBA', and look at Brunson!

Found a thread on the VBL forum about Sedale Threatt being in Australia.

"hey, yeah he trained with us last night. I tell ya what, he may be 42 but damn he can get up the floor. Just puts the jets on flys!!
Its like nothing i've seen before."

Also, career stats in the NBA. Best season was 1991-92 for the Lakers: 15 PPG, 7 APG.

Last season in the NBA was 7 years ago, 1996-97 when he played for Houston and averaged 3.3 PPG.

I'd still rather farley as he is proven with the 6ers and being at around 28 yrs old he could possibly play 4 or 5 years with us, plus he is my all time favourite import!

Anyone who saw George Gervin and Johhny Moore play at Apollo would realise that an old NBA player can still kick the buts of young NBL players.

Johhny Moore from memory was 40+ and he killed Pearce and Mc Kay both when they were in the Boomers squad. He out played them in every facet of the game....was amazing to see.

I can distinctly remember trying to guard Johnny Moore full court, being young & full of beans, I thought I'd go the ol' run & jump only to have Johnny totally break me & anyone else who tried down soooooo easily. We were all gobsmacked at how good this guy at 40+ was. He didn't just take us back to school we ended up in the sandbox at kindergarten.

There was another guy on that tour Jarvis Basnight who threw down some big dunks. The Iceman only played a few minutes, after the game he said that the Aussie women were keeping him up all night!

I reckon that getting Threatt will be cheap allowing us to go after a quality big man ie. Paul Rogers, just a hunch.

Seb007 - I poseted that post before I saw Sedalle Threatt being mentioned - I was a Lakers fan in the dark ol' days when Cedric and Sedale had to carry the team, so I know who he is!

Still have an old school game on tape of the year the Sonics made the finals where Threatt and Vlade schooled Kemp and co!

Libertine - You wouldn't happen to have any other Lakers games from that era on tape would you?

Sorry Nat - I only ever taped the games when the Lakers were playing and they showed it on NBA Action...I was only 10-11yrs old, so forgive me! In hindsight, if I knew how bad basketball would go downhill, shoulda taped it every week.

Top 10 plays of the week was always the greatest thing every Sunday.

Kg and Cornsey just interviewed Cattalini in Italy (on a bus driving to a game). His response to the question of leaving was that he had several financially attractive offers from Spain and Italy but had not yet made up his mind. He would decide within 2 weeks of arriving home from the tour and after discussions with his wife. He implied the lifestyle was a negative for the family but as mentioned the money was lucrative. very interesting!
