Adelaide v Melbourne Jan 28

Massive game tonight. A Melbourne win sees them grab top spot, an Adelaide win sees them into 4th. Who is the more united team?

Melbourne with a strong win over the Hawks earlier in the round lost to the Sixers last time they met in the open air spectacular. The "Selfish Sixers" had a massive Q1 against Perf, but then were woeful in Q2 and Q3, with Deng the only one offering some semblance of respectability to the score in Q4. The fact the bench scored more points than the 5 highlights a problem (maybe expect a third of the score off the bench?)

Sixers with some massive soul searching required need to bounce back against Melbourne. I'm thinking the motivation for 4th spot is there, but Melbourne's motivation for top is stronger.

The more United team by 9

If UTD's big guns perform & stay out of foul trouble, they win. Simple as that.

If Adelaide are clicking & running & gunning (& getting UTD in foul trouble), they win. Simple as that.

I'm not a fan of late roster additions, at the expense of cutting someone from the playing roster OR making the bench players feel like they aren't good enough. Suuuuuurely that must create some fear, disharmony or dent confidence. No coincidence that Brissy & Sydney have dropped a few games since making late (& unnecessary IMO) roster changes.

Now is it UTD's turn to slump with the addition of another unnecessary player?

Whilst I'm cheering for UTD, I'm thinking Adelaide may run away with this one.

Coach Joey clearly has some strengths, eg, develop players, play entertaining game style, win plenty of games..

So, does it just, in the end, come down to him not having:

1) the complete character of a successful leader (skills and personality)? He has some elements, but not enough?

E.g.,
Petulance/aggression when things not going his way,

Too willing to put blame elsewhere, etc.

Or,

2) does he just not have the competitive nouse- he just doesn't understand what is needed to take the Sixers to the championship?

Yes, lots of you think he's great.

He will likely finish his sixth season as coach with zero championships, surely time to review the position.

They are going to need big dollars to keep Sobey, Johnson is signed, Drimic hasn't really stood up and very streaky shooter. Froling is an asset but needs a coach of discipline to keep him in check and stop telling the world how good he is when he’s shown glimpses but far to inconsistent and gets caught out defensively. Deng always seems to do ok to good but doesn’t get much time, has potential. Moore will be good import and Wiley is fine but again needs strong coach. Not sold on any of the rest.

I'm torn on Wright - I think he is mostly a good coach. Within the confines of a tight budget, he has recruited well, developed well, and some (not all) of his XOs are pretty good. For example, I think he has gotten more out of the 9/10th man spots than others would with similar resources.

I just don't get the siege mentality. Is it necessary to foster that 'us vs them' mentality to achieve all the things listed above? I really don't think so - and yet we persist with a petulant, bratty attitude that has come unstuck at the biggest moments. Our inability to cope with big games, grand finals etc. really should have caused some self-reflection before now.

Nobody's perfect and Wright has been a net good for the 36ers, might be time for a change though.

I really dislike Joey's temperament and he doesn't have a roster to counterbalance his personality.

I put Gleeson in a similar category, however the playing group has such mature leadership & workman like qualities in Martin, Cotton, Kay, Norton etc - he get's a way with it. In that Mitch Creek ...massive, massive loss from a leadership viewpoint.

Joey obviously has an outstanding eye for local talent and is pretty loyal which are admirable qualities. However his constant victim mentality and erratic moves are unlikely to see success and it might be best for all if they move on.

Tale of the tape- DJ Kennedy vs BJ Johnson

DJ Kennedy:
16 points
9 rebounds
6 assists
3 steals
1 block
6/13 FG
2 three pointers
Played a key role in his team's 23 point win

BJ Johnson
0 points
2 fouls
0/2 FT
3 fake tough guy moves
1 horrendous 90's haircut
1 post game scuffle instigated
1 bruised ego
Only got on court cos his team was getting blown out
