Would love to know who'd pick Bairstow over Long, or DJ or Kay or pretty much anyone this season?

Randle hasn't been nearly as consistent this year, I think Trimble tops him despite the win/loss record.

PG: Trimble
SG: Cotton
SF: Patterson
PF: Kay
C: Bogut

Are Cotton, Randle, Trimble point guards?

How strict will they be with playing in regular positions?

Could Sobey get picked as a point guard, even though the consensus is he's really better suited as shooting guard? Ie Cotton picked as sg, Sobey as pg, but in reality they’d probably play reversed roles if the team actually played.

Kay could be pf.

Cotton
Sobey
Patterson
Bogut

Only Patterson looks a near certainty. Lots of competition for spots. Another good sign for the league.

In answer to UseTaHoop; 3 outside players and 2 inside players is the official breakdown.

So my guess is:

Cotton
Ware
Trimble
Long
Bogut

In no team on no planet would you play Bogut next to Long, this ain't the NBA, it's the NBL, only room for 1 centre.

Bogut, Long, Brandt, DJ, Hodgson, Jawai, Boone, are centres.

Kay, Wesley, Wiley, Barlow, Wear/Kickert are power forwards, it's not that hard.

Dumb commentators saying DJ could be all NBL team PF, well he hasn't played a single game this year at PF, did play all last season at PF next to Hodgson. It's really not that hard.

Ware should get the nod over Trimble for record, however that is clearly not a consideration for the NBL so Trimble.

If we're going to apply the NBL criteria of 3 outside and 2 inside, then I think you could possibly sub in Long for Kay and Trimble for Patterson.

It's not about selecting a team to play in a match- it's about recognising the best players. So in that regard, no reason Long couldn't be in with Bogut and no reason why you couldn't have 3 small guards.

I think Bogut, Cotton and Ware need to be there- they're the 3 best players on the 3 best teams. Easily the top 3 of the MVP. Outside those 3, there's plenty of options.

Of course you'd never play Long next to Bogut, but FYI this isn't an actual team that will be going out to compete and represent the NBL, its purely all NBL first team which just like many other "First teams" historically allow a bit of flexibility amongst Back Courts and Front Courts.

DJs true position given his size is probably a 5, however given his range can easily stretch to a 4, same can be said for Long. He's just been too dominant this yr for me to omit from the 1st team.

As S1L3NC3R83 correctly pointed out

"3 outside players and 2 inside players is the official breakdown"

I'd be surprised if these 5 arent close to locks across the board. Winning has to be a factor!

2nd 5 would be:

Trimble
Randle
Blanchfield
Wesley
Johnson

3rd team:
Sobey
Newbill
Gliddon
Conklin
Long

I can agree with this, Ware over Trimble due to the wins and clutch play.

I think Sobey has a case to beat Randle for a second team spot.

Randle: 18.7/2.5/3.8
Sobey: 16.2/5.1/5.1

Everyone claiming to of watched Trimble this year but no one mentioning how bad he was at the defensive end over that 14 game skid. Cost them games.

If you think he is a better all round player than Ware then I'm glad you're not running a team. Trimble far more Travis Trice than 1st team all NBL Scottie Wilbiken. High usage rate pg on a god awful team. No arguments with second team for him.

Bogut - Duh
Kay - Most efficient player in the league with the best net rating in the league.
Patterson - Duh
Gliddon - Uber-efficient + defense (Gets in over Trimble because of team success)
Cotton - Hasn't had great shooting %s, but is carrying the highest workload in the league

S1L3NC3R83, you wrote, "In answer to UseTaHoop; 3 outside players and 2 inside players is the official breakdown", as did several others. Is there no "official" spot for a slasher/inside-outside player a la Patterson (thank goodness he was a majority pick)? In fact, the "modern" game is looking more and more like as-many-utility-players-as-you-can-get and a couple of specialists.
And as for Trimble not being as good in the clutch times, I beg to differ. If he's the best clutch-time player on my team, I'll settle with that!
And anyway, Trimble's going to give you 25 to 35 and a bunch of assists and an acceptable amount of defence before clutch time. Further to that, if he's in a team with these other studs, there are'nt going to be too many clutch times, are there? If there is a clutch time, Martin (off the bench) can shut down the other stud while the other 4 keep doing what they do (and as there were no complaints about ANY of the other nominees' defense, I presume that we all agree that they are capable of shuting down their own assignments).

For my team, the only stand out in his position is Patterson. Several other "3's" are terrific but he is the best of them.

PG: out of Ware & Randle
SG: out of Cotton & Trimble
SF: Patterson, (out of Terrico & Blanchfield for second choice)
PF: out of Wesley & Bairstow,
C: out of Bogut & Long,

For the sake of it, I'll throw in Terrico or Blanchfield as second "3's", and there's my first (?) and second (?) teams.

Who would be the best coach for any of the suggested line ups? Personally, I'd like to see Goorjian with that role with Bruce (Palmer) as his AC (fire works all night/pity the refs, who ever they are!). Oh, and BIG Joe as Manager (notice the capital "M"? God, he's good!).

But as the team is all current players, guess the coach should be too.

Bevo may be the best teacher-coach around, but what do these guys need to be
"taught"?

Gleeson. I am not a fan but have to admit he gets results ('cept for current
run).

Joey. Having been an elite player himself, may be great dealing with a team of
elite players with pretty high basketball IQs. Suppose the same goes for

Gaze hasn't won many accolades for his coaching so far

Brasswell and
Kelly but both too inexperienced at HC.

Vickerman and
Lemanis, possibly my choices.

How's that for decision making?

Given the way the team is Actually chosen,
I think it mostly picks itself:

BC: Ware, Cotton, Tremble
FC: Long, Kay.

Now if you wanted to go the traditional route, I would make one tweak:
Ware
Cotton
Patterson
Kay
Long
