Adelaide v Bris-Vegas Jan 12

It's hot, hot, hot in Adelaide and the race for 4th spot is even hotter with Brisbane and Adelaide set to have a go at each other this afternoon.

Perth are under pressure too and could see themselves included in this fight in the next rouse or so if they continue their losing ways.

Brisbane are bouncing along just doing enough at the moment, but they need to do more to secure a finals spot. Adelaide have patches of brilliance dispersed like diamonds in the sands of disappointment that get into the crevices you don't want sand to get into. I'm still trying to work out if Joey is the Joker. A madman with a plan, or just a mad man with a plan.

Today, the battle royale will be served hot and there will be some battles to watch out for. The battle of the Brick Sh!thouses - Hodgson v Frohling. Both young fellows, both built like the proverbial brick. The battle of the Beaus - Cadee v Sobey. Both good looking fellows popular with the ladies, both deadly outside the arc. Then there's the battle of the Beasts - Conger v Patterson. Both deadly around the boards and both able to rip a game apart. Then of course there is Gibbo. He might be coming off the bench these days, but he always seems to find a lazy 10 points against Adelaide.

I've given up tipping. My tip is the kiss of death. Last time these teams met it was Adelaide who beat home team Brisbane by 10, perhaps the away team will win again?

Dropping 2 games behind Perth not an issue at this stage, but not getting a game on NZ could be telling at season's end.

I can picture Jack walking along Glenelg beach, scouring the sands of disappointment to try to find a diamond for the love he’ll never meet.

Anyways, I’m off the bullet train for today. Got sbsviceland on with the slow train experience. Cool stuff for background while you go about your business on a lazy Saturday.

The problem with Adelaide continually complaining about contact is this:

Their whole offensive approach is to generate contact and go at bodies, and they want every bit of contact is a foul. They don't consider what the defence is doing, they just feel contact and say "well hey it's a foul because I was good enough to make contact with a defensive player". It's an entitled mindset imo, and they prey on incompetent refs and the movement of soft officiating in basketball. It's smart but damn it's off-putting. To me, players and refs don't seem to have respect for each other, same goes for refs and coaches

When NBL becomes more prominent over the next few years, specialist basketball commentators will come out of the woodwork.

When basketball becomes more mainstream, there will be more of an effort put toward getting basketball calling right. Fox bosses don't care if the NBL is top shelf, but they make damn sure NRL, AFL, BBL is right.

Give it time, we'll have a lot better product perhaps even as soon as next season when Fox pays to show NBL, not the other way around. If a network is paying for coverage, and paying top dollar, they're more inclined to get it right

Sobey has once again cost the 36ers a game by his poor ball handling in the last quarter. Poor defence against three point shooters, as usual by the team, and not giving the ball to the hot shooters from the third quarter. Froling repeatedly free early in the last quarter after shooting 4/6 three pointers and repeatedly ignored. Conger finally gets the ball after 4:30 in the last quarter and immediately scores. So frustrating to see the same problems each week cost the game.

6ers half court game, particularly under pressure late in games, is amateur at best. No team work, ball movement, purpose off the ball and is this current teams Achilles heel.
Hard to watch at a Pro level. Must have discipline and structure in the half to compliment their great running game, they need to learn an offence or two.
Hero ball under pressure but lacking the heroes.

Very Old - Sobey was the one who turned to ball over and took the poor forced shots in the first 4.5 minutes of the last quarter when the game was lost. Drmic helped him with a few of his choices too. Not the first time either. Not all Sobey's fault of course - there is a coach who either doesn't make decisions or just whinges to the refs. They are highly paid professionals, just need to act like it at times. The good first three quarters were blown away by the poor last quarter, with the game lost in the first half of it. Even Homicide said that Sobey needed to look at the last quarter and learn from it :)

Just got home and I have one thing to say: Where the fuck was Froling in the 4th quarter? He was one of the biggest reasons we won the first three quarters! His defence and boxing out were huge against Brisbane's big frontcourt and his threes were a real problem for their defence too.

Instead, Joey plays small to try to matchup with Brisbane and refuses to change when DJ is exhausted, Patterson is scoring at will and Wiley is giving TeRangi wide open threes after we’d kept him quiet all game!

Got to be the worst coaching I’ve seen from Joey and it’s probably cost us finals this year.

"Even Homicide said that Sobey needed to look at the last quarter" , actually he said the whole game, and I don't rate him as a true judge of a game, either as am observer or a participant.

Moore was absent much of the game, wiley has great effort but little direction, DJ was left to be out-rebounded most of the game, and I think that Joey's "system" has become very chaotic as the season has gone on, I don't know if thats because the players won't execute it, if they don't understand it, or there isn't one or its just " go do it and decide ( read and react) for yourself". but i think more dirction given to the players rather than the officials may be useful.

I agree with everything you just said Very Old. I love our running game, but Joey has never got our guys to consistently recognise opponents weaknesses and exploit them in the half court. We lose so many games because the guys don't have an offensive plan.

Ushiro, I didn’t think Sobey did that much wrong in the early 4th quarter. They were good shots he often makes, he just had a stinker of a shooting night after he shot the lights out last game. So I’m not going to blame him for this one. His D has been pretty good the last two games too.

Brisbane didn’t get many good 3 point looks until the last quarter and that was more to do with everyone sagging off to try to stop Patterson attacking the basket and to help DJ on the boards. Hence why I’m pissed at Joey for leaving Froling on the bench most of the 4th!

Deng and Froling were terrific. Why have them sitting at a crucial time? Again, it's Joey thinking he's smarter than anyone else. I also question what his assistants are doing, or if he just ignores their input?

He's done a lot of great things for Adelaide has Joey. But there's a level of arrogance that exists (check out some of his Facebook posts for proof) that just rubs me the wrong way at times. And today the team paid for it.

DJ's attitude was woeful today and got worse as game went on. Sure Bairstow fouls him constantly and just scrags him but DJ needs to suck it up and get the better of it instead of affecting his game. Should of been subbed off. He was spent and just getting more frustrated. Couldn't compete anymore and got out rebounded after missed foul shots, and then lost the plot mentally, while Froling sits on the bench. Could not work out why Froling wasn't subbed on in the 4th. Deng looked good when he was on for those couple of minutes and then sits for basically rest of game. Conger tried hard and did a good job, while Sobey was MIA offensively. Wiley is terrible defender. Gets lost switching and both him and Moore give their players too much room outside and can't close down outside shot.
At start of game refs were woeful. Hodgsen and Bairstow had tents pitched in the keyway. Missed travels and don't think they even picked up the 8 second violation until crowd and Joey picked them up on it.

I would rather they called the foul too. But the so called referees weren't calling them, can't make them blow the whistle, so he needs to be smarter and start sucking Bairstow in rather than Barstow getting DJ just where he wants him. Maybe today he was just completely spent and hit boiling point. It does amaze me how the refs continually don't recognise what certain players do every single game. Do they not talk about this sort of stuff?

I think that both DJ and Sobey have stepped up considerably in terms of mental toughness in the last 3 seasons, difference is night vs day to me.

Joey failing to add tactical coaching ( situational/immediate focus on 1/2 court or mismatch or if/then/else structures) to the strategic focus ( overall we run, run and play hard switching D ) that he brought with him in the first season, indicates that his own development as a coach has stalled somewhat.
