Choose a 20 man Boomers squad for the World Cup

To go to camp to choose the final 12 for the World Cup.

I would go with:

Simmons
Mills
Bogut
Baynes
Ingles
Delly
Exum
Maker
Bolden
Broekhoff
Landale
Creek
Barlow
Green
Goulding
Humphries
Adel
Jack White
Harry Froling
Grida

Who would be in your 20 man squad?

Would Grida, Froling, Green and White be in squad as contenders, or as development for future tournaments?

I'd want McCarron in there, as he’s flexible and has potential at the international level.

Delly, Simmons, Exum, Sobey, Mills, Goulding, Gliddon, Adel, Green, Broekhoff, Ingles, Creek, Maker, Bolden, Kay, Motum, Baynes, Bogut, Landale, Humphries

Green, Landale & Humphries more there for development. Would love to have Cotton naturalised.

My 12 would be
Delly/Exum
Mills/Broekhoff/Goulding
Ingles/Broekhoff/Creek
Simmons/Bolden/Motum
Baynes/Bogut

Guys that are unlucky to miss out imo
Lisch, McCarron, White, Blanchfield, Cooks, Froling, Johnson, Mathiang

If we are talking 2023 world cup by all means add White, Green, Froling and Grida.

My 21* (if Simmons does not participate) is,

Simmons*, Exum, Dellavedova
Mills, Sobey, Goulding, Gliddon,McCarron
Ingles, Broekhoff, Creek,Adel
Maker,Bolden,Kay, Motum,Bairstow
Bogut, Haynes, Landale,Humphries.

Kay has impressed and is making a strong case for final 12.

Any chance Bryce Cotton could be an Aussie for the 2020 olympics.

And if he is, does he make the squad?

Exum, Dellevadova, McDowell-White
Mills, Green, Sobey, Adel
Ingles, Broekoff, Creek, Noi
Simmons, Bolden, Motum, White, Kay
Baynes, Bogut, Maker, Humphries

Basically the projected squad plus a few fringe guys that deserve the nod (Motum, Creek, Sobey, Kay), and talented young guys for development and to get them in the mens program (WMW, Green, Adel, Noi, White, Humphries).

I think McCarron, Lisch, Johnson, Mathiang, Bairstow etc. guys are a tier below the fringe guys that got in, and Froling, Grida, Landale, Cooks are a tier below the young guys I put in.

Although he isn't in my 20 and hasn't played against men I think Green should be in the conversation.
Needs to get familiar with Boomers program our shooting guard of the future.

Green should be in the squad just to make sure he doesn't blow up and then play for the Americans like Kyrie. Lock him in

If everyone is available...

PG: Simmons, Dellavedova
SG: Exum, Mills, Green, Sobey, McCarron
SF: Ingles, Broekhoff, Creek, Adel
PF: Maker, Bolden, Motum, White, Kay
C: Baynes, Bogut, Landale, Acuil

If Cotton does naturalise, he would force his way in, probably over Sobey or McCarron

RJ Barrett was extremely productive for Canada's mens team before even putting on a Duke uniform. Green's not quite on his level as a prospect but he is a top 10 guy. Also, look at how productive this years rookie class is in the NBA - 18 to 20 year olds can definitely compete against grown men if they're elite talents, which Green is.

I'm not saying lock him in or anything, but I would not be surprised at all if he can be good enough to crack the Boomers squad next year, and if not, by 2020 he has an even better chance to.

The Boomers made a mistake years ago when Ben was 17 and they didn't put him on the team, and he wasn't happy about it. These top prospects are the future, let's see what they can do.

The 20 man squads basically pick themselves. Cotton wont be naturalized by then but if he is he will slot immediately behind Mills and Delly at PG or Mills/Broekhoff at SG.

For what it's worth Captain Jack's line up is mine.

I've not heard anything concrete about naturalizing but I definitely think he'd have to be a chance to do so given his long contract here. If I were Lemanis I'd be talking to him about the possibility of putting on a Boomers singlet at the Olympics as well. After Mills we're a little thin at that spot, relying on Gouldings, Sobeys, etc and combo guys like Broekhoff and Ingles to slot in there to play spot minutes. Cotton on a full strength Boomers team would just be another weapon on a team filled with weapons.

Olympics or not, it would be a smart move. Without the pressures of being an import, he could play professionally till he's 35+.

Froling is more versatile offensively than both of those guys but Landale is a better defender. I think Humphries is 3rd in that trio. Dont just read the headlines of the G League and assume Isaac is all of a sudden playing way better than last year - he has developed but not out of sight.

I would start with the no brainer picks for the World Cups and then select the rest of the squad who could play a role off the bench.

No Brainers Starters
Simmions plays the 1 on offense and 2/3/4 on defense
Baynes 4/5
Mills plays the 2 on offense and defends the 1.
Ingles 3

No Brainer picks
Exum combo guard
Delly 1
Brockoff 3
Bolden stretch 4
Maker 5/4

That's leaves
Two 4/5
One 3
One 2

4/5 list
Bogut
Mathiang
Motum
Landale

3 list
Creek
Adel

2
Goulding
Green

We have enough handle in the no Brainer picks.

Dellavedova - Cavaliers
Exum - Jazz
Creek - G League
Adel - Cavaliers
Broekhoff - Mavericks
Ingles - Jazz
Simmons - 76ers
Bolden - 76ers
Baynes - Celtics
Bogut - Sydney Kings
Maker - Bucks

Reserves
Sobey
Goulding
Motum
Landale

I think both those above lists are pretty on the money. I think it's always good to take a pure shooter to these type of comps.

Would consider more of a specialist like Gliddon, Goulding, Madgen, maybe even Kickert to throw in off the bench a few minutes a game, over an Adel who's skill set is similar to those already in the squad.

Players in that 11-12 position are often better to be more specialised players as they aren't really needed unless it's in a particular role. Can see a use for Creek as an undersize small ball run and gunner big. Would use the 12th spot as a shooter/ or bulldog defender guard (prime Martin).

Simmons/ Delly
Patty/ Exum/
Ingles/ Gliddon (or similar)
Broekhoff/ Bolden/ Creek
Baynes/ Thon/ Bogut

Would be my guess. Though when you start to lay it out like that, I wonder if both Bogut and Thon are needed. Baynes, Thon and Bogut are pretty much exclusively centres in FIBA ball, and I see Bolden as a bit more of a versatile version of Thon.

Maybe room for another 2/3 (Adel/ Sobey/ Goulding) instead.

The 10 NBA guys are a lock for 20 man squad.
Simmons
Mills
Dellavedova
Exum
Baynes
Maker
Adel
Broekhoff
Ingles
Bolden

Throw in Creek, Landale,Bogut and Cooks. Green a possibility but more for 2023 I think.

The last 6 spots are a bit more open from the following
Motum
Sobey
Goulding
Gliddon
Humphries
Kay
Mathiang
McCarron
Green
Jack White.

Not much spoken about Cameron Bairstow, I know he had a serious injury setback, however at his best he may be worthy of the 20 man squad.

What is pleasing is the quality of our up and comers, very handy list indeed...

I give Bairstow 0% chance. I'd take 20 players in the NBL over him.

Not even particularly knocking him as a player, he's solid. But he can't add much to a Boomers team.
