Interesting read on those imports. A lot of Div 1 college talent there and no duds by the looks of it. Livingston looks to be the only one with questions as to whether his impact will be enough.

So only 14 out of a possible 28 imports have been signed/announced so far? That is a low number seeing we are now into January. As each years goes on, it seems more and more clubs are willing to sacrifice losses early in the years (due to imports not being here) just to save some $$$.

Someone mentioned low key signings to watch, and based on what i've read already the ones i would be interested in seeing

Travis Durnin at Mandurah - can he continue the climb from last season.
Jordan Wellsteed at East Perth - likely to get much more minutes, MIP candidate?
Ask Litterick at Perth - if rumours true everyone leaving redbacks, he'll be more a focus of the offence than he was at Stirling.
Wani Swaka at Stirling - best of the bunch.

According to nbl website CS is av 13.72 min a game this season
He is averaging 7.4 min per game this calendar year (last 4 games)
So if he continues to be out of favour with Gleeson and his mins remain low , he will defiantly be under 14 min a game if that is the cut off for restricted player

At the conclusion of NBL round 13, all the SBL clubs were supplied the official NBL Restricted Player list. And yes, Clint Steindl is classed as a restricted player for the 2019 SBL season.

However an SBL club does have the option of requesting an exemption if the circumstances favour the request, and this happened a couple of years ago in the case Corban Wroe and the Stirling Senators.

I will say though that the Corban Wroe example was quite a unique case, and it was also when the 'minutes played' threshold was 10mins per game - it is now 14.

When I look back at the Corban Wroe example, and I compare with Clint Steindl's situation/season, I honestly can't see any grounds where the SBL Commission would grant an exemption. I know all of the SBL Administrators (being one myself), and I'm quite certain none of them would have the arrogance to even attempt it.

And that's why I'm sure this is just rumour mongering.

Reply #730048 | Report this post

koberulz
Years ago

Wasn't the argument with Wroe that there were several games where he played zero minutes, which therefore didn't count as games when determining his average? With those games included he dropped below the threshold.

He was also a DP, not a rostered player, wasn't he?

Reply #730049 | Report this post

Lukosius
Years ago

Correct and correct. In addition he played significant minutes when both Wildcats point guards (Martin and Kenny) were out injured.

Steindl's situation (compared to Wroe) is like chalk and cheese, and if it was our club thinking of doing something like this, it would be ruled out immediately. The grounds to request an exemption are just not there, and to be honest it would look a bit embarrassing (and desperate) if an SBL club even considered it.

Second import for Lightning is Mike Wright 6-1" GUARD from NW Nazarene, player under coach Dave Daniels in Canada. Interesting Lakeside going with 2 imports at PG, maybe Isenbarger moves to a SG roll? Armour backup PG?

sort of makes sense as Vinci, Bell, Garbellini all gone.

Wright**
Isenbarger**
Shervill
Vigor
Prue
__________
Armour
Mackenzie
Lee
Paleschi

Very thin team, better off with a SF import IMO.

Lightning have had a long history of playing with a 3x guards on the court alongside two bigs, and won championships with that type of line-up. The Luke Payne days were an example of that.

Expect to see a starting line-up of....

Prue
Vigor
Import
Armour

Giants have released their squad on their website. They have some good additions that should see them challenge for a playoff spot. A little bit of research comes up with some interesting info.

Marquis Salmon
Big time rebounder from Texas Southern. Had a 23 rebound game which was the highest single game haul in division 1 in 2017/18.

Jay Bowie
We all know he's a quality swingman with plenty of experience in this league.

Manylok Malek
Rebounder and shotblocker from the QBL who had a tryout with the Cairns Taipans.

David Humphries
Swingman from SA. Four years at college including the last two at Loyola Marymount.

Fletcher Klatstorny
Plenty of SBL experience at Mandurah plus a year in college.

Michael Gardner
Unknowm Kiwi who was in the junior Tall Blacks team.

You add Brandon Holloway to that group at the PG spot and that's a very handy line-up.

Coaching might not see that team make playoffs. Jay Bowie is a top 5 import in this league, no doubt - proven. Salmon, yeah looks decent, but might be swimming against the current with a very new squad.

[Julian Pesava to redbacks, he's been killing it in Germany. It will be interesting to see how he goes. #gingergang]

In the regionalliga. Not to sound like a d**k but its literally the 4th division. They have German BBL, then ProA which we've had imports like Jordan Wild and Lee Roberts play in, then ProB and then Regionalliga. So he'll be good but to say his killing it is a bit overkill.

Either that's fake news re the Cougars import, or they have something up their sleeve. Can't see their starting bigs being Field and Holmes. I reckon they will be getting an import big or have picked up an Aussie big somehow.

Did someone say Curtis Washington?

"Forde apparently has promised he is going young with this team. No money to get Wildcats players so putting faith on Murphy, Donlagic and Berry to become the next batch to lead the team. Sunday Dech also to return. Mentioned they'll go two big guys for imports. "

Is Murphy the real deal?

'It's not hard. Get of yr arses and raise some funds' ... cmon mate!

... it must be a bit easier to raise funds (to max the sbl sal cap) with 6 paid staff and 500++ domestic teams.
a new shiny stadium and supportive and large local council would also help a bit i reckon

but not all clubs are that lucky n most clubs out there have bands of volunteers flogging themselves doing what you simply pay people to do.

I think clubs are well and truly off their arses and maybe need to be respected a little more for them competing in the way they do . despite having far less than u ... esp cause you keep losing to them!

Do you think Joondalup just fell in to their facilities and their 6 staff? 10 years ago they were on the bones of their ass like a lot of SBL clubs and were being run by 1 stadium manager and 1 part timer. The rest all volunteers, trying to make the best of the shabby old stadium - like most SBL Clubs.

Yes, they have a great catchment area but a lot of clubs do, and for them to have what they have now was due to a lot of hard work and investing in people that could get them there and building great relationships with the City of Joondalup.

One thing I have to agree with though, is your arrogance hashtag... if only they could show a little humility, it would go a long way.

And instead of using all that work to develop basketball players and add to the overall talent level and entertainment quality of the league they have a joke of a WABL program and just purchase players from other locations.

Clubs with new facilities/upgrades or pending:
Willetton
Joondalup
Stirling
Mandurah
Rockingham
Cockburn (pending)

Clubs that have paid staff:
Willetton
Joondalup
Stirling
Mandurah
Rockingham
Cockburn
Perry Lakes

Clubs that are generally seen to be professional:
Willetton
Joondalup
Stirling
Rockingham
Perry Lakes

join the dots. you need to invest to improve.

I would be adding Mandurah into the professional group.
have done an outstanding job in the last 2-3 seasons to turn around a large debt and are moving forward rapidly.
have a great facebook social media forum and would have to be up there with one of the largest domestic competions in the state.
keep up the good work Mandurah magic.

so the common denominator of being seen as 'professional' is having lots of available courts and a huge domestic competition.
They are the ones that can invest and improve.

its sad that SBL has become more about $$ spend and great recruitment rather than developed talent and loyalty . players shopping themselves around and clubs trying to keep up!

its becoming very bought not built

Reply #731812 | Report this post

Disagree all you want, Stirling brought in Josh and Kristy, got 4 new courts and radically changed Stirlings junior program.

Joondalup brought in Cam and Ryan, who lobbied local government hard and got new courts, rebrand etc

Redbacks brought in Christian and are moving to a brand new facility in South Perth 2021.

Willetton invested in a CEO, new courts being built this year.

Rockingham brought in Warren, and he has a sponsor list longer than Big Mac added ingredients

Even Cockburn has invested in Tyrone. New courts on the way.

Invest in human resource - reap rewards.

That isn't a dig at the tireless volunteers at smaller Associations, they move heaven and earth to make their programs work. It is up to their disconnected boards to start waking up pay their staff who have been taken for granted for too long. The sport has evolved past that. East Perth and Kalamunda have amazing catchment areas; no reason why they can’t keep up.

Anon 860 - thats a great story - but you are off the mark with your facts.

But well done for suggesting that the smaller clubs invest in human resources. Join their boards and put your nuts on the line to make it happen.

To call the Magic professional is laughable, probably more likely completely insane. Whoever wrote that would be one of their "purple circle" of idiots who all sit around in a circle and break their arms patting each other on the back. Take a look at the results of the teams- wabl is a disaster and the Msbl has been the laughing stock of the league for many years now.

Professional.. that's a bit of a stretch haha
