Melbourne v Adelaide, Boxing Day

It's 1 v 5 in the Boxing Day game. Melbourne, who are hot favourites to go back to back this season, face up against the team that challenged them last season. The big question today is whether Dean Vickerman will crack a smile. Vickerman, who reminds me of the father of a pretty teenage girl swamped by pocked face suitors driving hotted up shagging wagons, has plenty to smile about with his team in fine form and seemingly unable to lose, regardless of the conditions.

The Sixers are in the pack of Perth, Brisbane, Illawarra and New Zealand battling for 3rd and 4th spot. Wins over Melbourne and Sydney crucial for final ladder positions.

Melbourne are winning, but they are not smashing the opposition. This competition is even this year and it is the small 1%ers that separates those smiling with a win vs those not smiling (Vickerman excepted) Maybe he's just thinking about how much his wife has spent at the Boxing Day Sales "Oh, but think of how much I've saved!"

But back to the game. Matchups are good, with both teams ahead in different areas. Melbourne lead in the floppiness factor, but Sixers are better in transition.

With everyone having a bit of Christmas cheer, I'm predicting a total score of close to 200 points today, but sadly for Sixers fans, I think Melbourne might just sink one or two more threes to help themselves to Christmas seconds. Hopefully that might at least get a smirk from Vickerman.

I could see Melbourne controlling the tempo of this game and making it a low scoring grind out affair and if so the odds will be heavily in their favour. As much as I'd love to see us slay the beast on their big day I just can't see it happening.

Lopsided free throw shooting can be complained about if it is a result of inconsistent calling of particular types of fouls or soft calls going one way and not the other.

An aggressive fast paced transition offensive style is going to attract more fouls from the defence and more free throws.

When Adelaide plays its uptempo style and doesn't slow it down or commit charges, it’s highly likely and expected they’ll draw more fouls.

A team that gets the ball to the low post most of the time is likely to draw more fouls down there then a team who spends most of their time shooting threes.

Basic logic which appears beyond that of many lol

There is no free throw issue. Adelaide simply shoots many more in the paint than United and they set more screens and shoot more 3's. The stats show this clearly. If those two stats are similar hen maybe you have a right to compain on behalf of United but in this case sorry, no case to be heard.

Jack Toft, the no charge circle only comes into consideration when the offensive player is airborne attempting to pass or shoot. DJ was not airborne hence it does not apply, normal contact principles do.

Can't believe Joey had Doyle on in last 2 mins. Not up to the pressure at that time, and Moore passing the ball up the court was a brain fade. Moore again misses both free throws at the death. Would of put Adelaide up by 8 if he made them. Did the same against the Hawks.

36ers too good when it mattered.
Deliberate ploy of Moore(player of match for mine) attacking Goulding off the dribble repeatedly came up trumps.Johnson going to hoop also a factor.
Melbourne Goulding, Kennedy and McCarron could not back up Ware who was sensational in keeping them in it down stretch.

Boone averaging 23 min per game.

To compare, Bogut's avg is 30 min per game.

Adelaide are in a position where they need to go on a run if they want to make 4th spot. Third win in a row at the moment, Breakers twice at home and Illawarra away, realistically the next three matches are must wins if Adelaide want to give Brisbane, NZ or Hawks a real battle for position.
