Adelaide v Illawarra Nov17 Game Thread

Afternoon game today and on 9Go as well.

Sixers are on that slippery slope battling Cairns for a lump of coal to go in the trophy cabinet at season's end. The export of one import, means a new one arrives and excited Sixers fan will be done the old Conger line around the stadium.

Illawarra are stumbling along, with 1 from 4, but their last 3 losses were against Perth, Melbourne and Sydney (who seem to have turned a corner and making a charge from the rear). The secret on the NBL is the bench. For Adelaide, the X factor is Deng and he has not had the season he had last season. For Hawks, the X factor is the ever young Anderson who must get blood transfusions from a 10 year old boy to stay so vibrant..

This is Adelaide's game to lose, both teams are hungrier than a fat kid on a diet. If Adelaide loses this one, Joey might as well just start Adam Doyle for the rest of the season.

I think Adelaide should win but how entertaining would it be watching Doyle start every game.

The Sixers are now entering the soft part of their schedule over these next 11 games until the brutal final 8 game stretch of the season so it's really do or die time now. Give Conger the ball and let him go to work.

Why are Adelaide players so damn dumb?

Froling unsportsmanlike kills the sorely needed momentum, Majok makes a stupid foul to gift an extra free throw.

Adelaide looked a bit disorganised in that first half. Out of control and poor shot selection. Improved a bit in the last few minutes, when Wiley stepped up. Probably result of Conger coming in to the lineup.

Why is Sobey coming off the bench?

I like how Bevo has kept them competitive, but it feels like they're just making up the numbers. Don't draw crowds and don't feel like they're going to be able to put together a championship competing roster in the future with the way the league is improving and the money being spent. Wouldn't be surprised if they are out if the league in a year or two especially with the SE Melb team coming in.

Cairns aren't in a great position either. Unfortunately I don't see small teams like these two having a place in the NBLs future.

I know people get a bit nostalgic about the Hawks being the last foundation team left in the NBL but with how poor their crowds have been for more than a few years now with the Phoenix coming in next season I would actually prefer to see the league remain an 8 team league (play each other a perfect four times a season) and a team drop out which if it were to happen should be the Hawks.

Conger will play better, bloke just stepped off the plane....and Joey will pull the team together with the new mix of players and I believe Adelaide will definitely be competitive against Perth, Melb & Sydney.

Lets just speak the honest truth. The Hawks looking terrible with
NO leadership from the imports. Jackson the once MVP can't keep up
with other import guards in the NBL and his lack of adjusting of
holding the Hawks together shows he's good, when he is playing
with talent like when he was at the breakers.

I feel sorry for Bevo because he's been working with a shoestring
budget not able to go get legit imports who would bring the Hawks
from the brinks and be in the top 4. He's having to deal with
players like AJ, who once was a potential high nba draft pick
and now to a player who plays with zero emotions and zero heart!

The only positive is..there are a couple talented young players on
the team that bring energy every game. But i wont be surprised if
they go to another team next season if the opportunity presents it
self.

As far as the Hawks ownership group. Someone need to inform them
and Mat Campbell a shoestring budget in 2018 won't be enough to
bring a championship to Wollongong.

Yeah 8 teams playing each other 4 times is 28 games. I'd much rather have 10 teams playing each other 3 times for 27 games. But sadly the NBL wants to kill off the Hawks and Taipans which is a shame and a mistake IMO.

I have often heard chat that Bevo is difficult to work with, but nothing specific as to what it is.

Like at Perth I heard he would never compromise, and always wanted everything his way or the highway. And Nick Marvin said, your a good coach, but you are not a good club person, so a change was made. Not usre what more he could have wanted his way at Perth.

Not sure what happened with the whole Cody Ellis situation.

Some people are just difficult and they often get moved on for that alone.

It is, and I manually recorded the 11.30-12pm timeslot just in case, but anyone who recorded just by highlighting the game and hitting "record" would've been screwed, as would anyone who just wanted to tune in and watch the game. Not everyone is like us and knows the fixtures inside and out.

As it was I couldn't get to my TV until 12.05, so I was hoping the guide was right...ended up watching the first half on delay and using half time to catch up to live though.

I missed nothing, but still a pretty major cock-up.

I see no reason why we cant make the playoffs. Conger was sloppy today but he's a big upgrade for us.

Drmic hitting shots from the outside is a huuuuuge key for us. Otherwise teams can just play a zone against us and we're a bit stuffed. Need some guys keeping the opposition honest on the perimeter in order to allow the likes of Wiley, Conger and Sobey to slash to the basket.

We're def not on the level of Melb and prob Syd but I'm not too worried about any other side.

Hawks have gone for a throwback line-up when everyone else is looking to spread the floor. I suspect its part budget, part strategy to be different. In terms of aj it is no surprise he has looked since the floor spacing has vanished, lish, penny, forman, conread etc meant there was always space inside. Now he shares the post with elbows and the opposition defence because ced and jett may as well be shooting at a tea cup from 3. See last year and perth with tokoto in the back end of the season to see how bad a problem just one non shooter is

Agreed Joshua - that was the win they needed to stop the rot and restore confidence. Conger was a little rusty scoring wise but the extra length he brings is already helping our defence. At the moment, the problem with repetitive matchups is caused by the ridiculous fixturing, not by the fact that there are 8 teams playing each other 4 times.

Bevo has a long history of not being a team player *within* the club. He couldn't work with the Perth management, nor previous hawks management and now, the current hawks managment. He will make it to the end of the season but I’d bet his isn’t at the hawks next season and given his growing off court reputation probably unlikely to be another NBL club.
