Cavs fire coach Ty Lue

Yahoo:

After an 0-6 start to the 2018-19 NBA season, Cleveland Cavaliers general manager Koby Altman fired head coach Tyronn Lue this morning. Assistant coach Larry Drew will take over at least for the short-term. Cavaliers players are reportedly not happy about Lue's firing.

If I were one of the vets I wouldn't be happy either, because it signals the young guys are going to start getting burn.

The organization is just a train wreck and has been for years... which pains me as a Cavs fan. If anything it adds to LeBron's legacy that he was able to make the front office look almost competent with all the finals appearances.

Once LeBron left it should have been rebuild mode in the offseason - move Love/TT/JR/Hill, let Hood walk, sack Lue, and play Cedi/Sexton/Zizic 32+ minutes a game and hope for the #1 pick.

Makes that decision to lock up Kevin Love for the next 5 years look even stupider plus Larry Drew is refusing to accept the interim coach job unless they give him a new contract lol

Agreed Angus.

The rhetoric was that they wanted to make the playoffs (for some reason) and dwell in mediocrity, hence they re-signed Kevin Love. Then the GM tells Lue to take Korver and Smith out of the rotation in favor of the young guys.

If they want to win, don't they want their best players on court? If they wanted to lose, why did they re-sign Love to a 5 year deal? I don't understand what their long-term plan is.

They'll eventually trade Love sooner than later, makes him more appealing that hes locked up in a new contract, similar to what happened with Griffin. Should fully tank though, have Sexton as a good building block, along with Nance whos a handy young player. Rest of them can get some 2nd rounders, maybe even a late 1st from a contender if they need a shooter like Korver.

Love's on $22mil a year until he's 35. That doesn't sound too appealing.

No way a team is giving up a first round pick, even #30, for Korver.

Hahaha trade Love. He is a salary dump. No one wants to be paying a 33/34-year-old who can't guard the pick and roll or protect the rim $28M. Are you crazy? The 2018/19 season is the only one on Love's contract that might approximate decent value.

He was Lebron's puppet and nothing more!

It should have happened before pre season but 0-5 gave them an excuse

The reason love was re-signed is because he is now an asset on the books. There will be some team who thinks they are one move away and try and trade for him.

Asset sure, but there'd definitely be wariness taking on a contract of that length.

I think Love could really blossom in the right place. Imagine if Pop got his hands on Love... Still, best bet is a contender thinks Love puts them over the top and puts together a package. Hard to see happening though.

If you're a contender looking for a piece to put you over the top, can you really believe it's a guy who's looked like Love has in so many games against Golden State? The Warriors are the team you have to get over and Love is good, but he's pretty much the antithesis of the sort of player you need if you want to cause the Warriors problems.

But I don't know. Houston were in a pretty good place and shredded it to bring in Melo. So maybe the Warriors induce sufficient panic in other teams that someone would pay Love's salary even though they strongly suspect he isn't the answer. Hard to see them giving up much in return though.

Rachel Nichols:

"It's understandable why Dan Gilbert may not want to give Larry Drew the contract he wants considering he's still paying Lue, his predecessor David Blatt and his predecessor Mike Brown."
So, maybe they should bring back Blatt and not pay him extra...

Oh wow, that is nuts. Although front offices only have themselves to blame for writing irresponsible contracts like that.

Crazy situation in Cleveland.

How inept is a front office publicly announcing who their new interim head coach is without asking the guy first?

Associate Head Coach Larry Drew has been named interim head coach.

Larry Drew said emphatically he is not #Cavs interim coach. Talks ongoing. Said acting coach more accurate. Now without contract restructuring more a substitute teacher
