Joey ... then what?

I'm not a Sixers fan but I have to admit that Joey does a good job in developing talent:
Sobey, Creek, DJ, Hodgson, ...

But, for these players to take the next step up, let’s say playing for Australia in the World Cup, is Joey the guy to get them there or do they need to move?

Looking at Sobey, for example. He’s been very good for a few seasons now, but should he move in order to become a regular Boomer? He doesn’t need to go to the NBA to become a Boomer, but what’s his best option? Another NBL team and coach? A tough coach in Europe? Somewhere below G-League in the US or Canada?

Same goes for Goulding, McCarron, Gliddon, and a few others - what do they need to do to become the best they can be? Perhaps they need to play for Joey for a couple of seasons?

Thoughts?

Based on Sobey's current uptrend he'd not get better development anywhere else in the world outside of the competition and resources of the NBA.

Locally, Sobey will be best off staying put and getting minutes/opportunities with Adelaide. If he has a strong season, he could tackle Goulding for that Boomers spot. Or maybe Exum.

it's funny how Sobey seemed to struggle (relatively) in Big V Div 1, and then continued straight back where he was in the NBL/ higher competition.

Maybe something about the game style of the higher levels? Spacing and system?

You want Sobey to go elsewhere and Goulding, McCarron, Gliddon to play under Joey. Weird man, weird.

I don't WANT it, Anon - I'm just asking what others think. Do players plateau under Joey? If they do, what are their options?

Conversely, do people think Joey could make Gpulding or McCarron or ... better players who are suitable for being in the Boomers long-term, instead of consistently being fringe or potential Boomers?

Joey has helped Sobey go from an unwanted DP at Cairns to being in NBA chat.

Creek from 36ers to Brooklyn

Only NBL related guy that has been in Boomers of late, off the top of my head, is Damien Martin.

Does OP even know history? Joey gave Goulding his NBL chance as a DP with Brisbane.

I think Wright is a good _identifier_ of NBL talent, unlike most other coaches who don't seem to bother and would rather poach from poorer NBL clubs.

What Joey does is identify NBL talent well from the players who don't go to college and stay home in Australia. So from the start you are capped as in theory the best go to college. So with this context players like Creek, Sobey and Goulding have done exceptionally well given their opportunity and I think it's amazing now we have a thread for these players expecting even more. This is what I give Wright a lot of credit for.

"Capped" as in talent level of the left over talent level.

what did I even just read?

"What Joey does is identify NBL talent well from the players who don't go to college and stay home in Australia"

joey seems to be awful at picking local talent. look at his DP's (I'm talking about Larkins) Meanwhile, he has identified and developed Deng and Drimc from college and is looking to do the same with Froling and McVeigh

#063 agreed he has too much loyalty to Teys, Larkins, etc. but way to miss the overall point.

Is it loyalty as much as a tight budget?

Larkins wouldn't be getting paid as a DP, so yes, loyalty to rubbish.

Teys and Larkins won't see any meaningful minutes this season relax.

Only joey can get the best outta sobey, ridicous three to suggest players of the ilk of sobey and creek need to leave to get better. Track creeks career progression last half of the season he was the best player in the league including imports. Guys an absolute beast but without a reliable jump shot I can’t see him making much of an impact in the nba, hope I’m wrong though

Joey is good at identifying talent, and building a competitive team with what he's got.

He's also an unstable, narcissistic, whackjob. So, you know, swings & roundabouts.
