Anybody know who is officially a development player this season?

Purely from the eye test and being new to the NBL I would say Teys and Doyle?

Can you really have a go at those two when Larkins has been around for five years?

Larkins and especially Hoffman as DPs is pretty laughable.

Very unfair on teys and Doyle. Class above.

Nah you're right, Teys was a class above everyone in the Premier League grand final.

Joey usually has some Qld guys in as DPs.

Looks like he was 4th in scoring to me.

McDaniel and Daly might have been handy DPs, both locals.

"Looks like he was 4th in scoring to me."

No idea why I thought he was top. Still 4th isn't too bad.

Every premier league team would gladly have teys and Doyle como. Solid year good prep for nba. Teys is a genuine do what is needed no frills player. Every nbl team needs reliable role player team first mentality.

Yep, very good Premier League players. Above that?

I believe its:

Mike Harris
Jamaal Malieto
Akol Deng
Lewis Thomas
Larkins
Hoffman
Sam Johns

Not sure who's an official DP and who's a training body but they're who I've seen from photos.

243 - Yea Mc would be an extremely handy a DP but he is not a DP at Melbourne. He is contracted!

McDaniel is a DP. Sure contracted but still a DP.

He would have a DP contract like everyone else, but he's not part of the 11-man roster.

Jamaal Malieto or Jamaal Robateau?

Akol Deng, a 6 4 power forward that can't jump

Akol did play a great 5 mins in the PL final!

Akol is only there to grab rebounds. Normally his own misses. Without checking stats I'm guessing he averaged about 8 missed layups and 8 offensive boards a game for Forestville.

Normally don't question Joey but having the likes of Hoffman and Akol there really is surprising. Not even average players in premier league and not prospects for nbl, Hoffman didn't even play last year and when given minutes he sucked for a team dying for contributions. Doubt he would make many other teams, bit of a kym Taylor.

Adelaide just not bothered with attempting to identify, look after and develop good quality DPs?

If so, a reflection of the culture under the current coach.

Joey likely doesn't bother too much with local DP's because he recruits top young guys out of college instead.

To be honest, I'd rather he do that than try to develop DP's who probably won't make an NBL squad anyway. At best you would get a Doyle who really isn't up to NBL standard.

From what I can tell:

All the NBL calibre players are at college. Local DPs out there seem to be guys that are going to be good training guys at this stage. Takes a bit of talent, good head and also the available time to train everyday. Who knows though Joey seems to be a really good player developer so even these guys might get an NBL gig eventually.

There are many routes to a professional career. College for many and then contract or DP. Best examples Madgen Sobey both spent times as DP's
Straight to NBL from AIS Newley Ingles Creek Jawai Hill now Grieder others?. many have short NCAA stints DJ, Wilson and now Frolig and McVeigh - many others. Just DP Adnam, Acouth? others? Having quality DP's adds depth to squad. Smith-Milner last year played a role in Melbournes success. Austalia produces great young basketballers. Adelaide could certainly do better in this area. Lack of energy in recruiting or resource or both?

Unless your from QLD you haven't got a chance with Joey to get anywhere as a DP

36ers are one if not the only club that do not pay their DPs , this is prob one of the reason their identity is kept pretty quiet

No money is offered to local dps, so unless you can live at home through the bank of Mum and Dad pretty hard for it to be a suitable choice for those returning from college at 22/23. The requirement to be at training/weights the same as a contracted player makes it pretty tough to have a job at the same time hence the locals are not our best players in the area.
Robateau is a solid get though, had a pretty decent QBL season.

I don't think offering peanuts/nothing to DPs is that insane. There's a solid argument for pushing money towards the main roster and getting the club financial.

And if they're not paid positions, I don't think it's worth the time offering much criticism if it comes down to whoever is willing or able to train for free. Some people are living out of home, working, studying, etc and unable to fit that bill.

Akol is much taller than he looks, 6'4 is a stretch, he's at least 6'6

Interesting we keep persisting with Johns and Larkins as DPs, who clearly aren't ever getting a call up to the main team.

Why the hate? Akol's a good guy and has clearly done something right, or he wouldn't have a DP spot.

Not hating at all. He is a good guy. Doesn't do much more than grab his own misses though.

Johns was all star 5 and lead the league in assists. He also won his second premiership as captain. Ask any coach in the league I bet they take Johns over either of the 6ers guys.

Doyle was second in assists and polled equal Woollacott votes in half the games, but Johns won a premiership so he's a better player.

And if your argument is 'premierships over anything else', how many does Doyle have?
