It is old news he is looking at possibly joining the West Coast Eagles.
I wouldn't say its an issue people are entitled to choose whatever path they want.
Football has too many long term injuries. If your good in basketball you can ply your trade till your mid thirties. That is pretty rare in AFL. You can also play in other leagues off season to earn more.
For a talented athelete sports like Soccer, Basketball can be more profitable and you can potentially play till a much older age.

Bines will make more in his first season with West Coast than his entire SEABL career, and that's about the highest level in basketball he'd reach.
The base is around $90k plus game payments of $1-3k depending on the level, so good luck to him.

Of course this isn't an issue, the NBL has DPS up until the age of 25 so if ex basketballers aren't on AFL lists at 21-22 then that it plenty of time to become reaccustomed to basketball again and another point is besides Terrence Ferguson (I don't think Americans should count in this argument) was Joe Ingles the last teenager to make an impact on an NBL court so these Basketballers turning to footy is in due because NBL teams aren't giving teenagers a substantial role and if they are that talented and have that much potential then the NBA is a far greater goal and college basketball.
I don't think we want to lose anyone to footy but the risk/reward is heavily favoured towards footy for its pay so who can blame them?
Basketball will get them back

The biggest challenge in Aussie basketball is the lack of a pathway for our juniors , whilst the Australian level players make headlines when they head to the AFL there are plenty of others that give up and chase the AFL dream given the money on offer. How can we retain young Aussie ballers when they have to move overseas to pursue their dream
Just can't compete with the $'s in football.
We had a 16 year old who was a dead cert to play SBL, however once he was aligned to a WAFL club - they pressured him to commit to football alone. We even tried to get him back into the fold for the State Champs in summer but Claremont did not want him to participate and instead had him on a program to strengthen him ahead of colts.
Talking to his dad, you only have to be an above average footballer to make a good second income playing WAFL or country football. At the time when I looked at our SBL team, very few were making anything above token $'s.
I think the AFLW is going to eventually become enemy number 1 to stealing talent.
