Whoops a day early!

WSBL Playoffs 2018 - Quarter Finals

So we are now at the business end of the season with the top 8 locked in, here is this weekend's preview.

Perry Lakes @ Lakeside Friday

The defending champs limped into the finals despite a 12 point loss to Stirling last round. The champs are led by Lynx wing Toni Farnworth (18ppg 8 rebs) and former Opal post player Nat Burton (15ppg 12 rebs). However the losses of Emma Clarke, Jeffers, Pisconeri and O’Sullivan has left the team with little scoring options out of the big 2. The Hawks come up against a red hot Lakeside team who have two bigs in Grant and Roscoe that can handle Burton on the inside. Hawks will struggle to slow wings Swaggmeyer and Fipps who will have a night out if the Hawks sit in zone. Farnworth will need to score 30+ like she did in round 5 to even give this team a chance.

Lakeside to win by 25.

Senators @ Perth Friday

Redbacks went 2-0 in the regular season both wins by 20+. This series however will not be a walk over for Perth with the Senators on a current 4 game winning streak. Jas Martin (14ppg) has been in red hot form last few games and will go head to head with Mikaela Pirini. Land (14ppg) v Standish (20ppg) will also be a battle going a long way to who decides this series. If Stirling can keep Dyer quiet and force Standish into contested 3s then they have a chance to pinch a win in game 2.
Perth are tough at home and will get game 1. By 15.

Mandurah @ Rockingham Saturday

Now this is a series, Mandurah are a far better team now that they are whole and one can imagine how dominant the season could have been with Boag added to the lineup. Series split 1-1. Rocko are led by the import pair D’lesha Lloyd (23ppg) and Taneisha Harrison (20ppg) and DPOTY candidate Maddy Allen. The loss of Bourne cannot be understand both sides of the ball and this loss makes the team a little shakey going into this match up. Mandurah are lead by Anita Brown who has been the form player of the league in the last 12 games, her match up against Lloyd will be huge. The Magic’s Palusna could very well decide the series, she is a gifted big and will clog up the middle forcing them into a perimeter game, She will give Allen all the shots in world outside 3 feet. Magic have vets in Milo, Bree Klastourney and Halleen who know how to win finals.

Im calling an upset with Mandurah taking game 1.. By 6.

Kalamunda @ Willetton Saturday
A 4 v 5 matchup is just as close as their respective ladder positions. Willetton took the series 2-0 both games by 10 and 11 points. Tigers have a balanced scoring line up with Payne (14ppg) leading the way and 5 other players scoring 8 or more points. Hepburn has been a good mid season addition and Tigers will need her and Norwood to slow the front wall of Rintalla (19ppg) and Edwards. The key matchup for Tigers is who will get the job on Ciabattoni (20ppg) if its Kelly can she slow her down enough to get the series.
Tiger on home court by 10.

Wasn't their game style that helped them improve. They finally had some talent. Two legitimate imports and a very good young big man were the reason they improved. That game style won’t ever win them games if they don’t have the players to make it work. Watch for them to fall back down the rankings if they don’t keep the talent next season.

It's worth comparing the last two seasons win records to see what clubs are improving or which clubs are in decline.
Tigers -7
Wolves +1
Buccs +4
Redbacks +3
Slammers -8
Senators -1
Cougars -4
Hawks +6
Lightning +3
Flames +1
Eagles +1
Giants -3
Suns +3
Magic +1
Tigers, Slammers and Cougars obviously didn’t have the seasons they had hoped for after promising 2017 seasons.
The Hawks and Buccs showing huge progress over the last 12 months and are both now serious contenders.
Interesting to note both the Redbacks and Wolves improved seasons after being grand finalists in 2017.

I give Tigers a decent chance of upsetting Wolves in this series.
If J Bowie is fit and healthy??

I think the Wolves are vulnerable.

Wolves have done incredibly well to be where they currently are.
But the warriors are aging.
Sebba and to lesser extend Trian are not the players the were 12mnths ago.

Seb
2017 - 12pts
2018 - 5pts

Trian
2017 - 18.5pts
2018 -13.5pts

Both Ironmonger and Maxy have also halved their point production.

Billups is likely the league MVP, Huntington having one of his better seasons.
I think Sullivan is serviceable at best but at times he hurts them more then he helps.

Will be interesting series.

For Willetton it comes down to there role players making shots. The games where the Tigers are in games against the top tier teams or beating those teams is when guys like Burston are making plays/shots.

Okay so tigers lost Ray Turner, Slammers lost Tre Nichols, and Cougars lost Billups, all three have been MVP's or on the SBL All-Star Five. Obviously they weren't going to have the same season as their promising 2017 seasons

Hawks adding the 2017 MVP in Jacob Holmes is huge progress, clearly the team was going to be better

Redbacks added Hussey and Mo and Wolves added Billups, its not interesting that they have improved, it was expected

Shouldn't good recruiting be part of continuous improvement? Most teams will lose players from season to season it’s how you adapt to that
Just because those teams lost their star imports doesn’t mean that should be an excuse for not improving

Fuckwit poster of #164 has all three eyes focused on his retrospective crystal ball. Great to tear down an innocent post by someone just giving his thoughts on teams performance. If everything is so obvious and clear to you why would you even need to read what's written here? Negative, smart arse pricks like you make me sick. You are probably one of those who chose to criticize Random and those who contribute positively to this forum and the SBL.

Great article from Liam Hunt on the SBL website.

Fantastic to see him playing for the club he loves and grew up supporting.

I wouldn't say Bucc’s are hated at all..
I think they are probably the most admired team of all rival clubs.

Always great to play against, play hard (mostly fair) they have passion, they have history, always putting solid seasons together year in year out, always seem to attract talent year after year.

Only fault is they do seem to crumble in big games at the pointy end of the seasons..

Will have home court all the way through to the big dance, so hopefully they should get there!!
It could be the year of the BUCC!

they blitzed thru the finals in 2014 and fumbled in the GF to a red-hot Eagles team. This team is better than their 2014 team so ideally they will go 5-0 and win their second 'chip

Its the Buccs championship to lose. They have 4 Americans and three good locals. They have breezed through the regular season with minimal teams giving them a crack. If they don't win the entire thing it is a huge under achievement with the team they have paid for up there.

My only concern is adding 5 players, maybe your 5 best players into one season.

Do the care? Do they buy in? Does it mean to them what it means to the others?

Tigers pulled it off in 2010, bringing in a whole starting 5 so its possible.

Redbacks still the team to beat!

Not so sure they can sweep the finals and win the GF by 20, I think Hawks, Buccs and Reds all have great chances of winning the lot, should be fun

Things learnt tonight in the Ham...

* Mandurah women should not be underestimated. Everybody contributed for them tonight and the trio of Milo, Brown & Palusna is lethal

* Not sure why he was out, back the lack of on court leadership when Rocko started to pull away in the 4th, that Wunders usually provides was evident tonight. The Buccs will need him fit for the rest of the series / finals

* Liam Hunt - The kid is as strong as an ox (See Dan Hunt but far more hair than his old man) BUT he does get sidetracked when copping some advice from the baseline brigade... Still Dan should be proud as he will be a star for years to come with the Buccs

Huge opportunity for the Flames next week in the Midwest but Active West will be at capacity next sat night... Our bench and support staff may want to bring an umbrella!!

Lol the Hawks has 1 import for the first 10-12 games of the season but they didn't make excuses even when they were 6 and 8. They just worked on their issues and managed to reel off 13 straight wins. Lightning were horrible last night. If it wasn’t for a few 50/50 fouls which sent Alexander to the line they would have been blown off the court. Purser absolutely dominated him. Holmen went all Mutombo on the Lakeside guards. Ryan Smith did Ryan Smith things and Clarke guarded Michaels and any bag he was switched on harder then that have been guarded all years. They were flat out slapped by a better coached, better focused Hawks team.

WSBL Quarter Final Game 1 Review

Lakeside 81 - Perry Lakes 75

The Hawks were down just 3 going into the final period against the number 1 in the league and played perhaps their best basketball of the season led by 24 points from Kate Anthony (17 in first half). All metrics pointed to a PL a win as they dominated the glass 63 - 35 with Burton dominating with 19 rebounds. But as we have seen this year Lightning just need a 5 minute run to open the game and got into rhythm after half time behind imports Fipps (23p) Swags (20p 8r 8a) and Grant (17p).

Perth 92 - Stirling 67

An expected result but a big margin none the less, Redbacks were sizzling all night going 52% from both inside and out. Leady by Pirini and Stiendl (Standish) with 22p a piece. The concern for Clarkee and the Senators is that their imports combined for 10 points going 4 or 19 from the field. Amber land the lone light and only player to reach double figures with 25.

Mandurah 75 - Rockingham 48

The biggest surprise in this round, not only the margin but that Rocko could only score 48 points on their home court and must now steal home court down in Mandurah. For the Magic they were lead by the best centre in the league (I said it) Regina Palusna with 22 points and Emma Klasztorny bring down 17 rebounds in the absence of her sister. Rocko have some issues now with only two girls scoring over 11 points and a quiet night from Import Harrison going 2-15!. Maddy Allen the lone hand for them with 11p and 17 rebound performance.

Kalamunda 72 - Willetton 65

A classic finals 4 v 5 matchup. The shining light and difference in this game was a massive 31p and 9 rebound effort from Suns wing Ciabattoni to drag her team over the line. Rintala won the battle inside against Norwood with 18 points. For the Tigers the scoring load was again evenly shared with Payne leading the way with 14 points off 7 shots (she gotta shoot!) and 24 points coming from the bench. I still predict this series will swing with home court.

Clarke made Kalamunda relevant? In what aspect? Every other team around the league scouted for chaos basketball and if they made shots they could win a few games, if they didn't then they would get blown out.

So yeah some of the guys on his squad had better points production. Its because in the three years they took more shots than they ever had before in their lives. So did the opposing teams, go figure. Put those kids in a normal team with structure and a coach who wants to win games, and they are back to plebs.

interesting take that people say they were the laughing stock of the league. they finished 2 wins outside of playoffs. If all their players suck as has been said then what does it say about the teams they were within a whisker of knocking out of the playoffs?

the team that made that last spot in the playoffs, only 2 wins ahead of suns had Curtis Washington, Josh Ritchart, Greg Hire, Kevin White, Ryan Godfrey, Beau Samuelson, Luke Travers, Jarryd Griffin, Beard brothers as well as Dexter Kernich-Drew and Sunday Dech for short stints.

3 wins ahead were Tigers who have Armour, Scott, Bowie, Diagne, Black, Noordhoek

Not to mention the teams they finished in front of apparently had more on paper with their rosters.

You can make a case for anybody, finishing anywhere.
I deal with facts over the course of a full season.

They had 2 x quality imports and Timms.
That team should have been playing finals unless
a) Bad coach
b) Bad local players
c) both above

All teams below them on ladder had sub par imports, 1 import or no locals.

It is what it is.

They have been a league joke for too long now.
A new coach can fix this.

WSBL Quarter Finals Game 2 Preview

Lakeside @ Perry Lakes

Hawks threw everything at the Lightning and came up short. Rotation players Green and McCarthy likely away with school sport nationals. Mansfield has to keep Burton off the glass. Can Lakeside shoot at Bendat is the question as they chase the big dance. Lakeside to sweep 2-0 by 16.

Perth @ Stirling

Perth wiing by a big margin last week, I can't see Jas Martin having a bad game twice. Stirling's Johnson However needs to provide a target down low and try to slow Stiendl. Perth wins the matchups across the board, Backs sweep 2-0 by 24.

Rockingham @ Mandurah

Rocko need to win on the road to stay alive and if they play to what we have seen this year they can get it done on the road. The loss of Bourne has been tough to cover so late in the season. Magic smashed them by 24 at home early in the year. Magic are very tough at home with a good crowd behind them. Palusna near unstoppable. Mandurah in the sweep 2-0 by 8.

Willetton @ Suns

Suns stole game 1 at Willetton by 7 on the back of 31p from Ciabattoni. Suns are 6-4 at home this season. Tigers did win up the hill this season by 11. Tigers need to get Ashlin Payne more shots (more than 7 at least) and some how slow down the Ciabattonni show who plays well at home. This will be close but Suns have the best two players on the floor.. Suns to sweep by 10.

MSBL Quarterfinal Preview -Game 2

Perth @ Stirling

Mikes boys certainly took to the Redbacks going down by 5 in Belmont. They certainly wont hold any fears in taking game 2 at home. Redbacks lead by the big 6 all scored in double figures with Lee Roberts scoring 30. Stirling will need Davis to again have 25 or Ellis to hit 20 plus to have a chance to tie up the series. Stirling also 6 deep in their scoring rotation. Stirling scorching at 55% from deep. Redbacks have so much talent but Mike will have a plan to get this one.. Senators by 5 in game 2 Redbacks to close out game 3 at home.

Rockingham @ Gero

The toughest road game in the state is a near impossible feat for the Rocko boys to take game 2 after a remarkable win at home in game 1. Gero will feel some pressure to not be the number 1 seed to be knocked out in front of a wild crowd. Justin Beard a break out year with 29 points in his last game. Last time they played in Gero, buccs got the win by 15. Will Wunderburg suit up is the biggest question to take on Hire and Washington. Buccs to square it up 1-1 and then win game 3 also at home.

Hawks @ lightning

Hawks are the form team of comp and just keep winning, winning creates swagger and these boys have a bunch of it. Smashing lakeside by 33 in game 1. The lightning are a far better team at home with those friendly 3pt rings they will need to splash 15 or more in this one. Dan Alexander is the da real MVP. You don't mess with form Hawks with the W to close out the series 2-0.

Wanneroo @ Willetton

Geez tigers got smashed in round 1 to a tune of 36 points and only dropping 66 in the process. That's a hard swing to come back from. Tigers need a 3rd scorer outside of Bowie and Scott to trouble the Wolves. Etto's defense this end of the year is always decent. Beware the wolf. Wanneroo 2-0 by 18 points.

The playoffs are crazy. 1st and 3rd seeds out. 4th and 5th going to a decider. The loss of one rotation player in any of theses series can change the outcome dramatically. An injured Wunderberg cost Gero more than they could have imagined and Ryan Smiths injury really hurt the Hawks. The league is so close and competitive despite what the win/loss record of the regular season has shown. What a great playoffs so far.

The Lightning lived and died by the 3 this arvo. Cummings hit 6 of the Hawks' 7 made 3s, that compared to Lakeside who went 14-of-35. Michaels could not back up his Game 2 performance. Alexander was limited a tad due to foul trouble. Good battle between Holmen and Alexander. Coach Daniels was very odd rotations with his wing and forward players - they rarely get more than 4 minutes together before being pulled. How's old Prue playing back-to-back 40-minute games this weekend? Still a monster at his age following two years away from the league. I hope he's back next year - he's an asset to Lakeside and the league. He gives his team so many second chance points, hence why they shoot so much. He also had 13 points tonight to go with his standard 15+ rebounds.

Only reason Stirling won is because the refs didn't even let Lee Roberts play. If Roberts played more than half a game he would have killed them like he did the first game. 13 and 6 in 18 minutes of basketball is on track for another 30 point game. So to the person above he did have a player he could count on, the refs just didn’t let him play. Horrible refereeing. But congrats Stirling, you won with 3 extra players on your side. Foul Roberts and redhage out and you’ll get the sure win!

No sympathy for the buccs as they almost have a new team every year. Even though it must be tough to recruit and keep talent in a rural town.

But you have to feel at least a bit for Wunderberg. 400+ games and probably his best chance at a grand final win with the redbacks bowing out early and he can't even suit up for the finals due to injury.

Open the books, be transparent, and win some reputation back in this State.

Some good people there, probably caught up in it - the time is now to put your hand up and take ownership.

Anyone who thinks Hussey was an upgrade from Nelson is living in fairytale land. If they didn't bring in Nelson last year they wouldn't of got past the slammers in that series, where Nelson bailed them out over and over again (and was happy to come off the bench to help the team). That's what Redbacks didnt have this year. Too many egos. Operation back to back, get off it. Salary cap that would have rivalled an NBL team like Ilawarra's and a first round exist. Lako needs to answer some big questions. All these juniors should jump ship, he's gonna bring in another 6/7 next year to play over them. Wolves Hawks should be a good grandy.

Saw the Redbacks- Senators game 3. To say the Redbacks lost because of the refs is a cop out.

On the last 3 sets of 2 free throws Stirling had in the game, they came up with the offensive rebound on the second miss every time.

Stirling grab 26 offensive rebounds with a smaller lineup. On 2 occasions within the last 3-4 minutes they had possessions where they had 5 or 6 shots due to the offensive rebounding.. they literally kept shooting til they finally made one.

The Redbacks went from a 58-46 lead (if memory serves me correctly) to lose 69-71 which makes for a 25-11 scoring run to end the game.

Redbacks has the ball with 17 secs remaining and trailing by 2. Out of a timeout they then proceed to waste the first 10 seconds aimlessly dribbling the ball out top before getting a rushed 3pt attempt from Wagner away just before the buzzer. Why didn't they shoot sooner so if they missed they had an opportunity to foul to stop the clock and possibly get another possession on offense. Interestingly Stirling has 2 fouls to give which they did not attempt to do.

Although Stirling shoot 4/25 at 3pt attempts they still won.

The Redbacks looked horrendous on offense. They have no secondary break, no flow to their game whatsoever! Their offense consists of aimlessly dribbling the ball out top for 5-10 seconds waiting for everyone to get into their spot before running limited screening action involving 2 or 3 players while the rest stood around like chess pieces. They were so stagnant away from the ball that the defense could rotate and crowd the ball as they pleased.

For as long as Lackovic has been coaching his only answer has been to buy the best talent and throw them the ball in isolation on the block. This is an old and outdated way of coaching. If you don’t believe me watch Coach K and how he coaches superior talent when in charge of the US team, he doesn’t do what Lackovic does. They may as well have Norm Majors coaching because I can’t see anything different.

To sum up, the Redbacks were outhustled, outmuscled and out-everythinged by a hungrier, happier and more together team and it showed so obviously in the effort levels of both teams.

To blame the refs is stupidity.

What’s more, if the Redbacks are so good at developing then when Lackovic leaves they should still
at minimum be a playoff team. If they go down to the bottom spots then the proof is in the pudding that no development has happened at all. Let’s wait and see on this one.

WSBL Semi-final Preview

Well we are down to the final 4 of the WSBL with last round producing an upset with 3rd placed Rockingham Flames being bundled out in straight sets. One thing for sure is we will have a new Champion with reigning premiers Hawks ending their season.

Lakeside Lightning (1) v Kalamunda Eastern Suns (5)

The Lightning had a tough first round series against PL finally winning at Bendat by 3 pushing their winning streak to 15 games. Swags (23ppg) and Fipps (21ppg) leading the way. Suns were very impressive knocking off 4th placed Tigers in two games. Ciabattoni (20ppg) and Rintala (19ppg) dominant in that series.

This season the Lightning have won both regular season games against Suns by 19 and 22 points. The key matchup this series will be Fipps v Ciabattoni, Fipps having done a good defensive job on Farnworth last round. If Ciabattoni can score 25+ then Suns will have enough points to be in the series.
The battle in the middle will also be interesting with both teams featuring twin towers in Grant/Roscoe v Rintala/ Edwards.
Home court will be an advantage in this series. Game 1 to Lighting by 15.

Perth Redbacks (2) v Mandurah Magic (6)

Oh this series is a cracker as the Magic are finding form at the right end of the season and quality players making buckets. Randy and his girls know finals basketball and are a seasoned group of Vets chasing that elusive ring.
The Key matchups are:
Pirini (12ppg 4 apg ) v Milo (12ppg 3 apg)
Dyer ( 13ppg 5 rpg) v Brown (23ppg 7 rebs)
Steindl (20ppg 10 rpg) v Palusna (16ppg 8 rebs)

Both teams featuring vets on their benches that can contribute. Can the Redbacks contain MVP candidate Anita Brown who dropped 36 on them last time they met. Redbacks winning both regular season games by 16 and 8.

The battle in the middle I think will decide the series. Steindl v Palusna are the best bigs in the competition. This series will go 3 games and will be an epic series. Game one at Redbacks who will get the W by 8.

old school I agree. I went to Stirling vs Redbacks game 2 and they ran the same offense. Just dribble the ball and go one on one with 5 sec to go. They looked so disjointed. A team of individuals.

On a positive note it was great to see Kay, Norton & Steindl on the sidelines watching the game.

I've been to quite a few Wolves games this season and their teamwork is on another level to both the Redbacks and Senators.

Has put up some crazy numbers in the past (all you people seem to care about) but this year they weren't spectacular because of how stacked the team was. I agree with the above that any club would love to have him on their team. Elite defender, rebounder and can get hot on O still.

Both teams have to get through to the GF first, and I think Wolves have a greater chance than PL do of getting through. Wolves also have far more GF experience in their team, and are learning from past mistakes/losses and have adjusted their preparation as such. Aside from the court and the rings, which Wolves will have a chance to accommodate themselves to over the next three weeks (they are training at Bendat on Tuesday nights for remainder of season), it will be far from a "home court" advantage for PL in the GF- the crowd will easily be a 50-50 split at LEAST, and Wolves will be on the home bench

The last time the Wolves played the Hawks in a G/F Hire was a beast, got every rebound and gave no second chances. Robbins WWF'd Lee into submission and the Hawks coach is still trying to work out what a pick is if it's not that thing used to break ground.

looking at BWA annual report they get over $500k form admissions, and over $300k from nominations , so probably 90% would be from hawks affiliated people (for training hire, wabl, domestic, juniors, seniors etc) so above comment is correct but low.

Yeah right. So if Joondalup, Rocko, kalamunda etc played there, they would have over 200 teams of juniors travel to Floreat to play each Saturday.

The Perry Lakes Hawks were based in the Floreat area before BWA - their offices were once in the city. BBC replaced Perry Lakes Stadium. There is no where else Hawks could be based. The Hawks are an isolated association in the western suburbs. Other clubs wish they could have the luxury of playing at the home of basketball. Not Hawks fault.

The old Perry Lakes stadium and, I'm sure, the Bendat stadium, was and is available to other clubs if they were to choose to move there.

Would be great for the finances of basketball in WA if another club moved in - when they added another few courts. Bendat has been outgrown by demand already.

back in the 1980s, Stirling and East Perth had stints at Perry Lakes Stadium. There are simply no facilities at Bendat BC to cater for any more tenants. You have to remember, being based at Bendat has disadvantages as well. Hawks have to compete with Lynx and Wildcats and State champs and country champs. They have no access to courts during summer. There is no way another association will ever move to Bendat

From someone who knows the BWA well, the annual report doesn't consider Hawks admissions. BWA and Hawks are two completely different organisations. Hawks admissions come in, goes to Hawks, and the court hire goes to Venueswest, NOT BWA. The admissions on the BWA report at WABL Finals, State Champs, Country Champs and probably SBL Grand Final.

BWA doesn’t include a single Hawks income in their books. There is a serious misconception that BWA favours Hawks, with the exact same thinking above. As someone said, Hawks simply work in the same building. BWA work in the same building as Wildcats, yet they have ZERO to do with them.

Can we put a nail in this discussion. it's the exact same discussion as the AFL Grand Final. Bendat is the home of basketball, fitting that the GF is played there. not to mention, why would BWA move the Grand Final away from their offices. Resource wise it would be suicidal. If Peter Campbell from Facebook had his way, the Grand Finals would be played at Morley...

nope, court hire for Hawks goes through BWA. Hawks pay BWA to use courts. BWA run the day-to-day operations at bendat. BWA control the courts, whereby they pay nothing for their own use. Venues west have NOTHING to do with the place anymore

Roberts is a beast. He outworks pretty much everyone on the court and that is how he is successful. He is bigger stronger and more physical so when he gets to higher leagues that advantage diminishes.

Interesting that his averages were so much lower this year than the last season at the redbacks. Was he hurt? Bad coaching? Not enough ball to go around?

will all 3 country teams in the MSBL be looking for new coaches next season?
there was constant talk all season the catalano was no good and just took the job because know one else put there hand up or applied.
what about paul craig - multiple championship winner and knows his stuff.

you would think that ray evans has run his race as well, people are bagging lako and evans slips under the radar.
what about big dan hunt coming back to gero to perhaps coach ?it sounds like his son liam is going to base himself in Geraldton. dan logical choice.

giants is the most interesting one with scott rubbery departing the job.
their fill in coach nicholls done a good job and is still in kalg - maybe he is the logical choice.

I hope all 3 clubs can get organised early and get back up into the top 4 teams in the league once again .

Magic won by a point. I wouldn't be calling the series either way based on that game.

Does home court really mean all that much in SBL? Nobody's traveling that far and crowds are generally pretty close to 50/50 anyway. Outside of Geraldton, Goldfields and Bunbury I'm skeptical of the notion there's that much of an effect.

Rockingham is not looking great, it's more like the Hawks were ordinary after Holmen went down ( hope wasn't the ACL, he didn't looked good), was looking forward to his battle with Hire.
The Flames had problems with the zone, about 40% of their shots were from long range, but only made about 20% of them.
When they execute and play with discipline they're good, but some 3's they launched was 3-4 seconds on the shot clock with the rest of the team still at half court.
The Flames help defense at best is at U16 level, not the first time, they have problems helping on cutters or even on a basic backdoor.
Still without Holmen the second game will be a formality only, but they will need way more than tonight against the Wolves

If the MC was directed at me you're way off your mark, my son plays for the Flames so have no reason to hate them :)
Yes, i was disappointed to see Holmen hurt, unless you are the creature who was sitting in front of me laughing and cheering when it happened you would feel the same, then again i don't know you, so...
I stated that Rocko shot heaps of 3's, if i'm wrong i stand corrected, ditto about the percentage, these were facts, regardless who your team is.
Rocko has the tendency to ball watch, if you watch the game (and understand it) you would see it; not guessing way, i'm not a player or coach, so i don't have a clue.
I believe that the Flames can play a really great offensive set when they're focused, they have the players, experience, they compensate well for their lack of height, but they're a young team and they can be exposed unless they're playing the starters for a long time.
I still believe that the Flames will take the series 2-0, probably play the Wolves in the final and, regardless what some might say i reckon it will be a great game.
Mind you i'd prefer Flames vs Senators, seeing Ellis and White on opposing teams, Hire vs Ellis and, of course, the sentimental part, two lower ranked teams making it to the big dance :)
Guess now this makes me a Wolves hater too :)

Hawks not only played poorly but they are in a semi final now with two starters gone. Holmen being the most recent and in game so to make adjustments like that on the fly when he is a very huge part of the offensive and defensive strategy is hard to over come. I honestly feel so awful for Jacob as he is a great team guy and has respect from lots of guys around the league.

Hawks will have an uphill battle for sure.

Hawks are too well drilled to not give game 2 a red hot crack. They have enough left even without the missing guys to cause Rocko some serious issues. One thing that you can count on is that they won't go into the game underprepared and without a solid plan in place. Just need to stick to what’s worked this last half of the year.

What worked for the Hawks in the second half of the season is not there anymore, respect to the players, but Holmen is a massive out and not just because the player he is.
With him on court Purser was able to play 3 where he had the advantage against White, in the first 5 minutes he was unstoppable, after Holmen got injured he had to switch to Hire and he can't contain Hire.
Carlwell is good, but he was the only big the Hawks had and he was exposed on the defensive end and at the other end the Flames picked off the passes when he sealed.
The Flames have too many shooters for the Hawks to contain, the game is at Rocko, the Hawks might have a plan, but the Flames didn't shot the ball that well, i expect a better percentage on Friday.
Unless Holmen comes back (and he's fully fit) i can't see the Hawks getting close to the Flames.
As for the Flames fans being too cocky: it's the semis, so far the Flames have every reason to be confident.
Sure, the Wolves have every reason to feel in the box seat, but so did Gero.
Both Stirling and Rockingham proved that regular season results and positions mean nothing, both Hire and White have grand final experiences, the pressure will be on the Wolves :)

Didn't R@ndom pick Perry Lakes to win the GF at the start of the season. Also who cares if the song got played. They just won a series they were being widely tipped to get swept in after Holmen got injured. All week the Rocko train was hurtling along proclaiming how they were going to be Grand Finalists and how the Hawks had no chance of beating them in the series. I doubt the song was played deliberately but it was kind of funny. There was a completely new DJ doing the court side stuff from usual. Pretty sure it was the DJ who will be doing the GF. Not sure the backlash on Rocko.

They knocked off No.1 seed in Geraldton in straight games. HUGE EFFORT.
Getting 1500 people to the game on Friday, packing out Bendat on Saturday.
Well done to the club.

Yeah for sure once Holmen went down and leading 1-0 they should of progressed but they did lose in two very tight games.

A lot of praise must go to Coach Parsons (and the players for buying in to what he is selling).
Surely he is COTY once again.
Down 1-0 and a 20pt lose at home to bounce back and go on the road and force a game 3, then finish it the next tight was amazing.
No Holmen or DT.
He has done this before when Gavin went down and got it down in 2016.
Amazing effort.

The outcome of this year's GF could be similar to Wolves vs Slammers in 2015 - a boring, slogfest blowout. Hopefully the Hawks can make a game of it. They have the grit and grind. Such a shame Holmen isn't apart of it.

Wolves coaching staff aka the leader of the pack himself undoubtedly @blueandwhite. and he wonders why the only people behind the Wolves are their supporters themselves. it's a shame one person can cause so much hate towards the club. I’m sure most don’t hate the club they hate the coach.
Apparently he needs reminding that the player from the club he is continuously hating on is the player that WON him the championship a few years back (funnily the last one he won before he couldn’t win anymore aside from Saturday’s championship that’s being handed to him). if he weren’t so arrogant (for reasons no one knows of, he won ONE championship how many years ago?) then maybe Hire would still be there dominating Saturday night for him too. We all know the Mayor wouldn’t have left his town for no reason.
Wolves will win on Friday because they have been handed this on a silver platter and should be thanking Holmen for not playing, Rocko for knocking off Gero and Stirling for beating Redbacks. they are the only side full strength and if they don’t win and the usual 'choking-curse’ strikes again then everyone will be shocked. I don’t think anyone is expecting Hawks to win we are just all hoping . So Ettridge take your championship you won’t even have to work for Saturday night and get it over with already. Whoopdy-do!

Wolves (unfortunately) by 30.

Agreed but the wildcard is Ettridge has choked before to an awful Lakeside team in a GF. It could happen again.

I think Etto's record speaks for itself - 6 grand finals in 8 years. 2 championships and they are in with an opportunity of a 3rd.

Love him or hate him, from an outsiders perspective he has done a pretty good job.

I remember the same being said about the Hawks in the early 2000's - remember the concern with an SBL Chief Commisioner also being the head coach of the team that was dominating???

If the Wolves lose, Ettridge should count his lucky stars if his contract is locked in past 2018

Ettridge is the new Scott Morrison.
He is Steve Bradburing his way to 2018 title.

PS - Lackovic can be Peter Dutton.

guys, Ettridge did not coach the Wolves in 2013 and 2014. He was not the coach in 2013 when the Wolves lost to Lakeside - Craig Friday was. This is Ettridge's sixth season as coach of the Wolves ('11, '12, '15, '16, '17, '18). He has been a grand final coach in five of his six seasons.

The wolves are in the hot seat, but never count out the heart of a champion. The Hawks have 6 guys (coaches and players) who have been in championship games and won, they know what it takes and Parsons will have them ready to go for sure. The Hawks boys have been battling all year and had injuries all year. They went on a 5 game slide early on and no one gave them a chance and now look where they are. One game away from an amazing run.

Hawks and Wolves split during the regular season

Hawks got demolished by the Wolves but was in the middle of their 5 game slide.

Since then they have won 16 of their last 18 games, including a 2 point win against Wolves.

Everyone saying Wolves will wipe the floor with Hawks is crazy

Hawks are on their home court
they have momentum
parsons has beaten ettridge in a similar situation before. Cockburn without Gavin Field were given no hope of beating the Wolves back in 2016.
The hawks actually create some matchup issues for Wolves. They dont really have anyone who matches up on Purser very well at all.
Carlwell could be a BIG problem for them too.

If Ben purser can play like he did against Rocko in game 3, the Hawks will win this game

agree re match-up issue with Purser, but with no Holmen, Billups is a massive match-up issue for the Hawks

Yeah the problem is Carlwell cant guard anyone on that team.
They will have to hide him in a zone to keep him on the court.

Wolves would have to be the biggest GF favourites that I can remember.

That is no disrespect to the Hawks, what they have managed to do so far is unbelievable to be honest.

Hawks best chance is to sit in a zone with a bit of man in there every now and then to mix things up, and hope the Wolves just bomb from deep and don't make too many.
We all know with Etto and his ego it wont allow for him to make in game changes when he is being out coached.

Women's Preview

Lakeside Lightning (1) vs Mandurah Magic (6)
Friday Night 7:30pm Bendat Basketball Centre

So the form team of the season and minor champions in the Lightning get set to take on a Mandurah team who is yet to taste the ultimate success, despite making it to the big dance five times before this year. So it is fair to say the pressure to win will be felt by both clubs in this clash, but for entirely different reasons

For Lakeside - They have been the standout team all season, only suffering the one loss and have been relatively unchallenged through the Quarter and Semi Finals. Injury cloud hanging over Schagmeyer also doesn't help Coach Mansfield but they do have the most potent combination in the League in Schwag, Fipps & Grant. Lakeside averaged 89.6ppg whilst only allowing a measly 72.5ppg. For the Magic to have a chance of the upset in this one, they will really have to restrict one of the Big 3 for the Lightning and force one of Mansfield's role players to step up on the biggest night of the year

For Mandurah - What a finals series they have had. Firstly knocking off their arch rival in the Flames, then backing that up and disposing of the Redbacks in two thrilling games. Where the Lightning have to good scoring guards / forward in Schwag and Fipps, the Magic are led by one of the best floor generals in the League in Brown. Given her speed, you would imagine Byrnes will initially get the job to contain Mandurah's stud guard, but if she gets going early and with Schwag's knee issues, it is hard to see who will be able to contain Brown for Lakeside. The matchup inside between Palusna and Grant will be huge, as will Milo vs Fipps whilst the likes of the Klasztorny sisters, Halleen will have to really contribute for Coach Miegel to taste the ultimate success and win the Peel clubs their first championship banner.

Interesting Note:
* Lakeside have played at Bendat twice this year, once during the season and once during the finals - In both games they only scored 71 points, well below their season average. In their only game at Headquarters all the way back in Round 1, the Magic scored 69 points - so based off that alone, this could be a lot closer than many would expect

No prediction but I think in front of one of the biggest Women's GF Crowds in recent times, this could be one of the classic's we talk about for years to come. Best of luck to both teams - I will be there with 98five covering the play by play with Cougars Legend Fleur McIntyre so hopefully we have a great showcase to another amazing year in the Women's SBL.

OMG, thats so funny!!
That is an absolute gut busting classic, I see what you did there.
You took Milo as in the players nickname, then you word played it with the powdered drink.
That is so awesome.
You should get on the panel "Have you been paying attention" with gems like that.
I wish i could hang out with you, even ifs just for your lunch break!

Too many haters against Magic and i dont even follow the WSBL, reaching the GF is no easy feat and that is what reflects their program, regardless of the result.

Also all the keyboard warriors hating this or that, particularly against the SBL, where are you know acknowledging the great job they have done on the promo of the final series, great Semis and streaming the GF's and posting recaps of the game.

Cant wait for 2019 Season

Any team that does not score over its final 12 possessions whilst the opposition score 21 points on their corresponding possessions deserves to lose the game, grand final or not. Hats off to Laleside, they beat a more talented side with their style of play. They were by far the most efficient team on the floor.

Now I guess the Magic buy better talent (glad I'm not one of their wabl parents) to go the next step. Their window of opportunity is closing quickly though.
