SEABL run for finals

With the end of the 2018 SEABL season clearly in view, the top teams are pretty much cemented in both the men's and women’s, the women’s probably more so with Bendigo yet to have a loss and Nunawadding looking like they are well past that small glitch they has a few weeks in to the season, and Kilsyth hit n their heels
The men again Kilsyth and Nunawadding front runners but the middle section in both comps looks like it could be anyone’s race

So who is going to join them in the finals ?

Hobart have injuries and have had good leads at half time only to be run down due to starters getting no rest.
Still Nunawading and Kilsyth for me, Ballarat still firmly in the picture as well.

Are the semi finals 1 v 8 or 1 v 4 system ??

Home finals in the first week for teams that finish 1st, 2nd, 5th and 6th.

Chargers led by 25 with under four minutes to to play which allowed the bench time but starters had to finish the game as rangers came storming back.

I recall the Supercats men were on the charge for a big finals campaign last season before the worst injuries possible hit them and effectively killed off their aspirations close to the end.

While the women went on to claim All-SEABL championship status, the men had to regroup for a new season with some key changes. The women have also had to cover a huge loss with Blicsavs knee injury and new imports this season.

The men's group has had to adjust to some new players and by adjusting to some of these changes along with no injury worries and the return of senior players like Owusu does make them a team worthy of finals contention once again. Like any team, you will find it hard to compete at the top of the table if you have pieces missing at the wrong time of the year.

Nichols is a great player. Makes everyone about him look great. Moller is a beast. Recruiting coup of the season.
White just goes about his business so quietly and is so under rated.
Muo had a poor night but hit a few big ones in the 2nd half. Masunda always penetrates and helps others.
Great effort from the Chargers. Trailing by 9 at the half, after leading 13 -2 the Chargers were pushed out of their own game on their own court.
The next half was what it should have been. Run and run. Supercats tried hard and were only 2 down at 3/4 time.
From then on it was a procession of points and a 28 to 15 last quarter saw the Chargers win.
Herbie scored 18, and Medved 1 (both retiring). Gatlin 17 and Davis 20 were important. Davis 16 boards.
All in all a great game and 3500 + people were supporting the resurgence of basketball in Tasmania.

Nunawading should win and start favourites for the GF, tough experienced team, good outside and inside presence.
Hobart I believe are still the surprise packet, Stewart has done a great job getting this team to play as a team, the improvement in Nichols game from scorer only to passer, defender and scorer is a testament of his coaching. Think he would be reasonable value import to an nbl team. Moller playing the four and not his natural three has also allowed him to play the point forward with remarkable success, his handling skills for a big man are fantastic, shoots at a good clip and rebounds better than all. Hits big shots, as the commentators nearly jumped out the box when he drained that three with just on a minute to go to take the lead out to six followed up with a defensive board and two free throws and game over. The rest of the team do what's needed for the team with muo playing better D and hitting the open shots when required.

Some key areas where the Chargers got over the Supercats, of course, 'Moller Time' was important and that compounded the problem of Ma'alo Hicks not being able to back up with another big game which the Supercats really needed to get over the line in this one.

The foul count went very much one way and Moller was a huge beneficiary of that, the Supercats couldn't hit a 3 ball, Medved usually can nail a couple and get his team going but didn't even get the chance to throw one up.

The turnover count was tilted very much towards the Chargers pressure perhaps being too much for the Supercats on the night.

It is a bonus for two Tassie teams (men and women) making the SEABL final ahead of the push for an NBL team there, good luck to Tassie they could sweep it but it will be very tough in the finals against Nunawading and Bendigo.

Still very proud of the Supercats effort all season, men and women, looking towards next season!

19to to the Supercats and only 8 to the Chargers. Medved clearly must have been broke. only 10 mins and 1 shot.
How Moller wasn't MVP of the league is a joke.
However said this "the improvement in Nichols game from scorer only to passer, defender and scorer is a testament of his coaching." has no knowledge of Nichols playmaking ability. He is legitimate NBL thats for sure. Hes not too tall hoever but we know that isn't an issue and he be seriously looked at for perhaps a 3rd import spot.

The fight back on Friday was outstanding. Bad shooting and playing to Geelongs game was the issue.
Stewart fired some rockets up his team at half time and they came out and played their style of game. Everything based around defence.
The matchup will be well worth paying your money on Saturday to see the 2 Tassie teams represent.

Reply #700590 | Report this post

The reason Moller was not MVP is that he is the second best player on his team. Nichols running the team 19, 20 plus point games shooting at 47% Moller very good player at this level but 40% shooting is poor particularly from your 6'9" 4 man. A couple of big shots certainly made up for his 8 of 24 fg Friday night. plenty of other examples of these types of nights during the season. Great rebounder solid defender but not the MVP of the league.

Anthony steward in interview a few weeks back clearly stated Moller was the best player in the league by far and if he'd played for Melbourne tigers he would’ve won it easily, that he lost votes at times to Nichols and Muo. He also said if the huskies get there nbl liecence up he would be the first player signed, he won the rebound count averages more than 23 points a game and defends great as well as getting team to fend better. Two points were 45.6% and three 34.1 %. 80.8% from the stripe and three assists per game.
I think most coaches would be ecstatic with that.

Each to their own opinion. Stewart must be on something if he believes Moller should be the first signing for huskies. BTW 44% from two is poor return by any estimates particularly from a four man. Very good competitor and rebounder. High volume scorer.

He's a kid @ 23 and could be an important piece for the Huskies. The first signing doesn't mean he will be the best signing. That's the difference.
Interesting yesterday that a Chargers side minus Nichols, Mollet, Masunda and Ratcliffe lost to St Marys' by only 8 points.
2 ringins in Bragg and Chillcott added a lot to that side and the lids played very well against the men.
Lot to look forward too down the track.

If you attack the basket you get the calls, Nichols and Moller shoot the three but go at the basket relentlessly.
Re Moller, last season when at Ballarat they lost the final to Dandenong when was over seas, won both games against Dandenong while he available, he is very, very good defender which you don't get stats for, even in the nbl last season he shut down some top quality three men, can guard anyone on court except for large five men.

Have a look at the video of the last minute of the Hobart v Kilsyth final.

With a point the difference Sam Daly was blindsided, hammered and concussed by a Hobart player. The call - travel.

With Hobart over the limit, a correct call would have resulted in 2 free throws and possession to Kilsyth.
