NBL -transition to a smart+big formula ?

Brisbane happy with Matt Hodgson and KiAdelaide with Harry Froling and Daniel johnson
Cairns with Pledger and Jawai ? if so not bad for a regional if both stay healthy

Has Bogut just changed the winning formula ?

are we back needing a dominating 1 + 2/3 and 5 as opposed to just adequate 4 / 5s and V strong 1/2/3's

Brisbane with Matt Hodgson and + ?? jervis was contracted but ? swapping Daniel Kickert and Jervis for Caddee and Gliddon and Mika Vukona just when the league looks like its going to go smart big is just bad timing

NZ telling Pledger he may not be needed is not looking good either.

Perth with Angus Brandt ? bit small ? + ?
Melbourne suddenly looking small and old.

Hawks with Andrew Ogilvy ? or not ?

Every team has always had a big 5..

Bogut is only the new addition to a starting spot..

It will be interesting to see how the Refs officiate Bogut.
Do they rob him blind like they do every other giant?
At least his arse isn't as big as Jawai's so players won't be able to draw fouls just by brushing his bum.

I too am worried about Brandt. With no backup we got found out against genuine big centres like Pledger, so Bogut will Shred us.

So yeah, has Bogut changed it up? Any chance teams like the Wildcats will now chase a bigger player with their import slot?

How many quality import 5s has the NBL had lately? Boone and a few others with massive baggage (which seemed to be a Sydney speciality). Other than that, the big imports have been solid at best but not great.

I think it's harder to find quality import bigs than smalls.

Now would be a great time to be an Aussie big.

Boone is top shelf but Bogut is the next step up in size, 6ft 10-11 compared to 7ft 2-3 inches. No one will compete with him one on one if he stays healthy. Both Lisch and Randle are smart guards as well, good luck trying to stop them.

The challenge for Bogut are the centres like Johnson that can shoot the outside shoot. In the NBA the slow traditional centre we saw 20 years ago is out of favour with more mobile 3 point cable centres the vogue.

Boguts strength is hes ability to set a moving screen, if the refs officiate like they did last season, hes going to foul out by the end of the first half.

Don't underestimate Bogut.

He sets great legal (stationary) screens. Plus great passing, often leading to real assists (ie immediate scoring, not NBA 2 play phases later assists). Plus bball IQ. Plus interior help D and rim protection.

As a younger player, he also had a good shot and mid-range game. He’s been restricted in this aspect since his elbow injury (break?) but will still be the difference in the Kings winning or losing key games next season provided he’s allowed to play to his strengths (by both officials and coaching staff).

As for the way bigs are reffed in the NBL, the league now has its drawcard Aussie to move to another level. Refs will focus on calls however they’re led by the ref’s body and league. Do you honestly think the NBL will instruct refs in such a way that their drawcard gets fouled out quickly every game? In my mind, I’d like to see him average about 3-4 for the first 3 quarters, then a battle of strategies (rotations, D structures, offensive focus etc) so that games finish close with fans anticipating whether Bogut will foul out, go quiet or seal the game for the Kings. Ie I really want a league with games where it’s marquee Aussie is central to close results and attracting more fans.
